I have 3 basset hounds, or rather 2 boys, and the girl died 3 months ago when she was thirteen years old and I miss her. She had thrombopathy and another one in her spleen. I rescued her when she was 5 months old and she was always happy, she has never lacked love or care. They are the most loving people on earth. They are a responsibility but also a great joy.❤

I own a basset hound, hes three years old and sometimes people describe them as laid back, after two years old they start getting more lazy but when my uncles dogs come over he runs and he barks and howls, they aren't the best dog if you want a more quiet dog or camp in an area with people who don't like noise. They're still great breeds! :)

I recently saw a basset rescue that recommended any adopter have a six foot fence. My first thought was is that six foot underground? That's one heck of a hole digging deterrent ! I can not imagine a basset scaling a six foot tall fence.

I'm considering different dog breeds. I was wondering is a basset good for a first time owner? And is it hard to potty train one? What is your experience and how long did it take? Last question, I heard they carry a smell or something I read on the internet due to sweat? Is it bad and what do you do for it?

Their smell comes most entirely from the neck up. They slop their food and their long ears lay in the food bowl so must be kept clean after meals. The inside of their ears and ear canals get a lot of earwax which is smelly. Maintenance here is crucial.

I have an eight year old Cletus and a five month old Dug Basset hounds. Smell is not the problem. They are most definitely not for a first time dog owner. Very stubborn and hard to potty train. They are easily distracted mostly because of their noses. They are food motivated. They must be kept cleaned especially the ears. They can get yeast infection and can lose their hearing from infection. They will eat anything, everything and will not stop eating. They can bloat and die from this. I had to fence in my five acres. I've had underground pet containment on my five acres and it didn't stop Cletus from chasing the deer and rabbits. I had to fence in my five acres. I raised many Rottweilers and will never have another breed outside of a Basset hound. I have a lot of experience in training and have a lot of patience. That's my saving grace

I feel bad for basset hounds. There’s nothing wrong with dogs with dwarfism. They get around fine and will live full enriching lives, but breeding them with the purpose of dwarfism being the main trait is sad. Basset hounds all have back problems, arthritis, and the possibility of blood disorders. The more their skin droops the more likely they are to need special ointment, eye drops, and some need surgeries to pull back the skin so they can walk/see. Some step on their own ears and that’s not good. I feel like they need to be the next dog breed to get a makeover.
