I am really enjoying this bathroom build, Rodger. It really got to me when you talked about retirement. I know how you feel. I am nearly 66, and as an electrical cable jointer, I'm really enjoying working with my son. I find it physically hard some days, especially in the winter months. It's not until someone points it out that i worry about it. I've no desire to pack in just yet. Ignorance is bliss. In my head, I'm probably in my 30s.

@@SkillBuilder That Loctite product seems very expensive to me. I like Permatex 80632 (4 USA fl oz / 118ml size) which is a PTFE loaded thread sealant which I originally bought because it is the manufacturer recommended product for sealing pipe joints on my Jeep but it does a great job on plumbing joints as well. It comes with a handy brush attached to the inside of the lid and is a lot faster to use than PTFE tape. It's not cheap, but even so it is still half the price of Loctite 577 and I reckon that one 118ml tin will go one helluva lot further than a bottle of Loctite. I got mine originally from US Automotive in Milton Keynes via eBay but their web site is pants and they no longer seeming to be advertising on eBay either, so here is a link from a different eBay seller: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Permatex-Thread-Sealant-with-PTFE-General-Purpose-Fitting-Sealant-118-ml/292852224661?epid=27026801982&hash=item442f5a5295:g:Cf4AAOSwbKdcCUI4 Permatex is an American outfit and in the 'states they also do a 16 fl oz (American) version which goes by the part number 80633 but I've never seen this on this side of the pond here in the UK.

Tiling to the NHBC would be asthetics which I've found they're not too concerned about. They're interest lies in whether the property is structurally sound, water tight and if the drainage is installed correctly. They're the costly things to insure against.

Roger, going back to the issue you had on this video, if the bath mixer has a 1/2 input, is there any point putting in a 22mm pipe? The bath filler I have has a 1/2 female inlet and my triple shower valve has an outlet of the same size. My question, does a larger pipe make any difference when the appliance has a small bore? Or will the flow rate improve by adding in 3/4 adapters and 22mm pipe? Your videos have been a god send. Thank you!
@SkillBuilder4 жыл бұрын
There is very little you can do if the flow or pressure is not adequate. Robin had an issue with his bath taps and it turned out to be flux residue in the filters. Once they were cleaned it made a big difference. I use a 22mm pipe out and two 15mm pipes in.

@@ralphsterz2889 These days I would not look at a bathroom job for less than £10,000. How come you didn't do the wiring before boarding the room out? As for that junction box (looks like a Wiska?) it was prob' the only one he had in the van?.. Top job though Roger. Really liking this series of vids'👍🏻
@TheChipmunk20085 жыл бұрын
Just a guess, but from experience, the customer may have just had a vague idea and come up with other ideas as the job progressed. it seems a law that this happens on every job. The huge box (yep definitely a wiska) might be the electrician being sensible (I know I AM one but hear me out...).. the driver may well be tiny, but they get hot. And they don't appreciate humidity. The box might be his (or her) belt and braces approach to making sure the driver doesn't die prematurely? I'd personally have looked for a roofspace or void above that would be accessible and run the LV and mains to there, to allow for the inevitable replacement without relying on waterproof boxes... but i haven't seen the overall site)
@TheChipmunk20085 жыл бұрын
(addition: it's not only the customers who do that, sometimes I (sparks) have a brain(wave/fart) half way thru the job and come up with an easier or better way... but that involves rummaging around in finished work)
@SkillBuilder5 жыл бұрын
TD The idea was to put all the wiring in behind the pre-wall but that would have meant putting the UH control mid way in the hall. It just looks better beside the light switch. It is all very well getting the sparks to do everything but they can't always be there when you need them and Jubi had two days to do the boarding, Happens all the time

As an update to some of my other posts across this series, I finally used the Abacus boards last week on a ensuite shower refurb. I ordered the kit from Rubberducks bathrooms. Yes the 12mm boards are easy to work with however if stud work work is poor or it's the steel type then these boards are no good because there's just too much movement. The boards rely on strong closely built studs and noggins so the amount of prep work needed on an existing wall could quickly undermine the benefits/cost. So unless you've built the walls yourself I think you need to be very aware of unlying structure before ordering the Abacus system. For me I am going to stick with moisture resistant plasterboard and a tanking kit. Yes it's a little more effort but it's a system that seems to work best for existing shower refurbs. And it's a lot cheaper! Find me at twitter.com/getbry
@robsurf3602 жыл бұрын
Surely with plasterboard you still need a solid fitting behind, if you are tiling?
@getbry74522 жыл бұрын
@@robsurf360 Absolutely! Either dot and dabbed to walls or stud work etc. Since my original post I've seen other installers use this system over ply which would make for a solid wall and excellent fixing but this would significantly increase the building costs!

@@getbry7452 thanks for the reply. I have steel work, which I’m struggling to see the benefit of! I’ve always been under the presumption that going straight onto plasterboard wouldn’t be strong enough, if tiling the whole wall?

Spark probably used bigger box because of heat dissipation of the driver, they get very hot and obviously he can't put it in a smaller box and drill holes because he would lose IP rating. More airflow in a bigger box, it would be like a lightbulb in a biscuit tin.
