Before doing BJJ, I did Karate on and off without any success. I was so focused on grading that I couldn’t appreciate what I was actually learning. After getting a blue belt in BJJ (which was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done), I returned to Karate, but this time not caring about grades. Now I can really appreciate the beauty and sophistication of kata. I couldn’t care less about getting a black belt in Karate, I just love turning up and perfecting every movement. RIP Kanazawa sensei. And thank you for your endless inspiration. Ossu!

Aaah!! You remind me of my senpai, sir! He didnt focus on taking grade Exam for higher belt ( when in fact, he is from the same line as the other black belts). He is still at green belt, and if Asked why, he said " i want to perfect myself first, my kihon and kata need to be polished more. I Will take Exam when i feel enough" He is the strongest on our school....( 0_0)/

I introduced my nephew to Shotokan then he went to a bjj school thinking it is more “applicable” besides the fact that you can do kata late into life, is there anything else I could tell him from your experience that would make him want to give Shotokan a serious try? He needs spiritual development more than physical at this point.

When I first started 17 years ago I only got to green belt. I stopped because of personal problems. Just last week I told my sensei that I'm ready to return, but as a white belt. So now I'm back at it. Thanks to continually watching these videos he doesn't know yet that I already know this Kata as well as all of the Heians Katas😎. Oss in Peace Sensei Kanazawa🙏🏿.

People! Stop arguing about the belt's colors and the official rules and so on! Karate is much more than knowing the name of a move and how to position yourself when using it, in order to get the next belt (whose color everyone is arguing about)! Karate is for your own progression, and to develop yourself, your body, mind and soul. You study a fighting discipline that teaches you much more than how to fight. The belt's colors and order have little importance compared to Karate's objectives!

It feels so damn bittersweet to watch kata videos especially this one, I'm 16 years old and I used to play karate when I was 7 years old until I was 10, this was the last kata I learned before my mom decided to make me stop playing karate and start basketball because I wasn't doing that good at karate and because it was too harsh for a girl in her perspective although I had a brown belt and was doing good at kumite even though I played with older kids, it's been around 6 years and I've been playing basketball for 5 years and I'm so happy in basketball I play well and have good friends there, but I've always felt empty and never felt the same as when I played karate, what make matters funnier I go to this sports club where my basketball court is literally beside the karate dojo which has windows that shows the karate player inside, I always look there and tear up a bit especially when I see my coaches, I'd love to play karate again but it's probably impossible? I'm not so old but I'm still not so young to start all over again, I barely remember all the katas I've learned before and even my kumite probably sucks right now, on top of that, would my parents support me? I'll miss being in the dojo so badly, I'm kinda sad:((

It's not late. In fact, you're still young! Go for it!! Please, Karate needs more female participation to foster strength in the next generations of women. Be the starting point, and teach women around you about the strength a woman can have! Also, about your parents, they should understand you have an identity of your own, outside of what they want you to do. And if Karate or Martial Arts is who you are, they should accept that with open arms and even be proud! Your mother probably has a dated view of what it means to be a woman. Women can be as strong as men (maybe not phisically obviously, but in spirit), trust me on this. OSS!!

This is an very good series of videos. At the school i study at, we learn a very similar, but more circular (or softer) version of this form , as well as the 5 Heian forms (i think this form is the least different, with 1 technique different, and 2 or 3 strikes that are executed with a slightly different technique). It is interesting to see the similarities and differences in styles.

@1980Alison If you think this kata is easy then you need to dig deeper into the meaning of the kata. For example, it is easy to break boards, bricks and baseball bats when you are free to move in all direction and you can chamber your striking hand. But Tekki teaches you how to use power when you have less movement of your body to generate power with. It's like Wing Tsun's one inch punch but for Karate.

@1980Alison Tekki is far from easy. The key to this and all of the kata in reality lies in learning to control the subtle movements of the hips. These hip movements are key to adding power to karate technique. One difference between black belts and kyu level students is the learning of these hip rotations. Once hip control is achieved then all of the kata and kihon waza are revisited and hip control is added.

@redkingish I think i depends on the organisation I know We in the ISKf use this for 4th-3rd kyu but personally i feel that Tekki is more then a bench mark as all the kata are. Heian shodan by a 10 kyu and a ju dan are the same kata but the ju dan may only understand it alittle more, I feel that is the absolute goal of kata to seek the truth in the bunkai and our selves. oss

@ikiru1996 People really get the wrong idea about kata. 1) At the highest level kata, kata is a medium for artistic and spiritual expression. In this way the practitioner bares their innermost spirit to the observer. This is much like the way a musician can convey ideas feeling and emotions to a listening audience without the necessity for spoken communication. 2) Kata is physical exercise with life-long rewards, long after age makes fighting impractical.

@osensei2987 I want to add something to your excellent comment. I'll add this: When the stance and body alignment are correct, and technique is allowed to flow its natural course, the power is tremendous. Dramatic body movement is not necesary for power. This becomes evident through correct makiware training. I can tell from your comment, that you are knowledgeable and understand this. Osu

Any karate you got in 30 mins isn't anywhere near real karate. Shotokan karate's first and foremost goal is perfection of the practicioner's character: can't be done in 30 mins. Takes a lifetime.

Well to put it simply you just need to search. Try the internet, though it isnt always reliable for finding your local clubs. Once you find a club ask what organization they belong to, a good club doesnt always belongs to some sort of national organization, but the ones that do usually keep a high standard. In the end the best way of choosing a club is simply watching them and deciding weather or not you think its worth it. :)
