And what’s awesome is Christopher Nolan’s resume. He got a degree in English literature, yet made a short film called “Following.” That short film’s success let him direct “Memento” and “Insomnia.” He only had 3 films under his belt because his directorial approach (our concept of reality, epistemology, metaphysics) and he was granted the HONOR to create this trilogy. NOTE: I think Batman Begins, Dark Knight, and The Dark Knight Rises are all amazing FILMS. But as Batman movies, “Batman Begins” takes the cake for me.

Alexander Kings agreed. Nolan’s trilogy set the bar for adding cinematic realism to comic book movies. But his directorial and writing approach is always based on our sense of reality, epistemology, and metaphysics, yet done in an artistic way that is digestible. To this day, so many studio executives are trying to replicate this filmmaking style, which is why a lot of studio-mandated films that TRY end up failing.

The subject matter interested me...the horribly negative, disrespectful & petty tone detracted from my enjoyment of the information, guaranteeing I would watch no other offerings from that site. It was, however, a "fortuitous mistake" on my part, as it motivated me to search "behind the scenes" in Google to seek out INTERESTING and in depth pieces on the subjects that interest me. The eloquence of the various interviewees elevates this video (which is of far greater length) to something far beyond others....succinctly describing the differences between the approach to these films as opposed to that of other franchises.

I was always a huge Batman fanatic. I grew up with the animated series, the Burton films, comics and graphic novels. I beyond appreciate what Nolan did with Batman Begins. I left the cinema in awe with how much of an impact the film had on me. Not because it was an incredible Batman film, but just because it was an incredible film in general. I was always a movie buff growing up, but Nolan definitely opened my mind up to story-telling. I remember when he announced that he would release The Dark Knight in IMAX and that’s how he wanted the film to be seen. I had never payed any mind to that before, but then I began to research diligently to find a theater that would play it in 70mm IMAX film. It was the most incredible cinematic experience I’ve ever had. I walked out of the cinema saying “that’s probably my favorite movie of all time”. Saw it two more times in the days following. 10 years later I got a Heath Ledger Joker and Bale Batman tattoo because the impact the film had on me never diminished. I’ve also followed Nolan’s work non-stop and I’ve gone out my way to see all of his films on actual film projected cinemas. Thank you Mr. Nolan for this incredible trilogy and immersing us in all of the incredible worlds you’ve created!

I mean, it depends how literal you want to go with that. If you're talking about toys and whatnot, okay, but it's still very much about making money. That is the #1 operating principle of any movie studio, even WB at the time of these. So it's not like there's some broad purity with which any company can stand above another. Mind you I don't say this as a sort of criticism against WB and for these films, I'm a huge Christopher Nolan fan and loved his Batman trilogy (well the ambition more with #3 than its actual quality). It's easy to forget the massive trepidation and doubt that was surrounding the whole Marvel thing when they started. But when it proved so successful and a trajectory was established I can't really blame Disney for indulging into that anscillary market, it's not like having some toy line had the films themselves be sacrificed.

Guillermo del toro : Christopher Nolan is an "Emotional Mathematician" What a beautiful quote 🙂
@mattmanpro4 жыл бұрын
I'd say he's a narrative mathematician who knows how to use that skill to emotional effect. The thing he's mathematical about is constructing these puzzle-box narratives with all these different layers, all these philosophical ideas being wrestled with in a way that's fascinating and exciting. He knows how to layer emotional depth into that, which is what makes his films succeed. But emotion isn't the part he's being mathematical about. I'd say Marvel movies are closer to that, where they figure out how to make all the Avengers have interesting dynamics with each other while still driving the main story forward and keeping things lighthearted and funny.
@bumblebum324 жыл бұрын

@desipop36544 жыл бұрын
I think thats the main problem with his films. There's no emotional connection in his films. Honestly Iron Man 1, Spider-man 2, Logan and Joker are much better than The Dark Knight. Nolan better make character driven films like Prestige again instead of making one-dimensional character driven films with plot holes.
@mattmanpro4 жыл бұрын
When he strikes out with emotional connection he really strikes out (Tenet, anyone???) And he's clearly a filmmaker who's more interested in imagery, structure, and tone than in connecting you with a character's experience. There's always this sense that things are whizzing by and we're never just 'sitting' with any one character and really getting inside their head. But Dark Knight has incredible emotion: the Joker is a paragon of chaos, his madness and total lack of rules keeps you in so much fear. Don't tell me that film's not driven by a character, that character just isn't the protagonist!

Seriously kinda disgusting how they downplay his role just lumping him in with the other villains toward the beginning of this documentary..when you think of the dark knight it's not Batman who comes to people's minds first...love Bale but Ledgers impact is unrivaled in the Dark Knight and he had that impact in just one film.

Guillemoro del Toro has such a way with words, he's such an incredible and talented director Why wasn't Hans Zimmer mentioned at all? He had such a huge role to play with these films! Without his scores, the films seriously wouldn't have had the same effect!

I actually felt the impact of Zimmer because his score was used throughout the documentary, which communicates how vital was his contribution. Anyone who LOVES FILM knows the importance of sound/score & has certainly heard of Zimmer.

In the casting, when that actor says "Swear to me" you can tell he's not right. Compare that to Christian Bale's delivery of that line. He's like a furious monster when he says it.

@@samfisher170 I don't think it's so much about hating it, although some do. I think it's more because it's such an iconic portrayal, it makes it easy and fun to meme. It's the same situation with the voices and portrayals of Tom Hardy's Bane and Heath Ledger's Joker. Iconic. I guarantee, nobody will ever forget those voices and they will be mimicked for decades or longer.

I never heard the Del Toro quote of "Emotional Mathematics" to describe Nolan. I feel that sums up the experience of his movies so perfectly. It also encapsulates why some love his movies, and others find them cold. Some expect just emotion, others just want clinical, technically perfect films (e.g. Kubrick). Nolan blends the two, but isn't perfect at either. However, for a large number of people (including myself) it's a great blend

I studied Fine Arts, Animation, Film. Graphic Arts and other subjects including Art History and one is offered a myriad of definitions which attempt to answer the question, 'WHAT IS ART?". The definition I love most & believe to be true is "Art is that which provokes STRONG EMOTION*" This might be strongly positive (or conversely strongly negative emotion...but emotiok nonetheless. ARTISTS...in FILM, VIDEO game design, any of the Fine Arts, Animation, sound engineering, cinematography, film scoring, acting, (and all of the myriad of collaborative contributions to such FILMS), trade paperbacks, novels, directing, (etcetera) INFUSE their work with EMOTION: UNFEIGNED, genuine and authentic emotion. Such emotion injected into various projects, EVOKES in their audience STRONG EMOTION(S). If an actor FEELS NAUGHT during their performance (and is but feigning an emotion), it falls FLAT as it is but a "performance". ACTORS, DIRECTORS, and others who are authentically and genuinely passionate about their respective crafts create ART which MOVES us & resonates with TRUTH. it's a wonderful contribution to culture & the human condition. Or so I believe. BRILLIANT ARTISTIC individuals create what others in their fields CAN NOT: ART.
