Elephants are like horses in India and Mekong areas... Many are domesticated and work/live with humans to make a living. Natural habitats cannot sustain the number of elephants they have in these regions.

Elephant rides might not be the best or most noble alternative for these beautiful and precious animals. However, if it contributes to their continued survival (domesticated and in the wild), I am all for it. This public bathing is analogous to our zoo in that they help educate the public and sensitize the people into becoming advocates for the continued survival of elephants.

Once they become to old for work or hurt, the owners can bring them to the parks to be cared for(or the parks come get them). Yes, the ones used for work have been "broken", but you can't just put the elephants back into the wild. The ones that are ridden are the ones that have been used for work. Elephants born at the park are not ridden. This sort of park educates people, both Thai and tourists. The number of elephants used for work are dropping. It would be nice if we lived in a dream world where everything was perfect, but we don't. This helps the elephants live out their lives. Lives they wouldn't live if they were put back into the wild. This sort of thing is used as the country transitions away from using elephants for work. Once that is stopped, the elephants will be slowly transitioned to reserves. Try to live in the real world.

Rider has a whip, scar on the elephant’s back and the adult elephant isn’t allowed in the water. That is not normal. Elephants love water. Sadly, elephants are abused and tortured for human profit and entertainment. Check out “crushing.”
