I strongly disagree. Euroleague has money enough since a few years. Good players choose to come to, or stay in the Euroleague instead of rushing to the NBA. The Euroleague is actually in danger of getting too commercial. Euroleague should never interfere with FIBA competitions and teams should qualify for the Euroleague via their national leagues and not thanks to having money or being a team from a "big city". The major difference before was the difference in court size. Since that has become less, European basketball has come way closer to the NBA in quality.

Comparing the Euro League (which is an international competition) to the NBA is a bit of a problem because they work in different ways. Only the best teams from the respective European countries play in the Euro League, so the Euro League is not the main competition of any team, it's the bonus competition, often for doing well in their national competition (which could be compared to the NBA). This is also the reason why you probably don't have one shop to get a jersey of club X in the Euro League. You can get the jersey of the club in their respective online shops or online shops of the manufacturers, which is a normal thing as clubs are much more autonomous than in the NBA - and, again, the Euro League is not the main competition of a club, even if it's the most prestigious one. It's like if the US, Canada, Mexico, and maybe all the caribbean countries would create an international league where the best teams of all those countries would compete in in parallel to their national leagues. So the Euro League can and will never have the amount of games that a national league has because it would be impossible from a scheduling standpoint as well as the amount of games players would have to play. Regarding the NBA's issues...I don't think fewer games is the solution for the NBA. As other content creators on YT have pointed out previously, the issue is that players these days play so many games at a young age that they are overplayed a lot earlier in their careers and injuries start piling up, so they have to be load managed like crazy. This is where things have to change. Players played 82 game seasons in the NBA for a long time and back then there wasn't this load management craze like we have today. Regarding the actual play, the NBA really needs to enforce traveling and flopping rules, watching this stuff is such a turn-off, it's crazy, especially when you watched the NBA like it was played in the 80s and 90s.
@DammitBobby
@DammitBobby 10 ай бұрын
In response to your load management section: while I dont necessarily disagree with your sentiment that high school kids are becoming way over worked, I don't like the argument that "players back in the day played 82 and they got hurt less". It's a bad argument because the level of the average athlete in the nba, is significantly higher than the average athlete in the 1980s. Dudes were smoking cigarettes in the locker rooms after the games in the 1980s. Nowadays in the nba, EVERY player is taking their body and athleticism seriously, the increased spacing has lead to more drives to the rim and more explosive plays on average. The average athlete in today's nba can run faster, accelerate quicker, jump higher, and stop on a dime better. All of these factors add into the notable increase in injuries over the last decade. A lot of the problems simply aren't fixable, but are rather taking the increase in athleticism to it's logical conclusion.

Euro League is not really a comparison to NBA and 34 games is plenty enough as lets say Kauno Zalgiris - Lithuanian BC plays in LKL ( Lithuanian National League ), Euro League and King Mindaugas Cup ... i believe same are for other Eu teams - 2-3 or 4 different championships/cups over a year so for teams is a lot of games .. yes, some cups/leagues and matches are walk in a park and National Cup with Euro League is main priorities but still - European teams has a lot of matches over a year if you add them.

If too many teams would get into playoffs then the regular season will mean less as you may play bad and still get to playoffs. On the other hand 10 out of 20 getting into it seems fine for me. You still need to be in the better playing half. I wouldn't make a tournament out of it thought. Just 7th plays 10th and 8th plays 9th for 2 places in the playoffs quarterfinals. Also I don't think Euroleague should change things to attract fans from other continents. Home fans are the most important and they are creating the atmosphere. They are the Euroleague.

@@BasketNews_com The other guy doesn't seem to grasp that in the EU this would simply be impossible. It's simply against the law. You can not force a contract on a player which you would need to do here to make this happen. Unlike in the US contracts are with teams. You signa contract for X years for Y/week.(don't know about basketball but in soccer pay is per week so I'm going with that). If that team tells you they traded you for somebody the player just goes "no you didn't, lol." and he would could just decide to wait out his contract. Get his X years worth of Y money/week and then go as a free agent to another team. Leaving the team he left with nothing. In short, individuals hold power here. Not leagues or teams. Nothing can happen with player contracts without the player's consent. If a soccer player gets bought for 500 million by some Arabian club he can just go "not going" and his team misses on on 500 million. The team has no power to force a player to do jack shit.

- Play-in is not what I would support. Like, it's not enough that no8 has to play with no1, and then also has an away game disadvantage. But now they have to travel and fight for a few more games and days. Just give no1&2 direct semifinal tickets. - Euroleague already has big differences within club budgets and permanent win favorites. Adding 3 games to win semifinals and finals would only increase differences and create monopolies, see football CL. Final4, if lucky, can give outsiders bigger chance for surprise.

One thing you need to understand about the marketing of euroleague is that each team markets itself instead of there being a centraliced marketing by the league and this is more than unlikely to ever change. Teams like FC Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid or Olympiakos Pyräos are not only Basketball teams. They are also soccer teams and often other sports as well. They do the marketing for basketball as a part of their marketing strategy for their own franchise which is most often focussed on the soccer team and they won't allow the league to take away from that. Also keep in mind that all those teams are also playing in national leagues of their respective countries. So they are having additional matches during the season and need to do marketing for that as well which Euroleague can't really do as those matches are outside of euroleague.

Excellent video with great factual insights between the comparison of the 2 biggest leagues in the world that has been highlighted in great detail with some nice funny vids in there lol This video should be watched by every bball fan in the US that can enrich their knowledge of what the Euroleague is about that consists of different countries taking part. The one thing i think you may not have mentioned is how open-minded the NBA has become ever since Adam Silver took over and how much he has studied other leagues and in particular the European league to implement certain aspects into the NBA (most recently the play-in tournament). The Euroleague sounds pretty straight forward and stick to their guns as no dramatic changes occur with the exception of the play-in they just adapted- which much like the play-in in the NBA wasnt well received but then became very popular. The one thing i'm not a big fan of the Euroleague is what was mentioned in the video about the big budget teams almost always being in the top seeds which doesnt leave that much space for smaller teams from smaller countries to make noise and be the underdog. For the NBA - in the last 8 years there has been 4 new championship winners for their 1st time in their franchise ( Cavs, Raptors, Bucks, Nuggets) so this has been very refreshing in creating that parity regardless of how big each teams budget is which is something that can hardly change with the Euroleague. Where can we continue debating this topic (apart from KZbin comments) as its great hearing from people from around the world??

Final Four is fun but a bit unfair at the current state (34 games + Playoffs). As an Olympiacos fan I felt both sides of the story (unfair for the other team, and unfair for Olympiacos). But ok, i mean as the euroleague format was until 2016( first round, second round, playoffs, final four) with less games (that had the meaning of a knockout game) the final four seamed ok, but now it seems like either you are or bad for 34 games at the regular season, it has small importance, cause the whole story is if you are good in the weekend of the final four. The format is like the Euroleague ends at the playoffs and then is a different 3 day competition (the best in this 3 day competition wins, but not necessarily the worthiest one in the whole 37-39 game season).

I’ll comment as I go: Play in will hurt the competition. Expanding a post-season field has, in all situations I’m aware of, diminished the importance of regular season performance as a team doesn’t need to be as good to get to the end season tournament. Regular season, particularly longer ones, are the most fair way of judging a team. Shortening it increases randomness and inherently decreases competitive integrity. If they’re not good enough to qualify, too bad they had the whole season to make up that difference.
@alohatigers1199
@alohatigers1199 10 ай бұрын
Like you said, if a team fails to make the playoffs after 82 games, then why create a play-in tournament and give these teams even more chances? Too bad. So, I agree, adding the play-in tournament is pointless since they have 82 games. Also, I would argue that less games does force the league to actually take the regular season more seriously. If every team plays each other 2 times (1 on the road and 1 on home), that’s 58 games. Instead of 58, the NBA chose 82. That means certain teams play each other 3-4 times. Why? To further prove my point, players don’t even try UNTIL the 2nd half of the season. If that’s the case, then we don’t need 82 games. Also, some people don’t actually watch all 82 games. By decreasing the games, I would argue more people would tune in to watch the games. NFL has 16 games. Enough said. Do the math: 82 - 58 = 24 games. Those 24 games are unneeded. Like you said, if a team fails to playoffs, then you suck. Should’ve try harder in the regular season.
@cratwinterz200
@cratwinterz200 10 ай бұрын
@@alohatigers1199 I agree and disagree. The concept of shortening the season does make individual games more important, but as I briefly mentioned in my initial comment, it also increases randomness and harms the competitive integrity. I would argue rather we should limit the number of teams in the post-season. It achieves a similar, if not outright same, effect as teams at the top will have to be more competitive to make the end season tournament. This should also result in stars playing more games, if only to get the safety net of a lead would have should an issue come up. Without a relegation system, and the draft to reward tanking (which I don’t really think can be solved in the current format), you’re always going to have teams that don’t care to compete. But the league would be more competitive if instead of 10 teams per conference only the top 4 made it to the post season (or if you really want the play in system top 5). The issue with shortening the regular season is that anomalies become far too impactful. Random one off games like missing 27 straight 3s is a bigger deal. But also it increases the impact of injuries. If Luka was out for 20g b/c of a bruised pinkie on his offhand, that sucks in an 82 game season where you’re losing your star for nearly a quarter. But you still have 62 games to make up whatever deficit was caused. In a 58 game season, that same 20g injury is catastrophic. You just lost your star for over a third of the season, and you may as well just begin tanking and hope you get something from the draft rather than a likely fruitless endeavour of failing to make the post season. It’s less justified to say git gud when variables outside the control of the players are more impactful imho.

Actually my opinion has shifted a bit, after reading your comments guys ☺I agree that in the NBA this tournament only adds entertainment and extra cash for the league, but not the actual competitiveness. 82 games is enough to determine who's better, as you said. But when we're talking about the EuroLeague, there are fewer teams, hence fewer games but also smaller percentage of teams make it to the post season. In the NBA you have over 50% (16 of 30) of teams making it, while in the EuroLeague it's under 50% (8 of 18). That's why I'd argue the EuroLeague NEEDS it, while the NBA could do without it.

@@BasketNews_com Plus in the Euroleague we have a habit of "choosing our opponents" in the last games. So, a Play-In tournament would make things more unpredictable. And I am saying that as a supporter of a team that has the aspirations to reach the top 4 in the rankings this season.

Great video. You do a really nice job of highlighting the great qualities in each league. However, the only point where I might disagree is that the flipside of your point about the rules favoring offense in the NBA is that those very rules that make it harder to score, also make it EASIER to defend and therefore lead to the possibility of lazier defense (which is kind of the case in 1990s/early-2000s NBA) and less innovation on that side of the floor. To quote JJ Redick: "You know why it's so hard to play defense in the NBA? It's not 'cause we can't and it's not 'cause we don't try. It's 'cause there's f**king space and the players are so good." In this sense those very NBA rules favoring the offense have also lead to some outstanding defenders like Kawhi, Giannis, Gobert, Draymond, Jaden McDaniels, JJJ, Caruso, Anunoby, Beverly, Bridges, Claxton, Ben Simmons, and a ton of other players. The NBA rules also breed more innovation in terms of the range/types of defenses played. This is why, again, Redick is right to point out the myth that NBA players in the 1990s were just all-around "better" defenders and why I am skeptical that incorporating more EuroLeague rules is needed to make NBA defense better.

What I think a lot of Europeans don’t understand about the NBA is that there is actually too much talent. The league is addressing this issue by expanding. On a given team there could be 2 or 3 of the top 50 basketball players in the world. And it has been proven that the current NBA is not playing less defense or worse defense it’s that the offense talent overmatches it.

One main thing which makes me like the NBA over other types of sports (or FIBA) is the focus on the players, instead of the teams. I still have a preference for 1 or 2 teams, but it allows me to watch other games too, just because there are players in it that I enjoy watching or that have been former players on a team I follow, opening up more of the league to being enjoyable to watch. At some point, you know so many of the players that you become invested in almost the entire league and you certainly watch more games because of it. I think it is a good model, especially for a sport that only uses 5 players on a court at the same time. With football (soccer for american people) there are 11 players on a court, so there is far less individual influence on the game by a single player than in a basketball game.

I largely agree; however, I believe the Euroleague can become more 'welcoming' to European football fans by implementing two key initiatives: A) Clearer Qualification Format: I still struggle to understand why qualifying for the Euroleague is a complicated process, especially when compared to the UCL (UEFA Champions League) qualification in football. The perfect Euroleague should have clear sporting criteria for A licenses, EL qualification, and EC qualification. B) Bringing Football Clubs to European Basketball: Many football clubs lack corresponding basketball teams. Teams like Roma, Marseille, or Dortmund don't have equivalent basketball counterparts. Now, imagine if they did - it could attract football fans to basketball and, in turn, to European basketball as well.

It will work better when there are 32 teams, 16 in the playoffs, 16 out. 16v16 from each conference, 15v15... 2v2, and 1v1. Teams are not incentivized to tank bc you only have a 50% chance to move up in the order.

On top of the play-in tournament for those bum teams that didn’t make playoffs AFTER playing 82 games. I can see why the regular season is so meaningless. Players don’t try hard until the 2nd half of the regular season. NFL has 16 games, that means every game counts. I would argue more people will tune in to watch 58 games than 82 games.

I don´t think trades would help Euroleague, especially when you consider the teams are based in different countries. They are not all in the eurozone, or even part of the EU/Schengen space. You would end up trading a player to a country they don´t know, where they speak a language they don´t understand, that uses a different currency, where they might need a permit to live in (and for some reason might be declined). If you are going to have this type of impact on someones life, at least they need to have a veto. In the NBA most that can happen is you go to Canada. In Euroleague you´d end up in a country with an alphabet you can´t even read or make anything out of it, like Israel or Greece (or Russia, now removed from Euroleague).

I agree with everything except that EuroLeague teams should allow players to be more vocal on social media, especially regarding topics not directly related to basketball. Millions of people follow those athletes and because of that, their views and opinions can impact public opinion drastically. However, those views are not inherently more valuable that those of an average person, so I think that they should stick to what they're doing best: playing basketball. Everything celebrities say on social media can be entertaining, that's true, but it can also be dangerous since we don't know what kind of impact it will have on regular people (Let's be honest, average person is not really the brightest).

For the NBA, more teams such as an additional at least two, Euroleague schedule with teams playing each other twice with a total of about 60 games, 12 teams in each division in the playoffs with the first four having a bye round and the last eight an additional which would substitute for some of the total number of games, and a playout tournament where the best of the worst teams gets the highest number in the draft. That way all teams would be competitive all season long, there would be no tanking, an almost equal amount of games but all or most supercompetitive as every game would matter ( finishing top four and having bye round and home court advantage, having home court in the additional round or the playout tournament ). For Euroleague extending the league, more teams and more countries to around 30-32, to increase the market. We need big markets such as the UK, Poland, Eastern Europe ( there has to be a team in Finland, Czech Republic or Hungary, and there is no excuse for no teams in Croatia or Slovenia), and possibly extend it to near abroad such Egypt, Arab countries. There is also historic and great clubs that currently have no chance participating in the league such as Aris, Paok, Galatasaray, Cibona, Varese, that need to at least have a chance.Increase the number of games, reduce the number of domestic commitments ( Euroleague teams could participate from the playoffs domestically), increase the number of playoff teams to 16 creating an additional round, stop the F4 nonsense and create an all star weekend as it is like that anyways with celebrities appearing and reporters asking the same boring questions for more than three days, when all the actual fans care is to watch their team compete, as much as possible, to have the chance to see them at home, and to give the best team the best chance to win everything and not be dependent on of fluke game...
