Thank you for this! Honestly I’m the only bass player in my advanced orchestra and I began as a cellist I’ve only been playing bass for a year and to be honest I sort of taught myself, since I was the only bass player I was just given books and I didn’t really have anyone teach me due to there being more of the other instruments. I’ve done pretty good now but due to being self taught I only remember finger pattern and at times forget note names or how they look like! I also don’t know my positions well due to never really being taught! So I just needed a refresher on it and this video has helped a lot!!

I have a 5 String Upright Bass w/ a Low B String that allows me to play some lower pitches w/o having to have an extension installed plus it's a bit bigger in versatility. Thomas & George Martin have improved its playability by making a couple tweaks to its setup.

Love the 5 string! Works really well to play those lower parts for Baritone & Bass Voices

Great bass fingering tutorial. I am just beginning with this instrument and my teacher is having me do an exercise with down then upstrokes as i move from G to D to A to E and then back. First with 4 on each, then 2, and so on. Can you suggests others?

Thank you for this helpful video. But why first position is followed by 2nd position and not first half position?
@MrSutherlin
@MrSutherlin Жыл бұрын
Great question! The simplest answer is to look for efficiency based on level of experience. I didn't cover those positions yet because we haven't learned those yet in the beginner/intermediate level for the grades that I teach.

Unbelievable how hard this information is to find. Actually infuriating, I'm trying to support my son's practice but no one has answered me about this, it doesn't seem to be like other instruments as in put your finger on and off you go so it's hard unless you learn this.

Hey Hi. OK I am actually quit irritated by this tutorial , but I am a self taught idiot so please help me understand your tutorial, which has been nicely put together until the confusion sets in. I am trying to teach myself music theory as a self taught Double Bassist. In your beginning of your tutorial you show(mark) the open A string as a whole note on the first space on the staff/measure , when you move to the next hand position you depict the A note/pitch on the (5th fret E string ) on the same place as you depicted(marked) the open A on the staff/measure earlier in the tutorial ? So I am trying to understand this on the staff/measure the open A string and the A on the 5th fret of the E string are marked on the same place on the staff/measure ?? This is what is driving me round the bend.... You do the same thing with B ,first you mark it as the seventh note on the E string and you show this B as being (marked/shown/depicted) on the second line on the staff/measure later in the tutorial you show the B note/pitch as the second note on the A string but show/mark it on the same place on the staff/measure as you did with the first B , on the second line so the B ( so the note/pitch B (7th note E string) and the B note/pitch the second note/pitch on the A string are shown/marked/depicted on the same place on the staff/measure ?? Please advise as you have set me back I don't know how long, everything I thought I'd learnt is wrong ?? Thought planted a feather and thought it would grow into a chicken , I know but I am trying to understand this please help. If I could afford private music lesson I would I strongly advise anybody new or learning an instrument to find a teacher and go and get lessons and learn music theory. I have just reread this message I have typed out and it confuses me so I do apologize if I am not making scene but i am trying desperately to , thank you. Cheers. Gavin.

Hopefully you found your answer sooner than now, but the reason for this is because the pitches are identical, but the place they are played on the bass is not. The note corresponding to the 5th fret of any string is identical to the open tone of the string above (a 4th). As an example if you played high enough on the E string you could play all the notes of the A string in first position.
@MrSutherlin
@MrSutherlin Жыл бұрын
Wow, so yeah, I'm so sorry for the confusion, I wish I had seen this sooner. By the time you read this message, I hope the answer is clearer. Each string, by itself, has the ability to play entire scales and melodies. The idea of having more than one string that are tuned slightly higher, in perfect 4ths for double bass, is so you can play those scales and melodies without having to travel so far with your hand. With that being said, if you kept your hand in first position, or around the first two tapes like in the video, you're really only able to play 5 half steps (or semitones) until you're forced to go to the next string to continue to the half step or one semitone. Again, this is only if you stay in first position, without shifting. (the ' represents a higher octave) E String plays = E, F, F#/Gb, G, G#/Ab A String plays = A, A#/Bb. B, C, C#/Db D String plays = D, D#/Eb, E', F', F#/Gb' G String plays = G', G#/Ab', A', A#/Bb', B' **Again, this is only if you stay in first position, without shifting.**
