Ok so honestly, this movie was kinda fun! It is a bad movie for sure but at the same time, it is so bad all the time that this can't just be an accident right. Jim Carrey was absolutely FANTASTIC as The Riddler and Tommy Lee Jones was so fun as Two Face. If you are feeling like a goofy break from the seriousness of modern day films, this is definitely a fun watch! Thanks for watching! Have a great day! :)

You may not believe it, but the creator of Batman himself, Bob Kane, said that Val Kilmer was the best portrayal of Batman he saw. As for me, I have a soft spot for this movie, mainly because of Jim Carrey. So glad he later re-did the crazy antics for the role of Doctor Robotnik in the Sonic movies.

Although Batman Returns was a financial success, Warner Bros. deemed it too dark and inappropriate for children and decided that this was the primary cause of the film's financial results and asked Burton to step down in favour of another director; Joel Schumacher. Keaton initially planned on reprising his role as Batman from the first two films, but after Burton's departure, Keaton decided not to reprise his role as Batman because he did not like the direction the series was headed in and rejected the script. 👍

This film is definitely connected to the Burton films. Aside from Alfred and Commissioner Gordon having the same actors, the gunman in the Wayne murders flashback scene has the same silhouette as Joker so that confirms that he is still their killer. Harvey Dent was already established in the 1989 movie (although, I wish that he had been in Batman Returns so that his transition into Two-Face had been more organic). Then, Bruce's "revenge has become your whole life" speech is his way of confessing how he killed Joker and Penguin while leaving Catwoman to die in a explosion. Speaking of Catwoman, she was referenced when Chase mentioned needing a skin tight vinyl and a whip. There's even a deleted scene where Two-Face calls out Batman for being a killer which further acknowledges that Joker and Penguin are still dead. Finally, when Batman tells Chase that he has no luck with women, he's referring to his failed relationships with both Vicki Vale and Catwoman.

It's not really a sequel, it's really only a parody of the Burton films. Even Rene Auberjonois' Doctor Burton at Arkham Asylum was an obvious parody of Tim Burton. They credited Tim as a producer for marquee value. Joel Schumacher admitted, "He went off to make Ed Wood and Mars Attacks!" Warner Bros. co-chairmen Bob Daly and Terry Semel didn't want Tim to make another Batman movie because of the McDonald's Batman Returns Happy Meal tie-in backlash, they wanted a lighter version of Batman they could sell McDonald's tie-in merch off of. Tim is still ranting about Batman Forever. Tim Burton ranted last year, “I was like, ‘Wait a minute. Okay. Hold on a second here. You complain about me, I’m too weird, I’m too dark, and then you put nipples on the costume? Go fuck yourself.’ Seriously. So yeah, I think that’s why I didn’t end up doing a third Batman film.” The studio turned to director Joel Schumacher for Batman Forever and Batman & Robin - two films whose dialled-up Day-Glo aesthetic and kids’ cartoon sensibilities felt a million miles away from Burton's. www.empireonline.com/movies/news/tim-burton-on-batman-forever-nipple-suit-go-f-yourself/ In Cinescope [June 1995] Joel Schumacher explained, "I wasn't asked to do the third of Tim's movies... When I was able to bring Val Kilmer in, it really gave me and the rest of the creative team an opportunity to feel that we were doing a new version instead of a sequel..." Even Bob Kane explained, "It's not really a sequel - it's a brand-new ballgame." www.1995batman.com/2018/03/magazine-article-cinescape-june-1995_30.html In Batman Forever: The Official Movie Book by Michael Singer, Joel Schumacher explained, "I think Tim Burton did a wonderful job, but I think it was incumbent upon us to give our own version of the Batman legend. Tommy Lee Jones was always my first choice for Two-Face, and I asked him very early on." And Sam Hamm explained that Joel Schumacher's Batman Forever [Val Kilmer as Batman] and Batman & Robin [George Clooney as Batman] take place in an alternate universe, Earth-97 Schumacherverse, whereas Tim Burton's Batman (1989) and Batman Returns [Michael Keaton's Batman] takes place in Earth-89 Burtonverse. www.cbr.com/batman-89-batgirl-barbara-gordon-twist/

@@StevieStitches I don't buy that Schumacher's Batman movies are parodies or set in another universe. In a way, Tim Burton had already connected his films with Schumacher's by putting in a picture of Arnold Schwarzenegger on Max Shreck's photo wall in Batman Returns. That photo foreshadowed Arnold's future role of Mr. Freeze in Batman and Robin. Also, Tim had already planned on making Riddler and Two-Face as the villains for his 3rd Batman film and he was going to cast Robin Williams as the Riddler and Billy Dee Williams would've made his return as Two-Face. Billy even stated in the DVD commentary that he wanted to play Two-Face before he was replaced by Tommy Lee Jones. Tim had already casted Marlon Wayans as Robin for Batman Returns but all of his scenes were cut out of the movie. If Schumacher wanted his films be separate from Burton's films, he shouldn't be making references to characters or events that were in the Burton films.

38:12 Re: The 'Dutch' angles... I know in the old Batman TV series from the 60's, they always shot the villains with angles like those, signifying to the audience that those guys are 'crooked' crooks. If Schumacher was using them for Batman and Robin speaking to each other, then he must have not understood their purpose.

To answer your question: yeah, this movie was basically meant to be a sequel to 'Returns', it was originally planned to have Keaton starring and Burton directing again. But 'Returns' was too dark and a lot of parents got upset, which put Warner Bros in a bad light for making such a scary film that kids wanted to see. So for the sequel, they basically decided to reboot it while still making it a sequel. Thus they got Joel Schumacher to direct and had Val Kilmer star, with the overall tone being FAR lighter and more upbeat than before, with lots of bright colours and comedy. This is why they suddenly keep bringing up his parents being killed as a central part of the plot, it was in Burton's original script, but they amped it up in rewrites because they were kinda-sorta-maybe treating this as 'film #1' of a whole new series. Same applies to Bruce claiming he's never been in love before, while Chase Meridian openly references Catwoman with the 'skintight vinyl and a whip' line. Personally, while the movie isn't great, I still have a blast with it. I think it gets more hate than it deserves and there's a lot of great moments people gloss over. It's not one I'll defend to the death, but I do think it's worth watching at least once. To quote another KZbinr: 'this is the worst movie that I've seen 40 times.'

Since this is Robin's origin story, and the first time both of them work together in this universe, this movie should have been the one with the title "Batman & Robin". In fact, the scene where Batman beats Riddler and tells him "I'm both Bruce Wayne and Batman. Not because I have to be, now. But because I choose to be." The original script, he was supposed to say "Because I choose to be Batman, forever."

My favorite part is when Two Face & Riddler come trick or treating, then Albert's supposed to be knocked out on the floor but still shoves his sterling tray out of the way for the bad guys to enter. A blooper, but hilarious! The Dutch angles are referencing the campy 1960s TV show, where cameras were tilted (especially in villains' lairs) in every episode. As for the bright colors and flashy sets, director Joel Schumacher started out as a department store window dresser (create your own punchline). I love this silly movie -- and your reaction!

If it wasn't for Michael Gough reprising his role as Alfred these two films would honestly share nothing with the two Tim Burton ones, to the point where you could consider them a reboot. Back then there was some controversy over whether Batman should be grime and gritty and such a franchise could sell toys to kids - McDonald's came under some fire for selling Batman themed happy meals for Batman Returns and allegedly encouraging children to see a violent/sexual movie. And that's basically why these second two films look like giant toy ads.

Fun fact, Ollie.... using the green lighting makes you look like 2-Face. Also: For Val Kilmer movies, I have to recommend the movie "Real Genius". He was comedic GOLD in that movie! Very under-rated! Also, also: Hangovers are for lightweights. ;) Oh, from what I've heard, Keaten left the project when the studio decided to hire Shumacher as director. Keaton wanted them to stay with Burton directing, so he left in protest.

Rightfully so. I don’t blame him for leaving. We missed out on having an awesome third movie with Burton directing, Keaton as Batman, and the original actor from the first movie as Harvey/Two-Face. We were already introduced to him in the first movie so it would have been perfect. What a tragic loss for us all. 🥺😢

Of all the old Burton / Schumacher movies, I like this the most. It doesn’t bother me that he doesn’t follow the visual world and mood of the first two films. It has its own style and atmosphere. The actors are brilliant, the visuals are fantastic, as is Elliot Goldenthal’s music. The truth is, this movie is cool to hate, while Burton’s movies are cool to love, even though Batman Forever is better than its predecessors in many ways.

Yes, this was originally supposed to be directed by Burton. However, he backed out due to artistic conflicts with the studio. He kept getting pressure about issues like The Penguin’s look not being sellable for merchandise, etc. They kept fighting him over his ideas for this film as well. My guess is Two Face would have been much more gruesome looking. Keaton walked with Burton since he didn’t want to play the role with any other director. With different writers and Joel Schumacher trying to figure out how to create a similar vibe to Burton, this movie never held up. The 4th is just a disappointment.

I'd also like to add that even prior to his death, Schumacher apologized for how the two Batman films turned out. It was never his intention to do so, since the studio was more about money and other things instead of the source material, which would become apparent in the next film.

There was a ton of out rage over batman returns to burton was pulled befor produvtion was made.funfact this movie is missing close to an hour of plot, and this version is misedited due to warner bros wanting the action scene at the begining rather than a build up it was suposed to open with harvey escaping arkham, the drive thru scene was added later. Supposedly there is a full cut at the wb as said by one of the screen writers that is less goofy with alot of plots and scenes missing. Also wb gave a lot less freedom on the edits even two faces costume was changed, all the early protography showed a darker tone to his costume. Also tommy lee jones and jim carrey didnt get along at all, carry did an interview where he asid when the met on set jones said he f***ing hated him and he couldnt "sanction his buffoonery". I think is was his ego because jones had just won an oscar for the fugitive.

This is pure nostalgia for me and every kid who grew up in the mid 90s. Broke then box office opening weekend record. Batman has distinction of doing that 3 different times! (Batman 89', Batman Forever in 1995, and The Dark Knight in 2008) It's campy for sure, but I still have a special place in my batheart for this movie. Val Kilmer's Batman voice and compassionate Bruce Wayne nabs him a seat at the table for the best depictions of live action Batmen. It's too bad he's seen as the Lazenby for Batman on films. With a better script, there's no doubt his talent would've served a serious take on the caped crusader.

Tim Burton had nothing really to do with the making of this film. Warner Bros. was not happy with the dark and sexual imagery of Batman Returns, so they decided to go ahead in a new direction without him in this film, though they gave him an executive producer credit out of courtesy. This film takes place within the same continuity as the first two films, but they couldn't be more different. The story was going to be very different under Burton.

the next and last movie from this era is "Batman and Robin" Batman Beyond was an animated series, which you could check out. The series did one animated film "Return of the Joker" other good animated Batman films include batman: mask of the phantasm , Batman & Mr. Freeze: SubZero, and Batman: Mystery of the Batwoman which are in canon to Batman the Animated series Batman and Harley Quinn and Justice League vs. the Fatal Five are also said to be in this canon The Batman vs. Dracula is in canon to a 2nd tv series "The Batman" Batman's 3rd animated series has the movie "Scooby-Doo! & Batman: The Brave and the Bold" which is not the only time the two have teamed up Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders and Batman vs. Two-Face are kin canon to Batman 66 Legends of the Superheroes is also part of that era. Batman: Gotham Knight is in canon with the Batman Begins universe Batman vs. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles isn';t in canon to any series for either team then DC animated films did a ton of content with multiple canons starting with Superman: Doomsday and Superman/Batman: Public Enemies in this era there are many non-canon stories like Justice League: The New Frontier so it takes some research to get it all sorted out. JLA Adventures: Trapped in Time is a bit of a tribute to the Super fiends TV series while not being part of it Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox triggers the New 52 canons followed by Justice League: War and Son of Batman The Death of Superman was a remake of Superman Doomsday and I believe resets the time line again but a lot of Batman content is made of stand alone stories of varying tones like Year One, Killing Joke and Long Halloween The Batman Superman Movie: World's Finest is a movie made out of combining episodes of the series as is Batman Beyond: The Movie and Justice League: Secret Origins. All just the two part episodes on one DVD Batman Unlimited is 3 animated films with a more kid-friendly tone DC Super Hero Girls: Super Hero High had two different canons but shows a lighter side to the DCU and while Lego Batman is a great movie (you need to see all the other ones to get the references) there are multipole Lego films starting with Lego Batman: The Movie - DC Super Heroes Unite and 12 total in the Lego line there is also Batman 1943 and Batman and Robin 1949 which were made in a low budget era when WWII was still going on so we get to see some anti-Japan propaganda the cw crisis episodes also make for fun stories when viewed back to back as if movies other Batman animated shows did not have moves as far as I can tell. Though he may appear in other things where he is not the main focus. as for this movie's story there are lots of alternate ideas you can learn more about films from Minty Comedic Arts 'fanscription What If Tim Burton Directed Batman Forever? and while its not batman related I will also shout out the movies that made us The Death of "Superman Lives": What Happened? Basically what happened was Batman Returns was "Too violent for kids" so they made a more kid friendly version Watch Batman 66 and see what you like better this or that also Batman TAS "Robin's Reconning" and Batman TAS "Two-Face"

It was intended to be a third Tim Burton Film or more accurately Tim Burton had a rough idea of what a third Batman Film in his universe might look like but WB never really seriously sought Tim Burton to make a third film outside of name recognition.(He wanted Damon Wayans to play Robin, Billy Dee Williams would have come back as Two-Face,Michael Keaton would have come back and a lot of the themes of family and overcoming grief were already there) ,he was thinking of calling it "Batman Continues" but unfortunately when "Batman Returns" came out there was parent outrage over the "dark, morally confusing, unfamily friendly" themes of the Film, one child critic describing it as "A total attack on kids" and the studio lost a lot of merchandising deals with toy and fast food companies due to the backlash so with the next two films they got Joel Schumacher to direct and went with a more family-friendly, merchandisable tone. And they gave Burton an executive producer credit which basically meant "Here`s your residuals, now shut up and let us make the movie we wanna make for our shareholders,um I mean the fans and the good people of America."

I watch Batman for the villains not for Batman himself so I don’t care much who is playing Batman, the same as Spider-Man, as the villains are the best part of the comics including Original Marvel Comics, so the newer Batman movies are boring to me as they don’t really have that good of villains in them or it takes 3 movies to establish a character who is going to be a villain (which real DC Comic fans already know who they are as soon as they appear) and then we get a reboot and it starts all over again.

If you familiarize yourself with the old Batman shows from the 60s, you’ll better understand the traditional comic book style in which these movies were made and why/how the “unnecessary” things in them, are actually necessary (the costumes, hair, lighting, music, dialogue, camera angles etc.) The reason they’re deemed ‘bad movies’ is because unfortunately, being imaginative is difficult for many, and also many younger viewers didn’t grow up watching the old shows and reading the comics. For them, things need to be realistic and plausible...things need to be ‘necessary’ and make sense. These older movies are intended to be camp and over the top because they’re a fantasy. They’re comic books come to life💜

The problem is that they tried to connect them to Burton’s films. These should have been their own universe. After Keaton’s Batman films this just seems extra corny and childish. I like them but I understand why some people don’t.

The reason this movie is so goofy in comparison to the last one is because basically the Penguin's inappropriateness. I mean, yeah, Catwoman was inappropriate, too, but she didn't come off as a sexual predator like the Penguin did, especially to those two women at his campaign for mayor party. So, instead, they went back to the 1960s TV show Batman format of being goofy and family friendly. Yeah, it's campy and silly, but at least we don't have to answer uncomfortable questions about why the the Penguin man is being so weird to girls. That's some pretty dark territory to be discussing with kids.

This is what happens when the studios jump on what’s popular. The animated series became a big thing and brought back the extra characters from the 60’s. The noisy people wanted more comic like movies, just like how this crowd wants darker movies. The next Bat movie will only be lit by lightning.

Great reaction! I really didn't like this movie, even though it has some pleasant moments and shots. But this was a real disappointment when I saw it in theaters. This was supposed to be a continuation of the Tim Burton films. He produced the film. But they wanted to shift to a more kid-friendly movie after how dark and disturbing (because of the Penguin) Batman Returns was.

Oh No; They Didn't! In a knew fact; the Tommy Lee Jones hated Jim Carrey, and tried to One Up him on ever scene that had. One of the reason why Two-Face isn't as much of Two-Face as other media would have him be. Carrey actually came on live TV, and stated how Jones told him he hated the man. This was not a fun set to be on. Also; for someone who's not a fan of Jim Carrey, this movie is Painful to watch. Jack Nicholson, Danny DeVito), Michelle Pfeiffer, Hell, even Uma Thurman were their characters. Jim Carrey is just Jim Carrey. Same for Schwarzenegger. They were not their characters; they were just playing themselves, and it shows. Jones on the other hand; was also Jim Carrey, which is why his performance is do bad.
