Without a doubt the period 1985 to 1993 was a very exciting period. Group A was tops - a key ingredient being multiple manufacturers (and classes) competing.

OMG and pit crew just lifts the wheel off... nothing holding it there other than the weight of the car... and Larry the legend drove it all the way there. Bloody amazing!

The Ford and Holden cars have a different design layout of the stud pattern. At the time the cars still had this difference in stud layout. However the Ford Mustang of Dick Johnson/Larry Perkins were using wheels manufactured for the 5 stud pattern of the Holden. The stud holes in the wheels were slotted in a manner to be fitted to the Ford.

Didn't Larry use the 5-nut wheels well intro the 90's after this?

7 years late but yep, it took til around 2000 for him to switch back to the central nut

The reason Larry Perkins changed on his own Holden Commodore race cars from using 5 lug nuts to the single locking nut was because the rules were changed. The new rules only allowed for the Single lock centre nut and the use of the 5 wheel nuts was no longer allowed

The Ford Mustang had a smaller placement engine than that of the Holden at the time. The rules stated that cars over 5000 cc's had to be a specified weight. The Ford was 4.9 litres. This was a reason that later the 308ci (5044cc) Holden engines were restroked to be 4.9 litres.

The 5 studs were the problem. At the time. They were running Holden Stud pattern wheels on the Ford pattern Mustang
