I feel like this song and The Weight of Living (Pt I and II) are about the same guy, somebody the singer knows/used to know, or maybe even the singer himself. Like a former "gifted child" that then grew up and experienced burn-out, and turned to drinking to cope. I don't drink, but I can sadly relate to the whole "gifted child" syndrome thing. I don't think I was ever really labelled as "gifted"(?) but growing up I always did pretty well in school, got good grades without having to put in too much effort. At least, I didn't have to study much, and often I was done with my test ahead of most everyone else. Sorry, I'm not trying to brag or anything, I'm just saying I can relate because I was frequently praised by my parents and teachers for being "smart" and told that I'd go far in life. But after graduating college (and even somewhat in college I suppose) I found myself struggling with basic adult things like self-control and discipline, overcoming challenges instead of giving up, sticking to a schedule, motivating myself, etc. Apparently good grades don't translate to getting a good job like I was led to believe, so many employers require you have experience but how tf do I get experience when no one will hire me because I lack experience?! Didn't help that I graduated college in 2020, in the shadow of the Covid pandemic lol. Now I struggle to find a decent-paying job with health insurance or afford a place of my own. I don't drink, do drugs, gamble, or smoke, but I admit that I probably do spend too much time on the computer/playing video games, and I have a weakness for sugar and sweets. So idk, maybe those are my "vices" lol. Anyway, didn't mean to turn this into a self-pity session, just wanted to say I can painfully relate to this song and the other two songs and how I interpreted them.
