album could have some remastering but overall a pretty good album not talked about much, i love its guitar solos and the tracklist really flows and its lyrics makes it unique. I read somewhere that prior to this Quorthon worked on a Classical/Medieval album with the same name from 1999 to 2000 but felt like it took Bathory the wrong way so he scrapped it which is rather unfortunate but i get why he did that.

I said somewhere that Quorthon was a versatile musician and on this album he gave us a versatile album, some songs sounds like they were leftovers from the albums Octagon and Requiem but i have no problem with that, i learned to enjoy all his albums even those two under the Quorthon name, Quorthon is certainly one of the most interesting artists in the metal music.

It's kinda like Quorthon made a metal mix tape, a little bit of most of his styles on one album and it absolutely works. He definitely had the talent to combine heavy and mellow together into something very cool.
@HS_Gomikubi5 ай бұрын
I had much the same impression on my first listen, but after coming back to this album months later and taking a closer look it became apparent to me that that sentiment is only really true of about half the songs (those being "Lake of Fire", "Destroyer of Worlds", "Ode", "Pestilence", and "Day of Wrath") while the rest of the album follows the precedent set by "Bleeding", which is a clear step straight back into the thrash era. The order of the tracks are arranged in a way that makes for this weird shift, "Pestilence" being a moody, grandiose piece that seemingly washes away the taste of "Bleeding" by reminding the listener of the album's primary thesis... Before plunging right back into thrashland with a solid 30 minute deluge, a few ambient background sfx here and there all to separate them from the sound of Octagon and Requiem, albums Quorthon arguably wrote the way he did as a means to process the backlash he had to deal with from members of his early fanbase who were salty about the change represented by Twilight of the Gods. But after going through all that, "Day of Wrath" has a certain palette-cleansing effect of making the last 30 minutes seem like a blur. It brings the vibes set by the opening tracks back into focus, and then starts hitting you with the callbacks as it's lyrics deliberately namedrop his previous works. In doing so it seems not only to tie the album itself together, but also everything else Bathory had done up to that point. It implies a farewell, a sendoff to mark the end of something... Or, perhaps to him it was more a way of asserting himself by summarizing it all in the same breath, as to remind people that Twilight and Blood on Ice, even the thrash albums are just as much his own blood and sweat as the first four albums. To summarize, while I agree that what he does on the half that actually does mix between disparate influences totally works, the overall experience is weighed down by what takes up the rest. I have no reason to believe this was anything but intentional on Quorthon's part, it speaks to how frustrated he must have been upon pouring his heart out in the letter that accompanies Blood on Ice... Only to likely end up dealing with just as many whiny idiots, all for daring to publicly admit that he was just a person who struggled with self-doubt like anyone else rather than the baby-eating, cave-dwelling embodiment of the anti-christ some wanted to believe in.

This BATHORY album is a bit above mediocre. The best songs are very much in the Hammerheart/Twilight vein, thus nothing really groundbreaking, as was the case with all the albums released during the 80s. A couple of songs are awful, take White Bones, sheer modist crap, shame on Quorthon. But he had worse times before, we must recognize.
