I went to Basic Training at Ft. Leanordwood in the early 90's with a guy in my platoon who was a 30 something yr old former NCO in the Russian Army and an Afghan War veteran. Our Drill Sergeants treated him with the utmost respect except when they caught him during every inspection with vodka or beer in his locker. He didn't even bother hiding it. They just smoked him a bit, confiscated his booze, and left him alone though instead of giving him an article-15 like they normally would do. He was one of our squad leaders in the platoon and was quiet, but overall was a great leader, never complained, and was very competent. We called him "The Bear".
