Lyrics:
I was left to my own devices
Many days fell away with nothing to show
And the walls kept tumbling down in the city that we love
Grey clouds roll over the hills, bringing darkness from above
But if you close your eyes
Does it almost feel like nothing changed at all?
And if you close your eyes
Does it almost feel like you've been here before?
How am I gonna be an optimist about this?
How am I gonna be an optimist about this?
We were caught up and lost in all of our vices
In your pose as the dust settled around us
And the walls kept tumbling down in the city that we love
Grey clouds roll over the hills, bringing darkness from above
But if you close your eyes
Does it almost feel like nothing changed at all?
And if you close your eyes
Does it almost feel like you've been here before?
How am I gonna be an optimist about this?
How am I gonna be an optimist about this?
Oh, where do we begin, the rubble or our sins?
Oh-oh, where do we begin, the rubble or our sins?
And the walls kept tumbling down in the city that we love
(Oh, where do we begin, the rubble or our sins?)
Grey clouds roll over the hills bringing darkness from above
(Oh, where do we begin, the rubble or our sins?)
But if you close your eyes
Does it almost feel like nothing changed at all?
And if you close your eyes
Does it almost feel like you've been here before? Oh
How am I going to be an optimist about this?
How am I going to be an optimist about this?
If you close your eyes
Does it almost feel like nothing changed at all? Oh-oh

I dont think I will ever get tired of this song. Bastille is so flexible with their musical arrangements that they can play the same song in several different ways. It's one of the reasons I really adore these guys as a group; they don't limit their songs to one sound. They let it change and evolve as a continuous work in progress.

I woke up this morning and couldn t get it out of my head, and it came to me what it means. I know the author says it's about two corpses in Pompeii conversing about the disaster, but such writers don't always see the full meaning of what comes through in the work. To me it's about the crap - dark clouds - that can happen in life due to external causes or due to our own faults - "all of our vices" - and how if you close your eyes to it you might be able to pretend it isn't as bad as it is, just sit there and let the dust bury you. So it's both about putting up with bad conditions with denial instead of doing something about it, but also about waking from that denial and really making good come from it - being an optimist. "Oh where do we begin? The rubble or our sins?" Do we start with outward action, or changes within ourselves?

+ericjt1234 Actually, I believe that he's singing the song as if he was in the city when the volcano exploded and he see's some people frozen as they were under the soot and rubble. "The rubble or our sins" refers to their belief in a higher being (a god). He's questioning if they should start cleaning up the rubble or start praying for forgiveness for their sins which caused god to punish them. IMHO I know it's hard to pinpoint exactly what he's trying to say but Googling Pompei and doing some reading/research about Pompei and that time helps.
@SamFisherify
@SamFisherify 9 жыл бұрын
+ericjt1234 Lol you're like the people in South Park that misunderstood "Scrotum McBoogerballs" I think that if the author says what meaning it has it is what meaning it has. He sung it with that meaning, so there's no "hidden" one behind it that he didn't "see" Well, apart from that, i respect your opinion, and if for you the song means that, let that be that.
@ericjt1234
@ericjt1234 9 жыл бұрын
+SamFisherify - Well Sam, as an artist and writer myself and one who aims to be very aware of meaning my experience says otherwise. Like I said, artists and consumers often discover meaning in works after they are created. We are instruments for the Muses and learn from our own process and works as they unfold through our hands.

As much as I appreciate this song and Bastille in general for producing quality music, this dude's vocal technique is painful to watch where he flicks his head and body up to get a higher note. At any rate, I prefer the drums throughout the chorus of the original but also the violins of this version. Makes me sad I can't have both
@N0xxNam3
@N0xxNam3 10 жыл бұрын
You know he does that to prevent that the notes are louder, because he sings them louder... It would not sound that good if he would not 'flick his head and body up', he would be too close to the mic. You can see that in other live versions, where he has the mic in his hand he moves it away from his mouth, but he can't move this one, so he does that head flicking.. Idk I really like the way he sings..
@MisterAleksandr
@MisterAleksandr 10 жыл бұрын
N0xxNam3 I can see that being an explanation, but at the same time he's throwing his voice away when he does that cause he ends up sliding up to the note which, in my opinion, sounds sloppy. I mean from the frequency he does it, it might even just be a habit he's picked up when actually getting into the song. It's not to discredit him at all cause he can sing a million times better than I could ever hope to, but it just displays a poor understanding of vocal technique to me. But hey ho, there you go.
@Bbryton1225McK
@Bbryton1225McK 10 жыл бұрын
MisterAleksandr N0xxNam3 I agree with N0xxNam3, almost. If you listen to his voice change in the middle of the note, it goes from a very low octave to a higher one. When he needs to switch from such a low note to a high one it must require some extra force which is what I believe most people get confused with. Not meant to put down either one, just stating my own observations :]
@hauntedletsplays306
@hauntedletsplays306 10 жыл бұрын
Buddy just because he flicks his head and body up doesnt mean hes doing that to reah a higher note...Even i do it if i need to sing a high note for some people its just natural, when you sing a high note you want to put your head up and body well at least some people do.
@cascreed6386
@cascreed6386 10 жыл бұрын
Well I can actually understand where you might see this as poor vocal technique, only it couldn't be more proper. In choral training, you learn to work with your falsetto as much as possible (for male singers at least.) At some points in the song, ex: "I was left, to my own devices...." he uses his falsetto. but at other points: "... does it ALMOST feel like YOU'VE been here before?" he adds force and sings louder. This is because your falsetto is meant to display a soft sound (unless you're a metal singer, then ROCK ON!) But when you see him moving away from the mic. it is to dampen the sound a bit, and is, in fact, a very proper technique.

I love how their music can be the update, trending stuff but then also this "classical" vibe! Dan is my soul mate.

this is so lovely. I have loved these guys for a long time and I love all these new opportunities they get now that they've really made it big :) the hipster scum in me wants them all to myself but the rational human side of me loves that so many people get to enjoy what I have for so long!
