Merry Christmas (even if I am a bit late). Your interior layout is great. I think you are right to create a large space inside for resting, just in front of the galley. If Yaba was mine, I would have kept the big bedroom, but she is your boat, so your choice is fine :-) Looking forward to see everything in place.

Great episode. Looks like a great use of space. You should consider swapping the sink and the stove in the galley. It is advisable to put the sink as close to the center line as possible on a monohull to reduce the impacts of healing when under sail. It is also better to have the stove parallel to the centerline so that if you are considering a gimbaled stove, that it will swivel with the boat healing. Finally, having the stove on an outer wall allows for an opening port above it for ventilation.

Great use of space assuming they are transporting a reinforced platoon. The suggestion of switching the sink and the stove while good is pedantic at best considering the fact that the vessel is a essentially a house boat. This isn't a blue water cruiser.. Those windows are great for an apartment, not for an offshore cruiser.

May I say that I agree with the earlier comments regarding your own cabin and the beds. Not being able to access the bed from each side is a real pain. This is your boat, your dream and your life! Give yourselves a decent stateroom cabin that is truly comfortable and livable, then, and then only, provide for crew/guests! Love your work XXX

Guys…consider a washer and dryer. You can stack them! I would use drawer type fridge and freezer rather than top loader. Much better for inventory rotation. Merry Christmas! 🎄

Fully agree with this good comment, wrt washing machine and dryer: a washing machine as a minimum, especially when sailing for longer with more guests. You could consider ti place it in or near the storage/work space to make it easier to plumb in the drain and water supply to the nearby head. Keep up the good work en een gelukkig nieuwjaar!
@DerekUrquhart3 жыл бұрын
Hope you take the input as positive. Top loading fridge and freeze very difficult to manage food and get to anything without removing a lot of food. If you go gown this route make sure you have baskets that are easy to remove. The kitchen design is so important you need it to work very efficiently and after all the time you have spent it is so important to get it right for you. Worth considering pros and cons before you proceed. It you can fit washer and dryer in engine room that would be a good spot. Even if you cant do everything now consider for the future when budget allows.

This boat can not see ANY wind or rough water. So I don't see much point in a top loading fridge and freezer at all.

Very important to design in to your new spaces a good ventilation system, including the bilge areas as well as the interior spaces you have designed. The areas outboard of the cabin, where the space is low, can be used for the ventilation system. It could provide for cross flow ventilation of the bilge areas, as well as for fresh air flow into the new cabins, heads, and galley.

Don't know if this applies to boats too, but people building Skoolies (US schoolbuses converted to RV) usually leave a few centimeters/inches - 15cm - space all around the bed/bunk area - specifically to be able to get a hand in and under the mattress.... You will be changing sheets and lifting mattresses to air them a LOT. Many a Skoolie owner re-did his sleeping arrangements specifically to get this feature... I suppose you did try out "moving space" - how much space and exactly where do you need to do specific tasks?? Change cloths: Need moving space around the upper body - spread out arms, bend over to reach your feet, lift your knees, sit on the bed. Bathroom: standing space in the shower, lift knees, move around without hitting the shower head, soap-cup, etc... Toilet: you can put a LOT of storage above the toilet - map out the space the tallest person would need to sit down/stand up - you'll be amazed! (When you finally sit, up-right, which nearly no one does on the throne - your head could be easily only 30 mm away from the ceiling - when you get up you ALWAYS will lean forward and your whole upper body will go through an arc moving forward and up!)... You want to play through every job and location on your boat! Engine room! Galley, bathrooms, Navigation... It is surprising how many areas you find where you actually do not need the allocated space and others, where it looks roomy, but still is not enough!! Cheers....

Looking Awesome!! 👍 What about a wood burning stove it's always great to have a wood stove? nothing dries a boat out better than a wood stove. it is the best dry heat. Even if you're not going to be in warm climates it's always good to have something that can dry the boat out really quick. Also you may want to consider reversing your positioning of the kitchen sink with the stove. You always want the sink as close to the center of the boat as possible to prevent water from splashing out while it's healing. Also you probably want to put a gimbal stove in. that you would need to have parallel to the center of the boat in other words we're the sink is now.

Made it to the last one (so far). Quite a journey you are on. I hope you enjoy the completed project as much as (or more than?) the rebuilding. The new layout? Not what I would have done but my needs are different. We have two adult sized boys who need their own space and so two single bunk rooms with enough size for a desk each might be a plus... or at least we need a set of four desks should we contemplate living on board for longer than 4 weeks or so. Of course, with snow on the ground, it would be noted that we would also require better insulation and a heater. The rear deck for us would need to be able to be closed in with canvas (of some sort) at least, though having it open in the summer would be best. All that to say, you have done a wonderful job. The overall design is quite interesting and when compared to North American/European boats the hull has a rather low sheer /freeboard making a sealed bulwark with no scuppers pretty much a requirement for added freeboard. It makes the boat cabin top really quite low too an interesting look. Anyway, make the boat your's rather than "the boat the internet built" (guess where I stole that from) as you will have to live with it.

Hello, i love watching your progress and I'm sure your boat will be outstandingly beautiful. How many meters are your beam? I have not filed much, but did two months in the Pcific, only dreading of another outing. my limited experience made me think about mainly 3 things of importance in the galley. 1 Acces to fridage section, you want to be able to reach the bottom furthest away. 2 Placing of the stove, when you are in rough seas or healing. Maybe a gimbaled stove. 3 Floor space in the galley. You often want to have support standing at the stove or at the sink when underway. Do not be afraid to have less floorspace in the galley. It will be more secure. Happy New Year. Im looking forward to the next episodes. And not the least to see the final result. Maybe some day be lucky enough to see the beautiful scooner in person.

The Master bedroom can have a 'sliding or accordion door' nestled into the bulkhead between the closet and the head. When needed, it can be slid out to close off the main room and the head will become accessible to everyone without disturbing the sleepers. You can even install an 'Ocupado' slider on the main cabin door to let folks know if the head is available...And, vents or louvers are a must on the doors to keep mold down and allow for fresh air circulation. We used PVC mesh matting under our mattresses to allow air flow through the holes in the mattress support, did away with the clammy moisture build up and odors... 😋

I think your *"needs"* should be to switch placement of sink(s) and stove (in case you want to use the stove when sailing) As all sailors know, the sink should be located as much as possible to the center of the boat, ie pivot point, and the stove should be gimballed cross-longitudinally. Also, you have the space and I presume you might one day have a water-maker, so why not make space for a washing machine? ((in the 'unused' storage room?))

Just a general cooking thing but its good to have the cooker and the sink near to each other and preferably where you dont have to transfer hot pans and liquids across a communications space ....if you have a set down space between the cooker and the sink drainer it needs to be high temperature resistant material . Keep electrical items away from steamy areas and have high fiddles on the edge of most prep areas to stop dishes and spills going over the deck with sudden boat movement. It also stops spilled boiling liquids running over legs and bare feet. As well as giving you something to grab when the boats rocking at sea.

I am not a friend of flat box coolers or freezers on a boat - you cannot find a thing if needed quickly enough, then you start to throw things around and creat more difficulties the next time you search for something. Vertical ist way better, you have everything orderly before your eyes, and it needs less space too. Happy new Year to you!

There are a lot of good comments already. Hopefully you are open minded about accepting advice because there are a lot of experienced people offering their comments. Every design decision on a boat is a compromise. As long as you are happy with your design, that's the most important thing. I have lived and cruised on a wooden boat. We had minimal access around our bunk. I didn't mind but making the bed is a challenge. A good feature of this design is you can't fall out of bed if you are up against a wall in big waves. Big waves can come along even in protected anchorages from large boat wakes. One caution that I didn't see in other comments is that a wet head can cause rot on a wooden boat. Avoid it if you can. I installed a full wrap around shower curtain in ours and that significantly reduced water spraying all over the head. But if a big wave comes along while you are in the shower, there is nothing to grab on to. Usually owner's cabins are located in the stern because there is less movement in the stern compared to the bow. Whatever you decide to do, you will adapt and enjoy. Happy New Year from Juneau Alaska!

Looking good for sure I imagine you guys can use the storage area kinda like an office as well for editing videos etc.. where is the tv at for movie nights?? you may want to consider closing in the back area even partially with windows kinda make it a sun room so when it rainy or get sick you can hang out there with coffee, work, etc.. no matter the weather. Air conditioning in that space would make it huge gathering area for guest games etc. you could even use blinds curtains or tinting the glass whatever you wanted.

Add a washer dryer, dishwasher, and more cold storage. You will find that the "big" standard refrigerator and freezer are much cheaper and easier to replace when they fail. You have an eighty foot boat, you are probably going to need more food storage. Also note wet heads are not ideal. If you can design the heads to have separate showers you will probably be happier in the future.

Merry Cristmas, I know your project will be a success. I think it would be nice to sail along as a paying passenger, who does nothing, I'm already old. A long time ago, I sailed along the Moluccas for six months in a wooden schooner with a crew that looked very much like pirates. That was truly one to never forget. I have another tip for furnishing. Make a toilet right next to the wheelhouse, when there is a heavy storm it is annoying to waddle all over the ship to pee. This may not seem important but it is. Also install a large pump with its own power supply that is in a dry place, so above the waterline. Also good luck very nice video channel.

There is very limited space on the sides of the bunks. It is extremely difficult to make up beds with access to only one side of the bed. It is even more difficulty when there is no access to either side of a bed. I know that you are designing for a large number of people, but that will likely be for a small percentage of the time. At least, have the bed that you two will normally use have access on both sides and the end to eliminate the pain in the a** of making the bed not be a normality. Side access doesn't have to be a lot, just enough to give access. Just a thought.
@henesy3 жыл бұрын

Having beds with one side against a wall makes them a 'pain-in-the-butt' for two reasons! One is making the bed, tucking sheets and blanket against the wall.
