No terrariums. No myths. No nonsense. Get the straight facts from guys who grow and propagate thousands of carnivorous plants every year, since 1995.

Gee fellows, this is one of the most interesting videos you have ever done. I really liked the way you demonstrated each of the steps (the nitty-gritty) of the entire process of rehabbing the bath tub bog. Also, the timeline progression showing the changes in growth of the plants through May, was really cool to see. I hope you do some more demonstration videos similar to this in the future. Thanks for the video.

No bathtub bog, but I did re-purpose an old (PVC) wheelbarrow into an amazing bog garden. Too bad I can't add photos here. I'd show it to you! I have a 55 gallon barrel I plan to cut in half (lengthwise) and turn both halves into bogs, too! It's going to be amazing :)

Dudes. Wonderful as always. I see that you use way more petite than I do which explains why I have so much trouble and don't have nearly the large growth rate and plant size as you have. I transplanted everything last year to be rid of that terrestrial utric that took over all my beds and choked a prized N. Rafflesiana that my dear departed friend Clyde Bramblett sold to me years ago before Alzheimer's disease took him.

the fact they use more peat shouldn't be a reason why you your plants are not really growing. Plants like the extra perlite but the difference isn't that big. How long did you use the peat? was it fertilized?
@cliffowens3629
@cliffowens3629 6 жыл бұрын
This was fresh peat and no there wasn't any fertilizer incorporated in the mix. I had that happen about 12 years ago when I used a bag of peat and didn't see the " Enhanced with Miracle-Gro " at the bottom of the bag. Up til then I never had a problem using that brand of peat. At the time it was the best. Then they began to add a fertilizer to it and I missed the warning. Lost a whole lot of flytraps that year. Since then I check the bag thoroughly all around looking for that note of added stuff. It could also be that my RO unit failed and can't find a replacement as the pet shop that I go to has folded and I'm forced to use tap water that I let sit til the chlorine dissappates. Been a rough year for my babies so far. Sundews are doing ok, but my tall sarracenias are struggling.

I've had peat moss that is wet in a closed tub stored in my building for over two years. It does not have a smell or mold. I find this very interesting. Not sure if it's the ph or lack of nutrients.

Hey guys. Great videos, I really enjoy the content. I have a question Re-rock gardens: Do you have to water them at all when they're sat in a pond? Living in an equatorial region.

What is that round “weed” growing in there with the pitchers? I have that stuff taking over some of my pots. Not the grass but the conicle looking stuff

You mentioned that one can come across a sulfur smell when peat moss sits in water. My Rubbermaid container, which has no drain started smelling horribly. Is that dangerous to the plants or simply a normal nuisance?
@SarraceniaNorthwest
@SarraceniaNorthwest 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that smell is a sign of anaerobic bacteria buildup, which is unhealthy for your plants. It's best to use a container with drain holes like we have on the bathtub.

What kind of water do you use on this tub bog garden? Seems like it would be very expensive to maintain with distilled water and I know these plants do not like tap water.

I live in zone 7b out on Long Island in New York. Last year I created a mini bog planter with a few fly traps and sarracenia. For the winter I planted the pot in the ground because I was afraid of the roots freezing and the plants dying. Well that was basically a death sentence for the fly traps. Either a squirrel or a raccoon dug them all up and ate the roots (they left the traps and everything else alone). For some reason they left the sarracenia and they are fine and growing well this year. Anyway I really would like to have a nice large planter for my carnivorous plants that I keep above ground (the mini bog I currently have I took out of the ground and keep on my patio). Wildlife does not seem to bother with plants on my patio so I would love to have a nice large planter for my carnivorous plants. Do you think that this is possible considering being in zone 7? Mostly everything I see involves a bog garden being in the ground to protect the roots from the cold. I just found your channel today and I love all your videos! Any advice you have would be great!
