"Brackish water" is where fresh & salt water meet. What he should've said, was: "tannic stained water". I've been living in central Florida & fishing for largemouth since 1969. Most of our lakes have stained water due to all the various aquatic plants & trees, and bottom composition caused by the natural annual decay of plant matter. But stained water can actually be quite clear, almost "gin clear"......it just happens to have a tea-like coloration. Drought and/or low water conditions coupled with extended periods of high winds are the biggest drawbacks to our shallow lakes down here, but usually, you can still find fairly clean water if enough eel grass, hydrilla, or other weedlines are abundant in a given area, because the grass actually filters the water. Hurricanes can wreak absolute havoc on our lakes, because they literally rip all the grass & weeds out. The fish are still there, but without the precious grass & weedlines to attract & concentrate bass and their prey, coupled with dirty water, the fish scatter, and are extremely difficult to locate and catch. This happened in late 2004 to our famous Stick Marsh/Farm 13 reservoir. For quite a few years, it was a lot like "a mudhole". Bass fishing was really slow, and many anglers started the bogus rumor stating "The Stick Marsh is DEAD"........which was totally untrue. Electro-shocking sampling by our biologists proved the bass never left, we just couldn't locate & catch them. But finally, the eel grass & hydrilla has made a dramatic comeback, and the huge numbers of bass, along with GIANT bass, are once again being caught on a regular basis. And the weedlines haven't even spread out to their maximum potential yet. The bass fishing here will only continue to get even better than it is right now. Let's just pray we don't get any more hurricanes..........and plenty of rain to cure this current drought.
