Kudos to whoever picked this track, it's a jam. This channel is the best to find artists I'm not familiar with.

Saw Haken live this year and especially Connor was beasting it up. Really impressive playing. As you pointed out his technique is brilliant.
@mantwonmaleik4044 Жыл бұрын
Oh Conner absolutely has made usage of both fingerstyle and pick. Checking out a lot of their live videos you'll see him swap back and forth a lot. Also glad you mention the Glass Prison stuff, I'm the current owner of that Purple Zon he was using at that time. He is an absolute genuine human and it's awesome to get to talk to and learn from him!

I was lucky enough to have a lesson with him. His finger technique was so precise. It was impressive. I asked to learn how to create bass line over chords progression and he came in with a simple jazz one. I couldn't play because I was so stressed out. He seemed so bored 😅.

I know @TheProgSchool has already made a very in-depth analysis of this track, but as a bass player myself, it's always nice to see a fellow bassist giving good insight on such a great song - and bassline! Conner is a nice and approachable guy. I'm not sure if @KillswitchEngage42 is still his channel, but you certainly give him a heads up to show here so can give his own take on what he does in this track. Regarding his Dingwall, I recall him saying in a video from their channel that he uses both fingerstyle and picking fairly equally, and that's why their basses were interesting to him.

Nice video. I’ve had this album on my phone but I haven’t got around to digging into it yet. Can’t wait to see your Dingwall when it comes in! Nolly’s play through of “prayer position” with his Dingwall and the DarkGlass pedal is one of my favorite bass tones.

Great song. Haken has become one of my favorites within the last few months. They have the technical capacity of DT, the power of TOOL, and the experimental capabilities of Queen, ELP and others. So Haken has pretty much all the best qualities of progressive music.

Love Haken. Whether or not you do a video on this or not, you need to check out him practicing The Messiah Complex for the tour they just did, you mentioned Hybrid picking the example he shows off in the two minute clip he posted of the 10+ minute song is by fair the best Hybrid Picking section in their discography.

I've seen Haken live a couple of times over the years, and I've also actually met Ross very briefly. Absolutely brilliant band, they do a really great mix of the more traditional Dream Theater type prog metal and stuff that sounds like the more modern bands. Conner Green is also one of my favourite bass players just because of the fact that he isn't an elitist when it comes to tone or technique and he'll use whatever he thinks fits the song the best.

I think it would be cool to see you breakdown the individual progression of a bass player. Like take a good example of the first Dream Theatre album and then compare how his playing has progressed to where he is today. Another interesting guy would be Alex Webster going from the early, sloppy Cannibal Corpse days to where he's ended up playing a much more technical style with Blotted Science. I imagine anyone with 30 years playing professionally playing might be interesting to see where they started vs where they are.

I tried out a thumbpick for a while to seamlessly switch between pickstyle and fingers. Only problem is sometimes it'd get caught on a string and get dislodged from the thumb. Really neat tool though

I'm trying to imagine playing a bass that has non-parallel frets like this. Does it have a practical purpose or is that just to create the distinctive look?
@LowEndUniversity Жыл бұрын
It’s different for sure, but you’ll acclimate pretty quickly. Yeah, it’s 100% practical - the lower strings are longer, higher strings are shorter. Keeps the tension and note character very consistent on every string versus floppy B and E strings. Lots of other benefits - intonation, feel, etc!

Last year I started playing an eight string guitar with a pretty wide fan and I was really surprised how quickly I acclimated, having played a standard guitar for decades. It actually feels really natural despite looking pretty weird at first.

Haken did change their sound a bit over the last few albums where they started incorporating a lot more "djent" influences and less classic prog influences. Personally, I prefer their earlier albums, but the new stuff is still superb and among the best modern prog out there.

the song is amazing. I'm such a fan of Haken - they just make the coolest textures and their stuff is always beautiful. That said, I'm not a huge fan of the clanky distorted Dingwall sound - it's really overdone these days. His cleaner tones he had before with his Zon bass were always awesome.

@@mantwonmaleik4044 I’ve been playing six string for so long my mind automatically filled in the c on top.
@mantwonmaleik4044 Жыл бұрын
He's definitely used B-C Standard tons before. A lot of Haken's songs he'll drop the B to A. One song he does half-step down. For the Virus album he changed to using F# Standard to add more low end definition, it gets a lot of usage on Invasion and different bits of the Messiah Complex. Conner tends to facilitate the common bass player though. He's charted sheet music/tab for all his albums with Haken. He says that it's not entirely necessary to play the majority of Haken's songs on 6 string and tends to chart most songs as a 5 string. He's tablature for this song is actually a 5 string tuning of BbDADG
@drzoidberg1987 Жыл бұрын
Yeah. On this song, the E is dropped to D as well. When they played it live in 2022, it was the only time I saw the band retune during their set - both the bass and guitar apparently needed that open D.
