Brian Ritchie literally set the metric for bassists. Remember: You are not a true bass player until you've learned to play Color Me Once

I was into punk when this came out and always thought of The Specials as a punk band because of what there stance politically was, 'Ghost Town' along with 'Shipbuilding' by Costello define the first years of the 80's.

It's an Alembec. They changed the speeling in the last few years to Alembic. I had #776 Long Scale. Used it on Detective album "It Takes One to Know One." I loved Entwistle but got an Alembec because of Stanley Clark. John Paul Jones let me play one of his when I first got to meet the guys in Zeppelin. I played the one JP uses on Achilles Last Stand video. Bobby Pickett.

My first band in high school covered this song back in the mid 80s, so much fun to play, even for me, the guitar player! That entire album is stellar! RIP Terry Hall!

I hate to be that guy, but I've heard you use the word "accidental" to refer to outside notes a few times. An accidental just refers to a sharp or a flat. The key of G major has one accidental, as does the key of F major. Notes from outside of the key can either be borrowings from other keys or modes (i.e. an A natural in an otherwise C minor tonality can be a borrowing from C Dorian or C melodic minor, depending on context), or just simply playing "outside". Other than that, I've been digging the videos.
@LowEndUniversity7 сағат бұрын
Glad you dig the videos, really appreciate that! So, I was taught differently. Also, when looking up the properties of ‘accidentals’, here’s what it reads: “Accidentals alter the pitch of individual scale tones in a given key signature; *the sharps or flats in the key signature itself are not considered accidentals.”* This aligns with the schooling I’ve received. Accidentals step outside of the native key signature briefly, and quickly return when a new theme or phrase is introduced. This is also why when a new bar begins, the accidental can be ignored moving forward. This overwriting rule implies the short-term nature of accidentals.

The first two Mudvayne albums are BY FAR the only two of their records I can still listen to now. LD 50 and The End... are really interesting and way less typical "heavy rock" that they end up veering into.

Thank you for this. There are some great California bands that bridged the way between two tone and third wave ska worth checking out. The Uptones from Berkeley and Fishbone and The Untouchables from Los Angeles. Bassist John Norwood Fisher from Fishbone is well worth a listen.

Bit of a spoiler...a lot of Mike's more complicated playing is done when Melvin's actually singing, and Melvin sings even more live when the bass lines need a little further attention. I always wondered how Mike sang over some of his bass playing and realized he really can't live, but they still pull it off pretty well. Regardless, they put on a killer show, or did til this year :(
