As an army POG who’s sole job is repairing and maintaining NVGs I approve of this video. Most people don’t realize that every NVG has a shelf life of only 6 months before they need a maintenance check. Whether they were used or not. And while black dots are the most common one there’s like 6 different faults that could go wrong with it. If your going to own one I highly recommend getting the basic equipment to be able to take it apart and be able to do basic cleaning and maintenance on it.
@EugeneYunak2 жыл бұрын
i didn't know this. i'm currently fending off the russian horde and just got a pair of pvs7 for my platoon. can you recommend any maintenance tutorials on these? what should I look out for?
@mikemike69082 жыл бұрын
@@EugeneYunak nice I just got back from my Europe rotation. Unfortunately those are tricky for me because Iv only been trained with the pvs14 and anvis14s. And since I’m aviation 90% of the time I just do the anvis ones (binocular tubes). I’m not even sure if they use the same tools for those. But every ground unit has at least one 94F most likely somewhere at your guys motor pool. He’s the one that fixes your guys NVGs and should be able to answer any questions you have! And since I wrote this a lot has changed in the nvg world for the army. My unit has completely upgraded there nvgs that I don’t thing the ground side has caught up with yet. The only thing I can for sure tell you is whether the nvg is on or not, if you have it outside the case and it’s daylight out you are creating deficiencies on the nvg. Any type of sunlight on the nvg is burning the intensifiers (the most important part of the nvg)and that’s where you start getting a majority of your issues from.
@EugeneYunak2 жыл бұрын
@@mikemike6908 thanks Mike :) i'm ukrainian and we don't get issued nvg except SF units, so nobody has any experience maintaining them. i just bought my own, it's our only pair. they have been smuggled out of the US as far as I can tell (it's illegal to export them). i will google to see if I can find any instructions, we already do make sure to not leave them exposed to light, unfortunately i have no idea about the previous owner but they seem to work fine so far, just a couple of blemishes. cheers mate!

@ indyjons ~ Seriously, I about did this as a 101st UH-60 Crewchief at Campbell... a long, long time ago... in a galaxy far, far away... Unfortunately for me, I had been assigned an unfamiliar bird on this particular mission-- ...one with *pylons* attached (unlike MY bird that had NO pylons... see where I'm headed with this?) I think the PIC thought it looked 'cooler' or something... 😒 Part of my job, once we hit the LZ, was to exit the aircraft and make sure all the eleven bravos made it off, with all their gear... AND to make sure none of them headed aft toward the tail rotor (you know eleven bravos, right? They'll absolutely *ruin* a good tail rotor with their head, the first chance they get!) Anyhoo, I had Gen 1 NVG's velcroed to my helmet (cause that's the way we rolled back in biblical times), got way too excited cause none of the 11B's had ruined my tail-rotor, and... Next thing I knew, the PIC was trying to get my attention over the intercom, even though I *desperately* needed that nap outside the helicopter... on the ground... in a supposedly 'hot LZ'... (He was SUCH a dick--just say'in...) FINALLY, climbed back in-- and thought my neck would be in that severe kind of heat pain for the rest of my life... Either way, true story. FWIW... *Disclaimer: no eleven bravos were harmed in the making of this film! Just a 67 Tango...* 😒

I took an old Soviet tank drivers night vision set (retails around $250 depending on which warehouse you get it from though the price can vary as high as 1000, I picked mine up at a surplus store that shipped from Czechoslovakia For $250) and normally it's meant to be plugged into a main power supply on the tank, However. They have a switch that allows you to select 24 volt / 12 volt and it will run off a simple 9 volt battery. so I've got mine set up with a toggle switch for on / off. an IR flashlight and laser light combo. it's not ideal but for less than $500 it's a pretty damn good cost effective poor man's night vision that works better than it sounds, some straight up metro Exodus type shit but believe me it works 😂

Having only used the PVS 7B's and the PVS 14's I really prefer the monotube. When it came to moving around in MOUT and in rural patrols I appreciated the ability to not ruin my natural night vision in both eyes which is pretty damn useful in an operational environment. Also I really wish they would have issued counterbalance weights for our helmets in the marines, that would have really helped with the constant head and neck aches from having the nvgs hanging out the front.

Starting out with a (relatively) lowly thin flmed Gen 3 PVS-14 setup because I'm not ready to shell out the coin for dual tubes or filmless mono, but any NODs are better than no NODs.

Great video I just subscribed. I fancy myself as a gun guy for over 35 years, but I was clueless when it comes to night vision until I started my research, still very new to it and need to learn more but more informed now. Your video and knowledge is much appreciated. In the beginning of my education, I was leaning heavy to PVS 14 monocular, I'd set my budget around $3500 to $4000, as time went on and I looked more into NOD's I changed my mind. Your saying buy once cry once is so true. I just ordered a turnkey package from US Night Vision (told them I ended up at their website because of this video). It's the day after Thanksgiving and I called US Night Vision and the owner John answered the phone, that says a lot right there and gave me piece of mind that I wouldn't be left high and dry if I needed product support if I purchased NOD's from them. I ended up buying Gen 3 dual tubes articulating green phosphorus with bump helmet set up. The white phosphorus was out of my new budget. Yes I had to spend more than the 4k, ended up spending 6k but buy once cry once.

@@VT560T yeah you can, not that hard. But if you're planning to end up having to do that anyway, you might as well start out buying a cheap used tube kit, and installing a new intensifier yourself. Last time I tried to price that out I think I came up with like $1,500 for a Gen 3 PVS-14

Remember when to get a solid red dot with 50k hours cost 600-800? Now you can get Primary Arms, Holosun, Bushnell, etc from $100-200 and it works great. I'm hoping for the same thing for NODS. I hope within the next 5 years or so we can get white phosphor bino NODS for under $2k.

I just traded my Panobridged 14's for a pair of Nivisys NVAG-6 (ANVIS-6), bridged 14's is just too front heavy on a ballistic helmet, and a bonus to running the ANVIS-6s is that specifically from Nivisys they're approved for aviation use by the FAA (nice to have that option having my rotorwing pilot rating)

Man, I loved the discussion on WP or just ole green. Before I bought my NVGs, I worked with both. The WPs I never could get used to or comfortable with. I think it has more to do with my age/generation. I didn't hate the WP, but gave me a headache. Using dual PVS14s, Mod Armory articulating bridge, and G24 mount. Great presentation, G-thumb. Glad to see you out of that doctor shmock.

Hey bro, you put out some really informative reviews about gear n training. I watch some as I am a ole paradog n retired. I run with a wilcox g24 I think, n ITT PVS14 +P both platforms helmet n weapon mounts. Then generally go with a Trijicon REAP IR thermal primary on my LWRC SPR M6. They stay retired in my war chest most days. But if we ever go hot with shtf, I can atleast guard my gkids. But I am no Rambo. One thing I'd say for veterans who might be deployed in the sh** box. Foreign soldier here, yet trained with the Big Wolves n SOFs. Keep your sh** tucked well an Always make sure you n yours did the shake down before each mission. Rarely ever mentioned an few carry. We were issued black jacks n various defensive knives. I'd mount my black jack behind either my helmet or tucked into my load out harness. Only makes sense imho, as it's a last ditch tool if you find yourself on the dirt. Its saved my own life 2x n others as well. You go through enough doors, you'll find yourself blindsided on your back. It happens guys.

Think tactics and training. Counter weight with something used in the field (useful) and duel or more purposed. Not just dead weight. I used a starlight scope (heavy with high failure rates), only a few time, while in Viet Nam. No training and no tactics but still got good results. The reason I'm here is to learn about the latest and greatest equipment, tactics, and training. Never know when you'll need it. Keep learning and save a life.
