This type of video is so helpful. I think we need more of these where the problem isn't just talked about, but shown. I am a visual learner and it is refreshing to have concerns presented in this fashion. Thank you!

Love your videos! I find it a personal challenge to save those poor $5 souls on clearance at the Walmart garden center, it breaks my heart the way they treat those plants! All they usually need is a bit of water and sun and love

So true! I’m new to your channel but I subscribed as soon as I saw your first video! Keep up the great work! I live in North Texas and I have a southeast facing backyard and my petunias and mandevillas just love love love it, I even have people knocking on my door asking about them. On the other hand, nothing can stand up to the sun in my northwest facing front yard it’s so frustrating! So far only vincas make it past July, but I don’t love them. Trying to find some annuals that will survive that kind of sunshine.

I needed this video a few months ago. I’m in Tucson, Arizona - the petunias are starting to no longer be sold here. I bought a few rescue baskets. I should have cut back the first one that I bought. It got super leggy and woody. I cut it back a ton, but I think too late. It has blooms but it’s not going to bounce back because it’s too woody. The temps amped up and I’m struggling to keep some of the petunias happy. My Proven Winners vista bubblegum petunias are doing pretty well, and one petunia plant that I took your advice on and cut all the blooms as soon as I brought it home so the root system could be stronger is also doing really well (bought that in March). They are all pretty much in my south facing back yard and most are in direct sunlight. We will see how this works out. ;-). I can’t put them in my north facing front yard because the javelinas will eat them. Y’all have deer to eat your plants, we have javelina. 😂 I put those plant water spikes in them because one that was doing well dried up (I checked moisture/weight in a.m) and I’ve had to cut it back. Hoping it extends the water hottest part of the day-only issue is the water gets hot in the bottles, so not sure how it will work out. My snapdragons withered away as soon as it got around 90. Lasted from October to Beginning of May though. ;-) Anyways, I love your videos. Thanks for sharing.

I'm so loving the information you giving, I went and bought a couple of baskets of petunias not knowing what I was buying, I ve been waiting on you to water the baskets, I thought I was making them bald head, I didn't know if I could place water on the leaves,. Now I trimmed them, and I'm waiting on them to grow. I guess I going to put water on them with a cup instead of the big watering can. I really want them to get big and petty. Thank you so much. From a beginner plant lover ❤

I just want to say thank you! Watching you hack away at petunias in a different video inspired me to do some light trimming and proper deadheading of petunias I planted in March (today's 5/22/24). They have come back so beautiful that now I fully trust your advice to cut them way back around July 4th for continued growth through the Summer... Literally can't wait! It is sad to watch/do but within 7 days I saw promise and 10 days an onslaught of beautiful healthy vibrant blooms. You're awesome!!

I keep the blooms and they dry and shake them over a white cloth and you have the seeds or when dead heading the dried flowers put into the pot again or into a pot with soil. I keep my plants in the same pot and bring it out of the weather for the winter and they grow again

@UpNorthGardenMI
@UpNorthGardenMI 19 күн бұрын
If the water is running out the bottom, so is your fertilizer. Also, if your container is dry, water will drain out right away and you’ll need to gradually add water to rehydrate the container.

How long does it take to rebloom and will it need another trim to keep looking nice all summer? I have an event end of July and want my wave petunias at their best!
@UpNorthGardenMI
@UpNorthGardenMI Ай бұрын
Mine usually rebloom in 5-14 days depending on how sunny it is (it’s usually within a week). I generally only do one trim back a season unless they look like they need it. Giving your Waves four weeks to recover would be more than enough time - but a good way to play it safe. Less aggressive trimming can be a safe route as well. In the week before your event you can add a smaller dose of fertilizer each watering as well (just monitor your moisture so you don’t end up loving your petunias too much and overwater them).

I’ve used Neem Oil and BioAdvanced 3-in-1 (not at the same time). Be sure to follow the instructions and reapply as directed. I didn’t have good luck with SaferSoap on aphids, but others swear by it.

Thank you for your videos. I hope you can help. I have (2) 16" (10"h) baskets nailed to 7 ft posts. I bought 6 supertunia bubblegums and 6 superbena hot pink. Are 3 of each too many plants for these baskets? Would white mini vistas be a better choice over the superbenas or wouldn't it matter? I have a green spike for them too but didn't buy the potato vine :) I want a full basket and fertilize almost every week. Im in WI.
@UpNorthGardenMI
@UpNorthGardenMI 29 күн бұрын
I’d go with all six plants (and the spike). If watering becomes a burden, you’ll know next year you could drop one or two plants. As for the Superbena vs Mini Vista, it’s a matter of texture. I think the vigor of the Superbena is nice with Bubblegum.

I have a question. A yellow petunia i have still has very green leaves, but it seems like it does not have as many blooms as it did. It's been moved into another bigger pot and i have been dead heading it. Would fertilizer be what it needs? I have a proven winners one. You are correct when you said a couple weeks after you get the plants, they start to look different. Lol i always am thinking the plants want to go back home and dont like me 😂😂
@UpNorthGardenMI

The Proven Winners water soluble fertilizer weekly should do the trick (it also has iron in it to counter pH issues). Just make sure the top inch or two of soil has time to dry down a bit between watering to avoid overwatering. The leaves on Supertunia Saffron Finch and Bees Knees can be a little temperamental for a few weeks if they’re damp or cold (they snap out of it).

Our well water has a high iron content. Can too much iron do harm?
@UpNorthGardenMI
@UpNorthGardenMI Ай бұрын
Too much of anything can be an issue. Not sure how that plays out for iron. If your plants are struggling, talk to your local garden center or Extension Office (they may recommend a soil or water test).
