➡️ "Space Cowboy" by Jamiroquai is an endless tap of absolutely-filthy bass fills, grooves, and funky licks. I mean, this video could've been four hours long if I didn't stop myself from admiring each one as it ripped by in a sea of lush and funky goodness. If you're a bass player and decided to learn this song, note-for-note, I'm positive you'd come out a completely different player. In this video, we're REALLY putting this bass performance, by somebody named "Mr. X" (is it Stuart Zender?...) under the microscope. I discuss the binary nature of rhythmic fills versus melodic fills, the dry, vintage jazzy bass tones used, the genius chemistry between the drum and bass interplay, mixing longer and shorter notes to create lyrical bass fills, exercising dynamics, and so much more. Honestly? You just have to crack a smile, listen to the song go by, and subtly nod at the awe-inspiring bass lines. What else can ya do?

Stuart Zender created some of the most beautiful bass lines ever on the first three Jamiroquai albums. It is almost unbelievable that he recorded his first professional album when he was only 17/18 years old, and he had only been playing for three years as a self-taught player! It is simply unbelievable that he played so incredibly maturely at such a young age!

My wife and I flew to England to see Jamiroquai in Portsmouth last week. Space Cowboy was the third song in the set and Paul Turner just massacred it. It was like his own personal bass highlight reel for seven or eight minutes - just groovy and colorful fills all over the place He seems like one of the best bass players going right now.

MASTERPIECE of a track. You’re right to pick up on the hi-hats locking in with the bass rhythms, and the nuances of Stuart’s playing, but what really makes this song masterful for me is the harmony. Toby Smith was without a doubt THE most underrated keys player of the 90s. R.I.P.

I just stumbled across this video, never seen your channel before. This video gave me so much joy. This is one of my favorite songs, and as a young musician, this was a north star for me. Reaction videos aren't my thing, but i see the point now. It's a chance to show your favorite shit to someone who will love it as much as you do. What we are hearing here is a musician (Paul powell) stepping into a recording session as a fill in, on a tune he would receive no credit for, and creating a masterpiece. He was hearing infinite possibilities and was able to execute them with such precision and taste. I will also say, as a drummer, that this song is a primer for grooving and filling around an anticipated off beat (the AH 2 and 4). Like you said, transcribing this will increase your vocabulary within the idiom. This song has a special place in my heart and I've had a lot of fun watching you enjoy it. Thanks for making the video!

There best album IMO. You will be blown away by their creativity from this era, especially the bass playing and keyboards (with the didgeridoo occasionally thrown in) They were on fire in 1995 when touring this album too. Bear in mind how young they were at this time as well. The later releases with the new band members are good, but the first three albums are classics. Don’t create a playlist, each album is a playlist on its own 🙌🏽

I've been into Jamiroquai since the 90's. I was in the Air Force stationed in Germany. It was the bass, of course, that pulled me in. The rhythm section was so tight. They had more pocket than a pair of cargo pants. The pocket is primarily where I live, so that was very tasty to me.

Stuart Zender is probably my all time favorite and the reason why I have an early 90s Streamer, but there's also a special place in my heart for the Mr. X / Paul Powell version of this song for the reasons shown here. Mark, the first three Jamiroquai albums (Emergency on Planet Earth, Return of the Space Cowboy, and Traveling Without Moving) are a treasure chest of incredible, out-of-the-box bass playing. Zender's unique sense of rhythm and phrasing (not to mention THICC tone) have had me hooked long before I ever picked up a bass.

You really need to do a re-reaction to the version with Stuart Zender playing the bass, that's the only version I listened to. Stuart does these little funky licks and variations and his timing is what really MAKES this song groove like a mofo. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hYHOm6GIfsmEjrM&ab_channel=JamiroquaiVEVO

It’s Stuart Zender- he was genius level on those earlier tunes.

Here you go, Stu Zender on the bass for the ‘Stoned Again’ version which wasn’t obviously used on the album . Great album artwork as well kzbin.info/www/bejne/jX-ThppobMh8jqs 🔥🔥

Soon! But, any suggestions? I’m thinking “The Lemon Song” maybe! I’m not super familiar with it so it’d be fun to revisit!

@@LowEndUniversity The Lemon Song would be awesome but so is Immigrant Song, Ramble On and perhaps my favorite bass line of all: Achilles Last Stand. Listen to all 4 and decide. You're in for a treat!

You really want the radio version. The bass line is way better. That is indeed Zender.

I think the story was that Stuart had to leave town for a family matter so MrX filled in for the recording. But the single was Suart's work, which I always felt was much better. No disrecepct to MrX
