The strategy of Napoleon was to beat the two armies one after the other. Grouchy had the responsibility to contain Blucher meanwhile Napoleon was beating the english army. Napoleon has almost achieved it (he was actually beating the english army) but Grouchy let the Germans pass without even seeing them, that is what defeated the french army this day
@jordankidd44437 жыл бұрын
It was a united Anglo-Allied-Prussian effort - Wellington would not have fought without Blucher, and Blucher was frankly late to the party. However Blucher made up for it by thoroughly routing the retreating French in the night. Napoleon did not actually beat the English army, as his Guard was finally defeated. The most generous result for the French be to call it a draw; if Blucher had not arrived Wellington would have retreated just as he had done at Quatre Bras, with roughly equal losses on both sides.

Problem I have is no French canon or infantry come up to ruin the Nassau square etc during Neys 12 or so charges. An I'm pretty sure Le Haye Sant fell during that time an sharpshooters on the roof gained a line of sight over the men in squares.. The other issue is the relative amount of allied cavalry left when in reality the French cavalry had effectively established dominance over British cavalry by this point. Hence why the men couldn't leave square to defend themselves. Plus the cavalry used to wipe out the first french attack was to give Picton an the allied reserve time to reinforce the units smashed by firstly the movement of heavy artillery to the right and then that attack. I also thought there was already units on Napoleons right flank an he sent the Young guard to take some villages back? Still good.

If the timing on the map is accurate it's significant that as early as 2:20pm Napoleon started shifting significant cavalry and infantry reserves to shore up his exposed right flank preparing for Blucher's approach. The book Wellington's Smallest Victory chronicles how the Duke destroyed the career of an unfortunate Engineers officer in charge of a major scale model of the battle. After exhaustive research with surviving senior officers years after Waterloo, the officer (accurately) depicted the Prussians arriving far earlier than the Duke cared to acknowledge.
@BaronsHistoryTimes4 жыл бұрын
In retrospect, Wellington was in the thick of his many hotspots in his battlefront. It would've been hard for him to notice the furious assault the Prussians were making from the Paris Woods at 4.30 pm - almost 2 miles away - obscured by the intervening Grand Battery's smoke.

One quick note regarding 3:43: During the last stand of the Old Guard, no enemy troops could pursue the retreating army. Marshall Ney testified about this during his trial.
