The trek to reach St. Clair Cave involves hiking through the forest, and climbing down steep, slippery tree roots, but once inside, the cave is home to more than 2 million bats of at least 10 species, including the Critically Endangered Jamaican greater funnel-eared bat. BCI is working to protect these bats from dangers like predation by feral cats, while also working elsewhere on the island, such as Stony Hill Cave, to protect the last known maternity roost of the Critically Endangered Jamaican flower bat. Protecting these vital habitats is saving these species from extinction.
