i remember when i was a kid, Kanazawa doing a seminar in Frome, UK, hundreds of peoples attended, i was up the front and when he told people to pair up i was left on my Todd, he pulled me up onto his makeshift stage and he was my partner the whole seminar. white, yellow, blue, green, purple, brown, black. the purpose of the colours is to represent the colours closest to earth tones. traditionally, a student has one belt (white-used to hold the gi top closed). as they train and master the required techniques, the belt changed colour. the belt was never washed, once the belt was black, the student most likely did enough fighting and training to have mastered the techniques; resulting in the black belt status.
@MrBlackdog729 жыл бұрын

It never ceases to amaze me how some observers - particularly those preparing for Shodan - (first level) - believe that they can see everything in kata. The exponent is, of course, Kanazawa sensei. The precision is obvious and tha fact that his feet track the embusen so accurately is further evidence of this. This exposition is a testament to Kanazawa's technical skill, execution of breathing, power and control.

@njtr16 жыл бұрын
I agree. Its an EXERCISE to learn how to move in different directions. You can put whatever variations on it that you'd like. First however, it has to be learned very strictly, and very precisely. This takes years to learn. Once the kata is learned, you can play with it, and take a few techniques that you like from it, and add them to your arsenal. You also gain an ability to move in different directions with lightning speed and power. I honestly believe that to be what kata is all about.

Reminds me of a story i read somewhere. A 1. Kyu asked his sensei how long it takes to become a 1. Dan. The sensei examines the karateka and says; 7 years. The white belt asks; And if i train twice as hard ? 14 years, the sensei says.

Cool! This is a powerful kata, you really need to express yourself in these movements. In the slow movements, really slow down and coordinate them with your breathing. In the fast movements, try to be as sharp as possible. Don't rush through it, follow the timing and you'll be fine. Try to really show that you are using your hips. usage of multiple belts came about when a student had younger siblings who also studied martial arts.when the oldest student was promoted, their old belt was passed down to the younger sibling and the older sibling would get a new belt from someone else older than them. students in a school considered themselves a brotherhood so it didnt matter if they were actually related or not. my father has kept this tradition between me and my siblings, im the oldest so they get my old belts and so on

Yes they can be used for trained attackers, but they wernt designed for that purpose, that is FACT! Funakoshi said that if you master the Heians you would be able to defend your self in any self defence situation. Master Itosu wrote "It is not intended to be used against a single assailant but instead as a way of avoiding injury by using the hands and feet should one by any chance be confronted by a villain or ruffian". The single assailant he talks about is a trained guy.

Aneesa, if you can not remember the name of a Kata, you may not want to reach for things until they are taught to you by a qualified Sensei. It is often counter productive to force learning new kata that you might not be ready for. Some folks think by learning the movements of a new kata they are in fact advancing and that "knowing" all the kata of one's style makes them supreme being. it is the intuitiveness, and precision that exemplifies one's true level of knowledge. Some styles teach different applications (Bunaki/Oyo)of the respective Kata as a student's understanding evolves. we have five level of understanding. The physical, non cognitive, "performance, if you will" is but the first, entry level understanding. That being said, maybe it's Bassai Sho, or Pattsai your thinking of if close to Bassai Dai..(Bassai Dai should you looking for if you purely Shotokan.) Kata, as a pneumonic training devise should be void of audience inspires pleasantness or beauty. It is a battle with enemies? It is also a battle within itself. Aesthetic beauty comes from kata! Kime, and Kamae, are a Present and exuded from the Kata. (See The Dojo Reference, online.)Beauty should be recognized within the spirit of the person, the ability to be "in" the moment. You should feel the intensity and the calm, the speed, and the stillness, the breathing, and the final Kiai. Tsushima, Senshin and Zanshin, within each attack/response, of the Kata is the true beauti, the true test of one's ability. The kata that we find ourselves the least attracted too is the one that should be our main focus? The reason we do not choose it is because deep down we do not want to be reminded of the techniques we do not like. Thus our weak techniques become are best techniques. Oshi Shinobu Osu.

In Shotokan there is no yellow, just white, brown, and black. Michelle might be a Shotokan student.

lol what? belts go: Kyu 10 to 1: white,, yellow, orange, green, red, blue, brown sometimes brown comes in 3 grades, sometimes there is no red, sometimes there are two grades of blue

in my school most 3rd kyu are required by sensei to have Bassai Dai as our Tekui Kata. He chooses this kata for americans because we tend to have bad hip rotation. This kata improves it!

Learning this kata along with Seishan for my next brown belt. A few of the moves are slightly different in the version I am doing but this video is really helpful for me as I can continue to learn it at home.

It's sad that some clubs, and even organisations have forgotten their roots. Let us look at the history: Funakoshi (founder of modern karate) was a friend to Jigaro Kano (founder of modern Judo/jiu-jitsu) and took much inspiration from him. Mas Oyama, Funokoshis student, black belt in Judo, founder of Kyokushin. Judo, and self-defence techniques were all around Shotokan from the start; and it's very clear that both Funakoshi and his students were very open towards Judo/Jiu-jitsu
