im an olympiacos fan, so it goes without mention that spanoulis is my guy, but guys like bodiroga had less games in the league(different format back then). so its unfair to compare points or w/e. mike james shouldnt be on the discussion, he is like a teodosic... amazing players, totally inconsistent and if they have a bad game they take their teams down with them... i remember teodosic when we faced him in 2012 finals against csska. the guy spent the first half firing on all cylinders... then he choked and had me yelling at the screen "thats who you are" every time he was missing a shot(he was for years in olympiacos and i love him, but he was inconsistent with us as well! xD)... on the other hand guys like diamantidis were almost never wrong... he wouldnt have a 30pts game, but if he missed 3 shots he knew it wasnt his day and he had to pass it to not ruin his team, and he still was a great defender and a playmaker. spanoulis without saying he could be 0/30 in the first 3 quarters and a half but if you needed 5 pts in the last minute he would give you 6. then you have guys like navarro, rodrigues, fernandes who cannot be overlooked, despite having played in the nba which fucks up their euroleague legacy

GOAT: Diamantidis, Spanoulis, Bodiroga Best Player: Bodiroga, Parker, Kirilenko Best Scorer: Parker, Larkin, James Best Defender: Kirilenko, Diamantidis, Hines Best Creator: Calathes, Papaloukas, Diamantidis Best Shooter: Carroll, Navaro, Vezenkov Most Clutch: Lull, Spanoulis, Diamantidis Fun to watch: Saras, Teodosic, Rodriguez Honorable mentions: Micic, Mirotic, De Colo James can't be considered yet the GOAT. He needs to win at least one Euroleague title and imo two just to be actually in the conversation. He will get his first MVP most likely if Monaco finishes 2nd place this season. Counting stats are not that important. Longevity matters off course, but even the averages don't tell the whole truth. The general rule is that we can't compare players or teams from different eras. Basketball changes slowly each year, but there are actual changes that lead to that. Bigger court plus more space because of better shooters, assists for foul shots, a lot more games, best europeans going to the NBA, etc.

@@nthimosmauromatidis2231The first player in assists isn't Spanoulis, it is Calathes, but like I said we can't compare them just by counting stats or the averages, because the game is different. I am also taking into account that Calathes or Papaloukas aren't great shooters, making their job more difficult than the one of Spanoulis or James which are elite scorers that lead the defenses to get their attention so others could score from their assists. To be honest I thought we were talking about modern Euroleague, that's why Dominique or Kukoc wasn't included on my lists. Macijauskas didn't have plenty of seasons like James and Larkin and I made an exception for Parker, because he was that great and impactful. The same goes for Kirilenko which I was debating with myself if I should have excluded him or not.

I am a Panathinaikos fan. My top-5 players from 2000 until now: 1. Dimitris Diamantidis 2. Dejan Bodiroga 3. Vasilis Spanoulis 4. Sarunas Jasikevicius 5. Carlos Navvaro Leaving aside my love for Panathinaikos and trying to speak clearly with basketball criteria there is one reason why Diamantidis was better than Spanoulis. Diamantidis was an extraordinary defender (one of the best ever in Europe) and a very good offensive player. Just remember the winning shot at the Eurobasket semi-finals in 2005. On the other hand, Spanoulis was a great offensive player (better than Diamantidis and one of the best of all times) but not a noteworthy defender. I mean that Dimitris was a more versatile player being good at both defense and offence. And don't forget what the great Kobe Bryant once said: "I wish I had on my team one player named Diamantidis".

James is the closest to an NBA superstar/superscorer we can get in Euroleague - not because he is injured or on drugs or chased by the law, but because he is short. He is pure joy to observe. He does lack in titles and that counts, however I will add that he lacks in terms of attitude / persona too. Especially while younger, he was a bit controversial and not well respected. The difference with Spanoulis is that Bill had global recognition and love. I remember fans of the opposing teams applauding him. Moreover, he was inspirational for his team mates and youngsters that looked up on him. You could hear stories about him and his obsession with basketball that bring Christiano Ronaldo and Kobe to mind (I think he was not as extreme as they were but still). Additionally, the 2 titles that he won with Olympiakos - especially the first one - were with low budget / fame team mates. Yes, you know Sloukas, Papanikolaou, Hines, Printezis, but who knew them at the time? I doubt you could have substituted Spanoulis with any other player and won those titles. I believe he removed part of the stress from younger team mates because they all knew that when it mattered, when the ball burned, he would carry the team. This way, his team mates were able to play their game. Moreover, and I cannot stress this enough, he was a monster at pick n roll. He has invented careers that did not exist for his center team mates. I was watching his games and i was like 'how does he pass the ball to the center so effortlessly?' and then when he stopped no one else could do it this well. Finally, part of his legend was that he left an a-ma-zing, all star pao team, with the best coach, top class team mates in order to succeed on the biggest pao adversary olympiakos. Olympiakos at the time had a mediocre team that hadn't won greek championship or euroleague for ages. Well, he made it and that's a story by itself.

James is an excellent shooter and scorer in general BUT he has spend his career in second tier teams playing the hero and hogging the ball. When he plays well or when he is not properly defended they win, when he is not playing well they lose. All the others in this video played in highly competitive teams that had alternatives to "hero ball" thus time and attempts were shared better with their teamates. Spanoulis didn't even play that much in the 2012 final because he wasn't in the zone (at least early on) guess what Olympiacos closed the difference without him and when he returned to the game they won. James' teams rely so much on him and that's why he has these "crazy" stats.

The number of championships won factor is the least important one for such a discussion in euro basketball. The most important factor, the team's roster, is almost never decided by the player in question on euro teams. Also the Final 4 format favours surprises and most of the teams that became champions weren't the best one during the season. Instead we should look for how much that player influenced his team and in which way.

Those who understand basketball, choose Diamantidis. Best defender, best passer, smartest player, best creator and of course, one of the clutchest players. He was everywhere in the court and everything in the court. He wasn't the best scorer but he was good enough. He just had everything. If he was playing in shooting gaurd position he would be the best scorer as well.

Diamantidis is the goat of euroleague, no doubt about it. Span and James might be the best offensive players/ scorers. Diamantidis had balance in defence and offence , clutch player, leadership, assists, captain, 6times best euroleague defender and rarely made a bad choice, mistake unlike Spanoulis and James. Spanoulis defence was bad, James decisions were pour sometimes. Could be compare diama with dejan tbh All mentioned players played for pana . This shows the greatness of this team. Best European team by far

Euroleague GOAT without any EL titles?? Have you seen any GOAT without the major title? Come on guys, i love Mike James too but he isn't even in the top5 Euroleague goat conversation. I get it that you want views and clicks and that you are Mike's biggest fans but come one lets get serious. He is the TOP SCORER not the GOAT. Spanoulis is my number 1.

He wasn't just a scorer! He was the most clutch player in the history of the league by far, great scorer and he is still 3rd on assists. The way he was manipulating the PnR was amazing, he was a great leader and his work ethic was top. About the 2way player, brother there are no such players in Europe that can be in the GOAT conversation.
@karembarium

Brother the top5 players in the GOAT conversation are not 2way players. Realize and accept that! This isn't NBA here. Probably you are shy to say Diamantidis and you should coz although he was an EL legend, he shouldn't be in the GOAT conversation (too low in offense for a GOAT)

Not shy to say to say 3D. I clearly state it. 3d is in there. You can refer to the great coach Obradovic's opinion. Being the Goat is not about numbers only.. it is about dominance on the court.. Jordan is the GOAT for this reason. Dominance offensively and defensively. If you do make ref on the numbers then MJ23 would be far from being the GOAT. anyhow both of them are TOP 5 and we should be proud. It's just the way you look at things.. it is opinion based.. maybe you are a fan of Oly.. personally I am not a fan of any of Pao or Oly.. I would go with the preference of coach Obadovic, who coached them both

I don't understand why you took only period from 2001 in consideration ? You should have taken period from the season 1991-92 because that season the competition got new format and changed the name from European Champions Cup to European League or Euro League , and from that season modern era starts not from 2001. In 2001 just ULEB took it over from FIBA and that's it. Because of that, first you limited Bodiroga only to 5 seasons of consideration and the real debate who is the GOAT should be Bodiroga or Spanoulis, not Spanoulis or Mike James ; and second you eliminated from the consideration and conversation several great players who played in the 90s, like Sasha Danilovic, Sasha Djordjevic, David Rivers, Carlton Myers... so this was really not done good.

EuroLeague officially counts all the titles and finals from 1958 and all of the final fours from 1988. BasketNews has just come up with their own personal opinion to count it from 2001. The EuroLeague itself counts from 1958, even though they are implying they don't, that's not correct. Numerous times over the years the current EuroLeague has published articles stating that they count everything since 1958.

Diamantidis end of discussion. The most complete guard of all time. Spanoulis decided to go to Olympiakos cause he was always number 2 behind him. Diamantidis was the favorite kid of Zeliko and all Panathinaikos fans the same time Sarunas and Spanoulis was in the same team..This speaks for itself. Only person that could give him a run for his money would be Manu Ginobili if he stayed in Euroleague for many years. Manu could have been an even better player for Euroleague scene.

From someone who's watched the NBA since the mid 70's, the Greatest NBA player is Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. This man doesn't get the respect he deserves because he was a center. In 20 seasons his 15,837 field goals made is still best in league history with over 1,100 more made baskets than LeBron James who's over half way into his 21st season. LeBron would have to play 23 seasons to break that record.

As far as Mike James being the EuroLeague GOAT if he wins 1 EuroLeague championship...no. No disrespect to Mike James at all, as he is a really, really good EuroLeague player. But there is no way he is even remotely close to being in the EuroLeague GOAT discussion with winning just 1 EuroLeague championship, if he is able to do so at some point. That does not even put him in the GOAT conversation at all. 1 EuroLeague title is nowhere near enough to be compared to modern EuroLeague players like: Vassilis Spanoulis Dejan Bodiroga Dimitris Diamantidis Sarunas Jasikevicius or also guys like: Juan Carlos Navarro Antoine Rigaudeau Theo Papaloukas Vasilje Micic Nando De Colo Ramunas Siskauskas If he won 1 EuroLeague title, James is still far away from Spanoulis for the GOAT discussions (not even close), or also Bodiroga, or also Diamantidis and Jasikevicius. In all honesty, Mike James isn't even as high on the EuroLeague GOAT ladder as players like: Sergio Llull Milos Teodosic Anthony Parker Sergio Rodriguez Then you have FIBA era EuroLeague players, and also Mike James is not as high asmany of them for GOAT discussions either, like: Janis Krumins Emiliano Rodriguez Clifford Luyk Sergey Belov Wayne Brabender Bob Morse Manolo Raga Dino Meneghin Walter Szczerbiak Miki Berkovich Antonello Riva Epi Drazen Petrovic Bob McAdoo Nikos Galis Dino Radja Toni Kukoc Sasha Danilovic Sasha Djordjevic Panagiotis Giannakis Arvydas Sabonis This doesn't even mention players like: Radivoj Korac Drazen Dalipagic Kresmir Cosic Mirza Delibasic Dragan Kicanovic Ivo Daneu Zarko Paspalj Carlton Myers Ibrahim Kutluay Petar Naumoski Nikos Oikonomou Zeljko Rebraca etc. If we limit it to JUST American players, even then Mike James is not the GOAT American EuroLeague player. As players like: Anthony Parker Shane Larkin would be higher than him on the EuroLeague GOAT ladder for modern players, with guys like: Alphonso Ford Mike Batiste Trajan Langdon Kyle Hines JR Holden also in such a discussion. If we include the FIBA era Americans, then Mike James is also behind a whole bunch of other Americans on the GOAT ladder, like: Clifford Luyk Wayne Brabender Bob Morse Walt Szczerbiak Tal Brody Lou Silver Jim Boatwright Audie Norris Nikos Galis Joe Arlauckas David Rivers Tyus Edney In all honesty, while Mike James has had a really good EuroLeague career, he's not even remotely close to being in the EuroLeague GOAT discussion right now. Maybe IF he wins the EuroLeague MVP this season, AND the EuroLeague championship AND EuroLeague Final Four MVP this season, THEN maybe we can talk about maybe putting him in EuroLeague Top 30 all-time discussions. It's actually insulting and outrageous to so many previous EuroLeague great players that all of these Mike James EuroLeague GOAT videos are popping up everywhere. If we put it in terms of an NBA equivalency, putting Mike James in the EuroLeague GOAT conversation is basically the equivalent of saying Allen Iverson is in the NBA GOAT conversation, and even then, that's probably being too generous to Mike James at least right now, as Iverson did win a league MVP and make a finals, neither of which James has done yet.

I wish Mike James played defense, then he would definitely be the GOAT. Vasilis and Dimitris for me had, and still have for the former, the most impact to Greek basketball since Gallis and Giannakis. There is a reason why Diamantidis was called the "octapus", his defense was on a whole deferent level and annihilated every opponent he was guarding except one and that speaks volumes. When you find ways to overcome the best defense (one hand 3shot with side step on the clutch) everything else is easy. When your presence on the bench alone "demands" the absolute effort from your players it means you are respected on the highest level. It is the respect from his opponents who tried numerous times to beat him that made him his legacy and make him the G.O.A.T .

To make things more clear about the goat at least between diamantidis and spanoulis is that: Spanoulis left panathinaikos because NOONE would get more money than the best of the best Dimitris Diamantidis , the player that the goat head coach Obradovic believes he's the best player he ever had and i guess he knows a few things more than us , all the rest are just (fair though) opinions My personal opinion diamantidis is the best because he was everywhere and even in offence when ball was too hot he would get it not spanoulis as long as they were in the same team and he's done way more cluch plays in Greek league's finals if it counts Mike James shouldn't be in that list for me it should be players that won one trophie at least Navaro should be mentioned even Batiste not Hines
