I like Octagon quite a bit. I have to be in a very specific mood to want to listen to it though. It's a shame many Bathory fans listen to it once and completely dismiss it. If Bathory's discography wasn't filled with masterpieces I'm sure it would receive more love.

this is 1 of the issue with the mainstream, even if this was before & the ppl in Metallica could have been influenced by this or at least the band as a whole, this will probably always b references as "the st. anger before st. anger/Metallica before Metallica" etc. type of thing instead of it being recognized as Bathory or Octagon it's reduced to being a clone of something. that's what the industry does. they're a masterclone.

I know why too. I bought the cd when if first came out because Bathory were my favourite band in the 90s. But I really didn't like it. I tried again today and it still doesn't sit with me. I love everything else he did, even his solo albums, which I love much more now than when they came out (except for "Boy", that was epic from the moment I heard it). But this is one album of his I still struggle to find a place in my hammerheart for.

Just a random thought from a newer fan of Bathory whilst/after listening to this one for the second time: So the idea of metal music in general is effectively defined by the notion of carrying a weight and/or abrasive quality (or at least an approach to those concepts) that separates it from other music. The primary goal of Black Metal being more or less to sharpen and point that abrasion in a specific direction, effectively raising a middle finger in the face of Christian religious institutions. It is through this precise lens that I recognize the irony baked into these two albums, as the specific flavor of irreverence they possess seems to take that same middle finger and turn it on the most zealous of those amongst his own fanbase instead... I.E the sort who take it and themselves so seriously that their attitude effectively makes them just as difficult for the rest of us (who are just trying to enjoy some music) to deal with as their religious counterparts on the other side of the fence. I'm sure you've probably had the misfortune of running into at least one in your time, some snob simply too far up their own ass about some aspect or another of it all... That feels like a clear goal of these albums, to ruffle another set of feathers that need ruffling and remind us listeners that it's not just okay, but arguably vital to laugh at yourself once in a while (the chorus of "33 Something" comes to mind here, it's so over the top that if you're taking those words seriously at face value... you might just be doing it wrong.) Let me be clear, I think there is also genuine anger Quorthon was venting here. Toward the world, it's relentless grinding wheel, and how that wheel inevitably pushes us all into the dirt sooner or later. But consider that this album in particular closes on a cover of a fucking KISS song rather than the usual Winds of Mayhem outro, and think about the message that represents. It's like, yeah there's horror and misery everywhere if you look for it... but there's good shit too. One reason KISS was immensely successful as a live act (not the only reason perhaps, but still important) was because their shows were ultimately a source of positivity in the world, an event so very many people went to in order to enjoy themselves. Not to gripe at injustices, not to worry about how to make the future world a better place... But rather to live in the moment, and try their hardest to make that moment worth remembering. I get the impression Quorthon was in a way showing respect for that, recognizing it's worth despite personally deciding the stage wasn't for him pretty early in his life as an artist. At least, that's what I choose to think. I never met the man myself, and it's not like I'll ever have the chance. But next time I raise a glass, it will be in his name either way.
