While Americs is a Youth based culture meaning marketers target the 18-35 yr old demographic for their disposable income, the knowledge required to keep the American machine running resides in the depths of the experienced and seasoned veterans. This is BY AN UNIVERSAL EXPANSE, the best tutorial on the drain lever system that I have viewed. How can you tell if it is effective? When you can remember everything that was stated when you are practically applying the knowledge. Now I will teach my son and that's how the American machine is kept running. WELL DONE.👏👏👏👍

Best video by far we've seen. Very much appreciate you take the time to show every single thing. We just put in a brand new entire bathroom. Hooked everything up and everything worked but the tub wouldn't hold water and zero instructions. So we've been watching some videos and yours is by far the best. We give you a hundred stars. Thank you and ours does not have the backing plate. And I think that we will find one that does just in case. Thanks again. 👍👍👍👍👍

Thanks for the video Bob. I wish this was available onto KZbin 10 years ago when I replaced the overflow on my tub. No locking faceplate on the overflow and here I am 10 years later doing this again because the tube coming out of the shoe came loose while snaking the line. Thankfully we have a 24 hour supply house in Brooklyn. 10 years older, and the 12 inches I had to work in 10 years ago seems to have shrunk

First of all, thanks for taking the time to produce this KZbin video. I have say that I honestly have never come across a trip lever bathtub drain in a real life situation. In my area,the water source has very high mineral content, which, as I have learned through this video,is probably the reason they're not used here very much. I am doing a bathroom reno in my own home, and in an effort to save money, I ordered an open box brass waste system online to match the existing plumbing installed when the tub was installed over 40 years ago. Unfortunately, the merchant sent me the wrong item and I received the trip lever system instead of the twist and close model that I ordered. Now that you have explained this system so thoroughly,I understand that it isn't in my best interest to install the thing. I'm sure that it's wonderful and all but the upcoming maintenance and problems that would be associated with using this hardware in a hard water in my area would be a nuisance going forward. Thanks for the heads up and I will send this item back to the seller. Cheers mate.

I currently live in a duplex and rent one side out. Our side has had various issues, and I just discovered today what these systems are called. One side has a trip lever with no plunger or spring-to-stopper system, while our side, has the lever with the spring, but there is no hardware connected where the spring ought to go, from the To to the non-existent plunger. I have a 2 year old, by the way, and your reference to the little toy soldier brought laughable tears to my eyes. Excited to see more of your videos. Thanks for sharing.

My tub hasn't been draining right for a while now. Cleaned the hair out, drain cover removed and replace properly. Still wouldn't drain very well. I was cleaning the tub after soaking some oven racks and leaned on the trip lever. WHOA, I could hear the water rushing down. I've known the problem but not the fix. UNTIL NOW! Thanks so much for the great information. Just knowing the industry name for it is a big help. The guy at the store won't look at me like I have three heads when I ask where they are now.

Hi Bob. Well I have a doozy, when I took the plate out, I discovered that the linkage was corroded and the threaded rod was broken in half. So I assume the other half is in the pipe, at the bottom. What should I do? Can't afford a plumber, so mom has to fish it out somehow.
@BobsPlumbingVideos
@BobsPlumbingVideos 2 жыл бұрын
I can usually fish it out with a wire coat hanger, Make a small hook on one end and go fishing. Be warned, sometimes the plunger is so full of soap scum and or scale it will not come out. In this case you'll have to access it from the back and remove the overflow to yank it out.

Awesome video, my problem is the lever stopper is broken off in the T pipe. It looks like I’m going to have to take off the T pipe...replace it and and replace the drain lever that fits inside. But that’s ok, bec I can see how it all functions now. This is showing me all the piping system. Now I just need to replace the pipe and drain lever. I believe I’ll have to take some tiles off the wall to expose the pipes to replace those things. Thank you, and I’m subscribing.

I've comes across the issue several times, and unless you have access from behind to break it down and remove the plunger, may be best to leave it alone (as long as the water is draining).

Thanks for the info, I'll be using this to fix my master bath drain. Do you have another video that explains how to fix a drain that has a lever and a drop down/pop up drain plug and not a screen?

I did adjusted plunger many times up AND down, but the water is still draining a little bit. Doesn't hold properly. Plunger looks good, but my plunger doesn't have o-rings. What else can be issue with drain system?

Thank you for this informative video. I made the mistake of discarding the old linkage assembly. I have no clue at what length to adjust the linkage assembly too. Are there any ways to determine this?

You can buy a universal linkage kit from H.D. or Lowes. It's basically basically just a matter of adjusting, trying , repeat until you hit the sweet spot.

Awesome explanation, Bob! Any idea how to get a stopper out of the tub if it's stuck? It just won't come out.

I've had this problem myself, try a wire hanger, create a small hook on one end and try to snag it and pull it up. I've sometimes had to saturate it with WD-40 down the overflow, let it sit for a day or two, the try and retrieve it. And then there are the ones that just won't budge, time for surgery from behind. Open the wall remove the overflow and yank it out . When done I install an access panel and if it's on an outside wall, you got a bigger problem!

Hey Bob. Great video and explanation of the assembly. This might be a dumb question, but how does the overflow work if there’s a stopper blocking the overflow pipe? Doesn’t this defeat the purpose of having an overflow? Am I missing something here?

The stopper is a hollow piece of brass that blocks the tub from draining, but still allows water from the top to pass thru.
