I've got an offshore angler spinning reel I bought for my brother to use on vacation. He caught probably 100 Spanish Mackerel off a pier with it over a week and it worked nicely. It's almost like buying the base model of a car. You get the same basic technology just not the extras. Not gonna be buttery smooth reeling, drag might skip or snag here or there, but they'll darn well catch you a fish. Just don't expect this reel to stand up to heavy trolling or 200lb sharks and it'll last a long time!

These are a great value for the price paid. They are perfect for the occasional or vacation angler. The quality is good, because the store doesn't want bad reels affecting future sales. Thanks for the comment - Dennis

Great video and give me confidence that I needed to go out and buy the 6/0 version for trolling for tuna, kingfish, wahoo, etc in Florida as well as drop fishing for amberjack and grouper. Thanks so much.

Hi Dennis, I just discovered your channel a week ago and absolutely love it. I do all my own repair and maintenance myself and your videos will be great reference for doing so. I have one reel that I am a little intimidated by and that's my TLD 10. Do you think you could maybe do a video on that reel? Either way, love the videos and am very happy to have found your channel. Thank you for taking the time to make them. -Jamie

Thanks for the encouragement Jamie. I don't have a TLD, but they come into my shop frequently, so I will film the next one I get in for you. Once you do a lever drag reel, you can do them all. They have a different mechanical design, but easy enough to understand and work with. You can start by pulling the reel schematic to learn the basic operation. I think Mike's reel repair, which is based in Vancouver, Canada, has a library on Shimano schematic diagrams online. Do a search on Mike's site under schematics, ask to sort the Shimano reels alphabetically and scroll until you find it and print it If you have other reels you would like to see, let me know and I will keep an eye out as customers bring them in for maintenance or repair.. FYI - I have posted about 30 different reels here, so you may also find one that I have done already - Dennis K

Great video bud. I just purchased the offshore angler gold cup levelwind 30 reel and hopeful its decent for 30lb-60lb fish range. After seeing this video i wanna return and grab this reel.

Dennis! Thanks so much for the video! I have been trying to decide to go with a penn senator or go with a 6.0 seafire for trolling and some bottom fishing. I looked at both in hand at bass pro and they’re similar and I found your video by looking for videos about the reel to see if it was actually decent and your video answered that! So thank you! I’ll be able to save some money and still get a decent reel.

Both reels are very good. A post to note - you can easily get parts for the Penn Senator. I am not sure how to find parts for the Bass Pro. You should ask their sales team about parts and service availability prior to making your decision. These reels take a beating in the 4/0-6/0 class and it is important that they can be serviced regularly - Dennis

Seafire actually has more drag than the senator. We use both and have been easing into the seafire

Hello sir I was wondering if this would handle sharks in the 100-150 pound range and if you would recommend the 4/0 or the 6/0 for that purpose
@2ndChanceTackle6 жыл бұрын
I would definitely use the 6/0 over the 4/0 based on line capacity and bigger size reel = more line in per retrieve

Where would I get parts for the offshore angler?

Check with Bass Pro. I do not have a source for the parts - Thanks for asking - Dennis

absolutely awesome video Dennis, Was thinking about picking one of these to backup the Avet 30/2 i just bought for sharking. this thing has an impressive amount of drag pressure despite holding less line. i was wondering about the quality of the internals till i saw this, but you have quelled my fears!.

MahiMahi thank you. Glad to have helped. All indications are that this is a dependable reel Dennis

Hi Dennis.. Would you happen to know if a different reels drag washers would fit this reel? Someone told me this reel is very similar to a Penn “Senator” .. Thank you for your videos, very helpful :)

I don't know what reel exactly, but if you measure the inside and outside diameter of the dag washer, there is probably a replacement available through Smoothdrag.com - thanks for asking - Dennis

Hey Dennis, I need Help, I dissembled the reel, and I'm having trouble fitting the spring behind the dog, it's like the spring is too big to fit behind it. I think this is always the tricky part about putting reels back together. What could I be doing wrong?
@2ndChanceTackle4 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure what reel you are working on. Can you send a note to my email - 2ndchancetackle@gmail.com with a picture of the inside of the reel where you are trying to put the spring and I will try to help. Thanks for asking - Dennis

Dennis, I was also wondering something else about these reels. I just got into shark fishing two years ago and was using my pops old 12/0 senator for a while. I decided to go out and get an Avet 30/ 2 wide a few weeks ago. I was looking to grab an extra reel on a budget cause we frequently have guests with us. In your professional opinion, do you think these internals would stand a chance against lets say a 200-300lb shark, or would they be destroyed after a use or two? The drag pressure is impressive on them, but i was concerned with the bearings and drag washers holding up. Thanks for your time. Keep up the good work!
@2ndChanceTackle6 жыл бұрын
MahiMahi I don’t think this will stand up to that torment. I would rather see you with a 6/0 senator as a reliable backup

As always, Thanks for the information and opinion. So happy i found this channel. if i tried servicing half of my reels as good as you do, I'd wind up with an over glorified $3000 lawn sculpture after I brought out my welder in frustration!
