No matter how you want to slice this when concerning clave, you must know where you are starting from or you will drive everybody else "mad". It's something that you have to take the time to learn. For someone in Cuba, Puerto Rico, or NYC, learning "clave" is felt from the mother's womb, but for others, even feeling the clave from birth, eventually, when working with a professional band it's required for most of the band members to learn how to read music, yet for a percussionist, it is required that everybody knows where you are while playing the music. This includes whether you start from a 2-3 clave or a 3-2 clave. As you can see, the clave is even spelled differently one from the other. This will make a big difference with the music. Don't go by the feel, go by the proper beat that the music demands! It doesn't take long to learn. Don't get embarrassed if you are wrong, correct yourself and continue practicing.

A mi modesto juicio.
