➡️ ‪@opeth‬ is truly one of the most "full spectrum" bands I've ever heard. Their material ranges from soft, melancholic ballads to the most crushing death-metal riffs ever written. When I first got into the band with 2003's "Damnation", I was hooked. I explored a few neighboring albums of theirs, but admittedly never reached far back into their earlier records when bassist Johan De Farfalla was at the helm. In this video, I listen to "To Bid You Farewell" for the first time - a beautiful ballad featuring his jazzy, fretless playing from the 1996 album "Morningrise". I focus on his usage of harmonics, his interplay with upper-level chord tones, and how his bass line really tells a story. I sold the only fretless I ever owned many years ago, and listening to this track really made me regret it!

Opeth's clean sounding stuff is right up there with Pink Floyd in setting a mood and just letting you close your eyes and go along for the ride. My exposure to them was almost identical to yours. I always say they're the band that musicians listen to.

I really missed this bass players impact on their early sound. Though My Arms, Your Hearse is one of my favorite Opeth records I believe Mikael just handled all the bass on that album and I think I read somewhere that Johan was kicked out because his bass playing was very busy. I actually loved it though.

Ironically, this is the bonus track on the re-issue; it wasn't on the original release. Mikael (pronounced "Michael") fired Johan in between Morningrise and My Arms, Your Hearse and I think he wanted to be the center of attention and felt a little upstaged or overshadowed by the bass player! The first two Opeth albums are absolutely groundbreaking! This is one of the bands that got me into death metal. If you look at the running times of the songs you quickly realize that Opeth is the Grateful Dead of metal. Johan never played in another band, that I know of, and it's a shame because he's a great player. Thanks for posting this!

You're getting some wires crossed there. This is the final track on Morningrise-the bonus track you're thinking of is the demo of Eternal Soul Torture. Still, absolutely agree with you-the loss of Johan De Farfalla is one of the bass and music world's greatest IMO. Feels like he had so much to offer that wasn't really being heard, especially in the sort of context he was playing in.

Love that type of bass playing…lyrical busy without trampling all over everything else. Line 6 or somebody had a pedal with a fret less setting on it. I thought it replicated the sound of a fretless bass. Really getting into these videos. Harmonics always add so much to a bass line.

Thank you! Watershed was one I spun a LOT when it came out. While I was mainly cycling between Blackwater Park and Damnation/Deliverance, Watershed had just dropped shortly after I discovered them. The whole way the album starts had me hooked. CCR definitely has some juicy bass melodies!

If Damnation is one of your favourite Opeth albums, you should really check out Pale Communion their 9th studio album from 2014. Notably the two closing tracks Voice of Treason and Faith in Others are a great showcase of how Mikael's clean vocals have matured over the years. Also both are in a simiar emotional vein as To Bid You Farewell.

Great pick from the Opeth catalog. "The lines in my hand" is a also a good one from the Heritage album. Can I interest you in something different? If so, take a look at the song "I ain't Mad At Cha" from Tupac's Greatest Hits album. That song has so much depth and you'd be surprised that there is no loop in the bass lines. Even though it's rap, it changes a lot throughout the duration of the song. I couldn't find who played the bass on it but man, that person knows what a good bass line sounds like.

When I first saw a couple of your shorts recommended I kind of dismissed you as a part of the more "meh" side of the reaction/analysis stuff on KZbin, but having gotten this video recommended I figured I had to give it a shot. I'm absolutely blow away by your ear-training, and, as a guitar player (although I write bass parts for a solo project), your insights about what the bass is doing are so invaluable, for deepening my knowledge of both bass' and guitar's musical responsibilities. I tend to feel I pick up on a lot of nuances in their music but as this is potentially my favorite album of theirs, I'm almost embarrassed to have not noticed how active the bass is. That whole first chunk of the song was like a mellow playground. Please keep doing these! This album is probably their best for bass work. It's not super audible on the next two after this sadly.

A cordial greeting to you my friend!!!...No one better than you, to analyze this incredible singer who is leaving all the experts, literally with their jaws on the floor (Do you remember Jim Carrey's movie "The Mask"? well, just like that)....In 2017, a 22-year-old singer from Kazakhstan, named Dimash Kudaibergen, was invited to participate in the famous Chinese program for professional singers called "The Singer".... In his first appearance, Dimash covered one of the most difficult songs in the world, a famous French composition called "S.O.S. D'un Terrien En Détresse"....Since then all this madness began on the internet, KZbin and social networks worldwide and he is already considered the best singer on the entire planet... It is almost impossible to see a human being, being able to reach vocal ranges of 8 octaves, that is, the 88 keys of a digital piano, which allows him to reach all registers, both masculine and feminine, that is, he can sing as Bass, Baritone, Tenor, Contratenor, Contralto, Mezzosoprano and Soprano.....You can see in KZbin to all kinds of experts (Vocal coaches, analysts, singing teachers, singers, youtubers, reactors, etc.), who have dedicated themselves to watching his videos and verifying for themselves that what is said about him is completely true...In addition to all this, Dimash is capable of singing in more than 12 languages...In all his concerts worldwide, tickets are sold in just seconds, via the internet, due to the immense popularity he has worldwide.... Anyway, I think you haven't met this impressive singer yet, so here is the link to the first song that Dimash performed in China in that year 2017, the song S.O.S., and if it doesn't bother you, I would like you to mention me as the person who recommended it to you....Warning: You have to be prepared for thousands of views, comments and new subscribers...The video It is more recent, so it does not have the millions of views that the first ones, but it is more complete, including an intro, subtitles in several languages and better audio and sound quality.....kzbin.info/www/bejne/mHW7ZHmeot6Bl8U
