I’m glad you replaced the motor instead of replacing the hole thing, thank you.

I have that same exact fan with the same grey motor and it did the same thing. I tried oiling the motor and trying to work the oil in but no luck - just replaced it with the black motor which btw uses like 20-30 less watts than the original. My only issue is it’s right above the shower so the metal ring rusted on the lamp shade. I’ll replace it... someday.

Steve, my bathroom fan was taking several minutes to spool up to full speed. Before watching this video dummy me didn't know you could oil these motors. After watching this video I pulled out my motor and oiled it up and it works like brand new now. A new motor is about $100.00 so that makes a total of about $500.00 you saved me by watching your various informative videos all together. God bless ya brother, thanks a million! You are awesome!!!

The old motor HAD oil ports, which means it was meant to be oiled. That is why it was starting to get stiff is a lack of lubrication. a good cleaning and lubricating and it would have been fine as the windings were okay. Evan the so called permanently lubricated motors have the same issue, the problem is there are no oil ports. There is no such thing as a permanently lubricated motor, all motors have bearings that need lubrication, and even if they don't have oil ports, they can be taken apart and the oil wick around the bearings can be oiled and they will be good to go again. The fact that the old motor had oil ports and the new one does not shows the old one was of better quality as it was made to be serviced and last, whereas the new one was designed to be replaced and thrown away. Issue is that the old one was treated as a new one and thrown away.

Doing maintenance for complexes, you'd be surprised just how many fan blades, motors, hardware, housings, etc... there are that are VERY similar to one another.... And, getting a specific part for old school stuff like that ain't exactly cheap... Wild goose chase, or fabricate something half the time is more like it... Sheesh!

if the fans catches the house on fire be sure the motor says "Thermally Protected" on it. as most bathroom exhaust fans the motors are of the shaded pole type the smaller ones like Broan and Nutone they use a C frame shaded pole motor. the newer larger bath fans use an imported motor of the PSC type. i seen worse one fan the motor bearings were wore out it got hot and actually melted the fan blade to the motor as i remembered it did not catch on fire but the motor was tripping on its automatic thermal protector. . Nutone generally uses a motor by Universal Electric CO. as Regal-Beloit owns most of the motor brands. the smaller C frame fans the Nutone Mercury they use a C frame motor the older ones use a Gould electric motor then the replacement motors were made by Jakel, Uppco Inc then it was A.0.Smith, wome went to motors made in Hong Kong by Johnson Electric the same brand that makes small dc motors for hair dryers. and others they have a generic chinese C frame motor in these small bathroom fans and thats is now a replacement for Broan- Nutone fans. the company today is known as Broan- Nutone LLC. they made ceiling fans, intercom systems Nutone is a good brand.

i learned about these motors these new bathroom fans use imported motors as stuff is made in China now most of the time their quality is not up to snuff. for Bathroom fans the motor must say "thermally Protected" on them so it be a safety measure to prevent fires. i would use a respectable bathroom fan either Broan or Nutone. stay away from the other brands all Chinapride.

Yeah when the grease is all hardened up and sticky like that these motors are certainly fixable with some bearing cleaning and some good oil. When doing work for a customer the safest bet is just to replace it though, unless they suggested trying to revive it AND were well aware it may not last very long.
