In my bogs and my bog garden I have a lot of plastic pots upside down on the ground of the bogs. It saves peat and you get a water reservoir. The capilarity holds the peat wet. Tradescantia varieties, pothos and aloe are my favorites. But I bought another venus fly trap last year sometime and managed to keep it alive in perlite and spaghnum moss bog but those dry out so fast. I was sure my husband had killed it by forgetting to water it when I was gone, but i trimmed it, and put it in the fridge for winter. Darn thing is still alive lol, since it's out of the fridge now have to keep it alive again lol. Peat looks alot better than spaghnum. And that rock channel is brilliant!

You can definitely repot Sarracenia at any point during the year safely. The main reason we suggest you do it in winter is that the plants are not actively growing during that time. When you repot now, you’ll see some pitchers die back and growth will slow as the plant adjusts to being repotted. That’s all totally okay! The plant will still appreciate being repotted.

If you keep this well watered, the top layer of soil will usually keep moist as well but you can top water occasionally to maintain that.

Thank you for taking the time to make this video. I love the way you designed that rock tunnel for watering. That's brilliant. My question is around creating a multi species bog and trying to make it look like it would be found in nature. Let's say I have pitcher plants, sundews and flytraps. Should I group all of the same plants together or spread them out so the layout is random? I guess they'll start to mix and mingle eventually so maybe it doesn't matter how they're planted? Maybe I should do species specific setups. :-)
@California_Carnivores2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I like to keep the shorter plants in the front or on the sides that will get the sunlight. The Sarracenia can shade out the flytraps and sundews so that’s the one thing I think about when placing them!

They don’t mind high temps as long as they have lots of water. It can get over 100 in our zone as well (last year we had one 112 day 🥵) as long as it’s not sustained for weeks on end, and they have lots of water, they’ll be okay.

@California_Carnivores Жыл бұрын
I’m so glad you enjoyed this video! I would recommend lining the barrels with plastic pond liner, peat moss is acidic and it will eat away at the wood otherwise. They can be sitting in a lot of water in the warm months as long as you don’t live somewhere both extremely humid and extremely hot like Alabama for example. If you live somewhere, that’s more temperate they don’t mind sitting in water in the hot months and it can be quite good for them. I'm struggling with learning pot sizing (height, width) and have consequently killed a couple of plants when I put them in too-big containers. Also, for smal plants this size, would you recommend a draining bog garden or a non-draining bog garden?
@California_Carnivores3 жыл бұрын
You can fit 5 or so plants into a 12” wide pot (it depends a little on the indivisible sizes of the plants) with a depth of at least 4”. Draining pots that sit in a deep saucer are often easier to care for as you do not need to monitor them as closely so I would start with that!

Some growers say this type of watering system isn't good for your plants,that it may cause root rot and a lack of oxygen simulation. What's your thoughts?
@California_Carnivores5 ай бұрын
That’s very rare and happens under specific circumstances in our experience. We’ve been growing these plants for 30 years and have talked to thousands of customers all over the United States and the world so we get a lot of data on what works and what goes wrong! Generally root rot happens only in extremely hot and humid climates like Alabama in summer. In most places this is not an issue. And the plants naturally grow in water logged, boggy soil so they’re adapted for this. We also often see people misdiagnose root rot because a lot of carnivorous plants have black or brown roots naturally and not many of them. Often the death is caused by something else and root rot is blamed. That all being said, it can happen!

Can I grow a bog in Minnesota? Like bring it in and place it under lights in the winter?
@California_Carnivores3 жыл бұрын
You can! It would be best to bring it inside to an unheated room or garage that gets light. If not you can grow it under lights but it needs to be exposed to cold so it’s best to grow it under lights set to the natural photo periods, in your garage

Why not just use a bottom-draining pot? Does it not keep up the moisture level necessary if all extra water just flows through the soil and out of the drainage hole?
@California_Carnivores3 жыл бұрын
We have another bog making video with a pot with drainage holes 😊 it can be easier, especially if you are new to carnivorous plants. Non-draining containers are quite popular though and this was a much requested video!

Are there any alternatives to peat? Could coco coir function the same?
@California_Carnivores3 жыл бұрын
Coco coir can have a very high TDS so I would not use that. We don’t currently have a great alternative to peat moss other than long fibered sphagnum moss.
