Also, I planted about 50 feet of curved privet as an evergreen screen. I read that it’s invasive, but I have not had that issue. I haven’t looked at junipers because of their slow growth. I am interested in the needle holly. Does it grow faster than Nelly Stevens? Also oak hollies, can you give us some info on oak hollies? Thx ❤

Great video! I’m planning to plant some green giants and hollies as a privacy screen. Do you think I can plant them both together like two of green giants together and then Nellie Stevens hollies alternating? Please guide me on how to do this project. I like Both type of trees.
@batesnursery
@batesnursery 3 жыл бұрын
You absolutely can alternate Green Giants and Nellie Stevens holly. Just be sure to do your research as to how wide each of these get, you don't want to crowd them too close together. Green Giants and Nellie Stevens both get about 10-12' wide, so you'd want to space the trees about 10-12' apart when planting.

Southeastern NC: I have 4' chain link, next to the house on either side, parallel with the road, total of about 20'. I don't need the plants to be too tall, as it would overpower the small house. I would like it to screen the fence. Would a particular bush be good, or would a vine be more practical? Thanks!
@batesnursery
@batesnursery Жыл бұрын
Check out crossvine if you don't mind a beautiful semi evergreen blooming vine growing across your chainlink! Other wise most boxwoods or yew or compacta holly would do the trick.

If you get at least 6 hours of sun in that location, Green Giant arborvitae all the way. Fast growing, tall, strong screening plants that will get huge. Not to mention they will stop some of that dust. Plant them 15ft apart or set back a row just behind to fill the gaps. You'll need about 20 or so to cover that distance. You could also utilize faster growing "green wall" junipers like Brodie to get similar coverage.

@@rangerswife2176 In some cases deer can do that to arborvitae yes, but they'll usually leave the juniper alone. If you suffer from a lot of deer activity would recommend the Juniper instead.

What about in Pa ? For road noise
@batesnursery
@batesnursery Жыл бұрын
Most of these varieties will work in PA, but you might need to plant a few rows to significantly reduce the noise. Consider planting another tree slightly behind but in-between the two to cover the gap in the front row. It will make a big difference and help fill in the screen faster.

I'm also in PA and my understanding is that plants aren't good at blocking sound but for privacy from the street I planted Green Giant arborvitaes and they took off fast in full sun (planted about 7 years ago @6.5' tall, now @25'+ tall). For a smaller area I used an Emerald Green arborvitae which is also doing great in full sun (planted about 8 years ago @ 4' tall, now 12-15' tall).

I wish you'd held up the Elaeagnes and just said "Invasive. Don't plant." Our woods and wildlife rely on nurseries to demonstrate environmental ethics.
@batesnursery
@batesnursery Жыл бұрын
We also carry plenty of native junipers that would fill the niche perfectly. Our nursery only carries the hybridized Elaeagnus x ebbingei "Silverberry" and "Gilt Edge" cultivars that are not considered invasive. Of course, it's still a non-native plant and proper considerations should be taken when selecting the right specimen at other nurseries.
