Great job on literally peeling away the layers of modification and history! Such an enormous task, but as you do it, you reveal more of your anticipated plans and design as you discuss the issues and fixes. We're working hard to get the hull structurally sound again and to get the (good working) engine maintained and future proof. A side project is to get back living on the boat again. I think if we have achieved this goals the worst part of the project is behind us and we hope we can achieve all that by the end of next year. It's a slow and steady process.

Very true! The sooner we get to a clean slate the sooner we can beginn to build up again. For the color of the wood in the wheelhouse, I think they used Mahogany wood stain to make the plywood darker. Do you think that's possible?

G'day Crew, Well Daniel & Barbara , this looks like a big job , however there are some really big rewards for undertaking this work . No doubt it will take some time skill and expense to complete the work to a standard suitable to achieve all the desired results . But this hasn't stopped you guys in the past . It would be great if some skilled volunteers would be willing to assist you with undertaking the work till completion. It will also make for some great content too. So now it's just a matter of time before you have the results you are aiming for . Best wishes with the work ahead , this will put a BIG SMILE on the face of Flying Coney . Dealing with the insullation use a garden spray can with water to spray first, keeps the dust down.

A good advice but we don't have running water near the boat at the moment. What we did was using a putty knife so we could take off the insulation as complete sheets. Almost nothing is sticking to the steel. Luckily the whole process wasn't nearly as dusty as expected.

Great video, thanks very much for sharing. Would an easy, temporary solution to stop the water seepage be to paint/ seal the top of the concrete on the outside for a good distance along the edge of the deck outside, I have found Owalatrol oil to be a good thinner/ additive when added to primer. It seams to help the paint spread out / soak in and stick... You might need to rig a tarpaulin up. Very interesting to discover more of the history of your wonderful ship . Thanks again

I think a little bit of Sika will do the trick. I think that the steel was just placed on top of the concrete with some sealant in between. Sika from the inside, sika from the outside and let's hope for the best. Another possibility is that the concrete itself is saturated and the water travels within the concrete. That would be not so great.

It seems like to me you take one step forward and two back! You have lots more drive than 98% of the people out there. It is very interesting to watch, but I must say, I am glad it is you. I think you are doing an amazing job!

Let's face reality, we didn't wanted to have a refit project and ended up with a complete rebuild. That means we need to rip everything out, safe the parts that are in good shape and start to build up from scratch. That we do have human necessities like sleeping or eating does slow us down a bit but it's heading into the right direction.

Well, its great that the leakage is going to get fixed. I would look and see if you could source sheet metal that is thick enough for a deck, and get some I-beams to reinforce the sheet metal for the deck. Either that or reuse some steel. If you were to buy 10mm thick sheet metal, it would cost you like 27k for 100m2 (at least the place where im looking (limtrade(seems to have good steel profiles and sheets))). But then its all good probably. This welding job can be done for cheap if you know how to weld. Thank you for uploading, and I hope you will have a shower to enjoy in the boat soon. I am getting a bathroom job done myself, so now i have to shower elsewhere, so I know how it is (and I do hope they will finish/repair the bathroom soon). Now its not like I'm just going for a shower, now you have to go for the other shower.. Happy its there.. :) Greetings, Jeff

There are still a few mysteries. When was the wooden deck sheeted over and when was the gutter filled up with concrete? The imagination of getting rid of the concrete gives me nightmares at the moment. That will be quite a job and let's hope for volunteers.

Hi Dean, yes there's plenty of space underneath the deck. Almost full standing hight. So with about 1 meter in addition it's about 2,5 meters. But that means we need to remove all the old deck and the concrete filled gutter and that will be one hell of a job.

We're already floating quite a lot higher and finally level. For the concrete we have to remove below the waterline I think we need to compensate by bolting heavy steel bars to the keel. But everything that is above the waterline is kind of unnecessary weight.

First she fished for Katwijk (KW 34 Tiny) then she was sold to Scheveningen (SCH 10 Leendert). She was sold back to Katwijk (KW 71 Eckhart). The picture was taken at the time she was registered as KW 71 but I don't know for sure in which harbor.

Here in Europe we must do the biggest part of the refit while Flying Coney is in the water. There's just no affordable space where you can put the vessel on the hard.

I feel kind of sorry for you, having to deal with a starting point in such poor condition. But it's all just pieces of steel and wood put toghether many decades ago. It's done once, and I'm sure you can do it again, as long as the economy part of it works. I think a metal working and welding course would pay off quite quickly.

We do have enough ship to practice to make our welding pro level. We already did a bit stick welding and will buy a MIG/MAG machine quite soon. The problem is that the hull is quite difficult to weld and you need a certified welder so that it's class legal.

@@FlyingConey Yes. It's of course neccessary to use sertified welders on the hull and other critical places. I'm thinking about the smaller, time consuming parts. They all add up to the cost. And with the "amount of ship" you have to work on, I'm sure you will be quite good at welding. But my point was to take a course and learn how to do it proper. It's easy to weld something to look ok, but with the wrong asjustment on the machine, the weld will under-perform and break under less load than expected (that's why you use sertified welders on critical parts). A course, would help you to avoid such traps. Do understand me correctly. I admire your will and guts to chase this goal of yours!

it's the first destruction and look at the inside of the superstructure. It was added about 30 years ago. We do believe that the color of the bulwark is the original one maybe even from her fishing days.

I really feel sorry for you guys, love your videos, but this vessel is like a bad joke. Worst buy possible, nothing really historic left about the vessel, no interior, exterior, a mix of styles Etc…..you really should have done more dd about the vessel before buying. I guess you bought it, because you didn’t found anything else, not a good reason to purchase a vessel!

It's one of the last riveted fishing vessels built in The Netherlands and one of the last ones with the hull shape of a drift netter. This makes a far better sailing ship out of her. Yes we do have to remove a lot of stuff that was added on later. So yes it was the worst buy possible but only because the previous owner messed up the electric system. But it's also the best possible hull for a sailing ship conversion.

Mir graut ein wenig davor den Beton auszustemmen, aber hilft ja nichts. Auch das Holzdeck muss weg und dann müssen wir die Wand ein kleines Stück nach unten hin verlängern. Spannend wird auch in welchem Zustand sich das Stahldeck über dem Maschinenraum befinden. Also ja, ums kurz zu machen viel Arbeit und genug Arbeit für jeden der mithelfen möchte 😉 Beste Grüße.

Der ganze Beton soll so oder so raus. Nicht nur bei der Wand sondern auf die komplette Länge vom Boot. Wir möchten ein durchgehendes Stahldeck haben und dieses auf die bestehenden Deckbeams legen. Ich schätze mal wir werden erst das Holzdeck entfernen, mit dem Plasmaschneider die innere Wand der Rinne entfernen und dann mit dem Abbruchhammer den Beton rausmeißeln.

Die Wasserrinnen kenne ich von der Kruzenshtern und der Santa Maria Manuela . Die sammeln das überkommende Wasser und es fließt schneller ab .

Why don't you finish a part of the hull and install a cabin as intended for later to live in there? Installing a temporary cabin again in the aft space is a lot of work, money and waste for nothing to me. I believe everyone needs also to think about the environmental impact of building something and the temporary cabin is just waste later on. I see of course that the replacement of the entire deck will influence the installation of a cabin in the hull as well. As the coming winter doesn't allow to lower the aft deck house or part of the deck replacement I'm asking myself if the wooden deck has not been visible before when you removed the interior below. Replacing the deck in parts and covering the gap with glued foil and insulating wood would be a better and more straight forward way to me.

We need a place to live and renting an apartment is too expensive for us. The projects are all interlocking so it will be at least 1-2 years until the hull is ready to move in. I think you overestimate what we mean by making a temporary living space in the aft cabin. But temporary solutions always suck. I agree with it but we've considered everything and believe me, it's the best solution.
