Hi Emma, the gallery that you were in was my late late grandfather’s estate. He was the first trade minister and a Pasha. His name was Abdullatif AlMandil originally from Saudi Arabia. Was so happy seeing it from inside, as I only saw pictures from outside and heart stories about how glorious the house was back then by the river. Thank you!

اتمنى من الحكومة العراقية إذا كانت حريصة على سلامة المجتمع العراقي ان تقوم بتعليم الاطفال بشكل صحيح وان تعلمهم و كما شاهدناهم ان لا يتلفظوا بكلمة اجنبية قد لا يعرفون معناها. من المخزي سماع كلمات غير لائقة وانا واثق ان هذا الولد اراد ان يقول شيء جيد وكما يقول المثل " اجا يكحلها عماها!" وهو بصراحة تعدى هذا المثل بشوية. إذا كانت الحكومة العراقية مهتمة ارجو ان يعيدوا التعليم العراق وتحديث المدارس واصلاح الجانب التعليمي الذي أصبح مسخر من اجل خدمة الدين السياسي. لا توجد دولة بدون تعليم جيد.

Wandering Emma, great video. Basra dates back to the 7th century, almost the beginning of Islam, and the end of the Sassanid period of Imperial Iran. The confluence of three important empires: Roman, Sassanid who were in free fall, and the rise of Islam. I wonder how the common people would have behaved in Saddam Hussain's time?

عزيزتي ايما كل مرة افتقد الترجمة هذه الانهار الصغيرة التي رأيتها في البصرة وعليها جسور صغيرة هي الان مهملة بسبب الاحتلال ولصوصه فقد كانت تجري بها المياه العذبة وممتلئة الى اعلاها وتجري لسقي بساتين النخيل ومزارع الفواكه والخضروات وكانت تسمى بفينيسيا العرب او فينيسيا الشرق الاوسط او فينيسيا الخليج العربي .

If I have the time I will Inshallaah visit Basra, I am descendant of Nasr Bin Ali Al-Jahdhami, the great Muhaddith (Narrator of Sayings and Deeds of the holy Prophet Muhammad s.a.w.) The Muhaddith taught some hadith to Imam Bukhari, Imam Muslim, Imam Nasai, Imam Abi Dawud, Imam Tirmidhi, Imam Ibn Majah, Imam Ahmad, Imam Razi and Imam Darimi. I want to visit the grave of my great grandfather and hear the great history that surrounds him. Thank you for showing us Basra

How was the overall experience as a solo female traveller?

It was actually good ... no different really than anywhere else , but I travelled round Pakistan for 3 months Solo... I made contacts in advance as usual through FB groups and Couchsurfing, I didn’t hire a guide , I had the locals show me around, I travelled between cities alone and had no issues ... other than a million selfie requests 🤣 but I got used to that ! And I could say no.... but overall a really good experience! ❤️
