This video will help you choose the correct rod for frog fishing based on length, power/action, and where you fish!
Frog fishing can be frustrating for beginner bass anglers. However, I still see people who have many years of bass fishing experience struggle with topwater frogs. There is a lot of talk around FAST reels and HEAVY braid but what about rod selection? Many new anglers just take a reel with braid on it and put it on a rod...BOOM...FROG ROD. However, there is more to it than that.

Good lord man I’m learning so much from you. Based off this video which I’ve watched 2 or 3 times now, I bought my frog rod today. A Lew’s Mach 7’4” Heavy, Fast action. Right now I'm just getting really adept at froggin and absolutely loving it. I have a medium heavy, extra fast tip 7'3" Powell Nusance rod. Supposed to be a jig, Texas rig, Carolina rig rod but it works perfectly with my KVD Poppin Perch. Abu Garcia Revo X baitcast 7.3:1 gear ratio with 65 pound braid spooled up on that. Caught my new PB yesterday with it, 5.25 pound Largemouth Bass. Whole rod and reel set up was a birthday/father's day gift from my parents and wife 😎

I just received my rods and reel yesterday. The speed demon pro 7'5'' flippin rod is a very nice rod very sensitive and light weight. The Royale legend I got is 7'3'' medium heavy and the action is about perfect for moving baits. I was sceptical of these rods because of the price but have been very impressed with the build quality. I plan on buying several more of the speed demon bass and speed demon pro rods I'm eyeing up the 7'2'' frog and 6'10'' jerkbait rod. Great information in this video very well done sir.

Yoooo! Thanks for watching man! Yes, a MH will do for open water applications if you use braid. You'll still be able to drive those hooks. If you get into thick muck and vegetation, you'll definitely want a heavy power rod. Otherwise, you'll struggle getting fish out and sometimes not drive those hooks. Hope this helps man!

@@chickenguru4 you don't NEED another setup. Make due with what you have. Just be cautious if you get in REALLY thick grass. You may have a hard time pulling the fish out. That rod will still work fine for light vegetation! Good luck brother!

Hi sir! Love my Daiwa Tatula 7-4 frog rod. I use my heavy/fast frog rod for saltwater / pier fishing, because it's so light and I'm a little guy (5-8). I wanted something light, with lots of power so I could use 60-65 lb braided line with a Shimano TLD reel. It works great, just have to clean it really well after use in SW. I love this frog rod for saltwater angling! My personal preference.

Good solid information. My workhorse frog rig is the Abu Garcia Veritas 7'3" medium heavy, fast action. It has quite a wide range, rated from 1/4 to 1 ounce, but I think asking it to handle as light as 1/4 ounce is a bit much. It handles more like a heavy action rod. The reel is the Daiwa Tatula CT, spooled with 50lb test braid. My favorite frog is the Snag Proof Phat Frog, I trim the legs very close for more distance on the cast. If you happen to view my channel, you'll see the thick pads that I pull those bass through.

It is definitely my favorite rod for my frog fishing, and my 3/8 oz and heavier lures. If you use it as your crankbait rod, be careful not to over power those treble hooks on the hookset, I think that rod performs just a bit heavier than it's rating.

I just bought the 8ft heavy flippin Fast action. I'm a 6ft4 guy I prefer the longer rods. And I will be using this rod for casting spoons and inline spinners for pike. More less it will be my heavy bass set up and will be my new set up for pike.
@randystreasureadventures
@randystreasureadventures 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the explanation! I use two set ups for my frogs. One is an old green Curado that I had hot rodded and the drag updated to 20 pounds with carbon fiber and a little machining (yes, I spent too much lol). I use that on a castaway medium heavy skeleton rod with 30# power pro and I would say it’s more the ‘go to’ since it can handle almost any scenario, especially if I tie on a mono leader. The other set up I have is an older Citica with carbon drag, on a TFO heavy 7’3” and 40# power pro. With that setup, fishing from a kayak, if I get one of those impossible snags, I just have to cut the line because the rig is so strong that I can’t get enough leverage from a kayak to force it to release! SO, the TFO is not my favorite setup… Having said all that, I prefer a medium heavy fast action rod to give me a little extra leeway on setting the hook. That heavy TFO rod causes me to miss more fish because there’s just not enough give in there to overcome me setting the hook too early.

I have never lost as many fish as when I was trying to use a MH fast action rod for frogging. I switched to a Dobyn's Fury 73MagH and it was NICE! I have since switched to a Champion XP 73XH and it is even better because it is lighter. Nothing better than an XH rod for frog fishing. Can really lay into the hook set and make the fish come to you. Use a Shimano Curado H fast for straight retrieve frogs/toads.

Great video, right now I use a 7 foot medium Abu Garcia Vendetta with a kastking Spartacus chartreuse reel. But it has way too much Flex in it so I have a favorite fishing balance. And I got the 7'4 extra heavy ,medium-fast flairs frogging stick coming and have a kastking speed demon reel and kastking 50lb braid coming for it I live in Southwest Ohio so I didn't think 65 lb braid was necessary.

As far as the thick cheese, I have a spot, I don't go to often. Lots of cover, lots of laydowns, thick cheese (heavy grass) the whole 9, but also lots of milfoil as well, so on that part of a local lake, I stay away from my main lures and stay to top water. Usually, a frog, a spook, or a popper. My favorite frog that I own, out of several that I have, is my white and gray Terminator Poppin' Frog. The bass didn't bite on it this past weekend, but I know they will eventually.

Hey Debo, what do you know about "Mag" class rods? I've been seeing them recently but I can't find any explanations as to their power difference. I've seen some people say that they're softer than a regular heavy and others say they're stiffer..... What's your view on them?
@DEBOSFishing
@DEBOSFishing 6 жыл бұрын
Brian Robinson hey man. There is no industry standard so it makes it hard. I believe it's a stiffer power. Like a half power up. So a mag heavy would be between a heavy and an extra heavy. If you look at the lure weight of the rod, that's a good indicator. I would contact the rod company so they can tell you exactly what it means for their line of rods. Thanks for watching man!

Hey Debo absolutely love your channel it's been helping get familiar again with fishing been about 14 years since I picked up a rod and reel now I got a kayak and been going out the last couple weeks but I only have 1 old baitcaster that now is showing its age and I need a new setup. My question is what other type of lures can you use on a frogging rod setup? I dont want to spend close to 200$ on something only set up for one lure type I think I'm leaning towards the speed demon reel you linked and a 7'2" heavy fast action on braid so I can still work the frog using the tip but what other lures would benefit from this setup? Also note this will be my first braid setup and my current setup is a 6'0" Shakespeare with a very old quantum baitcaster thank you again please keep up this amazing content so helpful I love it!

Was using Flairs Flippin and Froggin Rod last year and got amazing hook sets, then it broke when I accidentally snagged it on a limb in my kayak. Picked up Dobyns Fury 735C Mag Heavy, and haven’t hooked a single frog yet. Every time I set the hook it comes flying out of the water. Not sure if it’s the rod, or maybe I’ve been watching too many videos about hooksets. I’ve been waiting longer to set the hook, whereas last year I just waited two seconds and whacked em. The Flairs was a mod fast. I may go back to that

I have a question that I haven't really seen answered. I currently have a pretty light weight set up that I use for worms and all those plastics. Works fine. I tried using a baitcaster and it's just simply not for me. I'd like to get a med heavy or heavy rod but with a SPINNING reel. Can I make that work? What's the downfall of using a spinning instead of a baitcaster when it comes to frogging or jigging.

Hey man. I personally don't fish below 50# braid for frogging. Some may say it's overkill but so is insurance. Pay for it for years and never use it. I've broke 40# braid frogging and never used it again. I'd rather be sure my line is ok and not second guess what I'm throwing around. Hope this helps man!

Awesome video Debo! I have a question, I have MH 7' rod paired with a Lews speed stick that I use for my T-rigs and light jigs and I'll even use crank baits on it. I also have a medium light spinning gear setup for my finesse fishing. For my third rod and reel setup would you recommend going for a flipping rod you showed in this video or the heavy frogging rod? I didn't know if I could use that rod for top water like poppers and frogs, then switch up and use heavier jigs, T-rigs and swim baits? I'm primarily a bank fisherman and I was wanting to find a good third rod and reel. Thanks any help bro!! Love the channel!!

Hey man, thanks for watching! It really boils down to personal preference and how heavy of cover you fish. If you don't fish a lot of wood and thick grass, you can get away with a MH for Texas rigs, jigs, and frogs. I would pick up a medium power Moderate fast rod for all crankbaits and topwater. BUT...If you do fish wood and thick grass, a heavy power rod is essential! Use it for t-rigs, frogs, jigs, etc. I wouldn't throw any trebel hook baits on a heavy power rod. Hope this helps man!

Hey DEBO I am a beginner at this stuff and since I am disabled I only have 2 ponds I can fish right now, the first one has bluegill, trout, and Largemouth bass it has lot of open water, thick grass and there's a section where it splits and has a lot of downed trees. The second has smallmouth bass and perch, this pond has mostly open water with a patch of grass a lot of rocks and I guess logs on the one side and its very clear. So I have enough for only 1 good rod and reel ( I was thinking of the KK Legend and a perigee 2 rod I or not.) and let me know what you recommend for tackle line , hooks, baits etc. I need all the help you can give. Thanks really enjoy your videos learning a lot.

Would a 6’’7 medium light spinner rod spinner with 30lbs braid on it work? That would be cheaper for me but my other option is to use my 7’’0 medium heavy bait caster rod and get a cheap new reel that I can spool with some braid that would be on the more expensive side for me or I can get a new spinning rod that’s medium heavy btw I am 5 foot tall

Is it a MH? It will be ok around light cover as long as you use braid. If you get in the thick stuff, you may be underpowered. You may also have some issues on really long casts. But, you'll be able to be accurate with that short rod.

I'm not familiar with their rods but I would certainly think so. You'll be able to make long casts and have enough power on hooksets. You may suffer with accuracy around wood and such. Could also be tough to work thr frog with a longer rod, but that's totally based on the user and what length you're comfortable with. Thanks for watching man!

Not big on fishing bass. Where I originally come from, we always fished for trout. Where I come from we did not haul out of the water those little dinks like i see in so many trout fishing vids. We hauled out 25" and larger trout. So, when I moved to where I now live, several hours south from where I grew up, I was shocked to hear people not know anything about trout fishing. Bass fishing here seems to be limited as well. In fact, I was shocked to find fish here, I have never seen in my life - sheep head, pickerel, perch etc. If all I catch now is sheep head, I give them to the local Chinese who love them but, everyone else just throws back. Nevertheless, not wanting to give up, I bought a nice frog lure, and other lures and soft baits with the hopes of catching some bass. There are a ton of stripped base around here - but again, the people who grew up around here - turn their noses up at stripped base. Perch and pickerel seem to be the only fish people go after here. I am already considering moving back north, just so I can catch large trout and even bigger salmon. The rod I use for bass here is about 6' medium, fast action, with a bait casting reel. I just bought a new 8' 6" Shimano, Scimatar rod, medium heavy rod. What a beauty she is. Love it.

Nice man. Bass fishing is what I've grown up doing. But I got into pike fishing the last few years. It's a blast. A lot of people turn their nose up at it but they are viscous and the topwater blowups are insane. I'll fish for them all day. Don't listen to others, do what you like and enjoy! Thanks for watching man.

My friends, instead of going on a family vacation, all head up north to northern Ontario specifically to go pike fishing. As for me, I think I have caught only one bass in my life and, that was by accident. LOL Give me a nice big trout or a salmon and I am a happy camper. Hell, down here, you cannot even buy trout row for fishing. Truly, I moved into hillbilly country in Ontario.
