Until Lakeside Shopping Centre opened in October 1990, Basildon was one of the largest shopping areas in the South East of England. Eastgate Shopping Centre felt so modern when it was completed in 1985. It even had its own SavaCentre (which was owned by Sainsburys).

Basildon has been part of my life since childhood. Used to go shopping with parents, go there everyday after school, went to job clubs and courses and now I work there. I consider myself a Basildon Lad ❤

Putting a date to this - no earlier than late 1990, no later than summer 1991. From memory, as I worked in the area at the time. Interesting to see the footage.

I remember when it was the Nether Priors lorry park ....... wwe used to walk across it before fetting to Southenhay... which in them days ran in front of downtown discount and wher the old toys r us building is 😂

Most has since been emptied. I believe the Local Council plans to demolish and re-develop the area. Not a day to soon.

What they have planned is not going to improve it, 4 huge tower blocks 2 each end of the high street blocking the Sun and light out, its not going to be a place anybody wants to visit.
