I think that concept would have worked well for Nolan's realistic tone but still would have stayed true to the Riddler's character as a mad genius obsessed with puzzles.

Actually, it WAS made for kids. Burton wanted to make one last Batman movie, but the WB people said "NO." because they wanted it to be for kids, but Burton liked making it an adult movie. So, yeah.

Well I think it's pretty safe to say that they shot themselves in the foot by making it for kids. At least Burton making it a bit more adult had a broader audience in the seats. Whereas Shumacher narrowed it down to just children.

i re-watched this movie and i really enjoyed it. i think the thing that throws people off is the change in tone. if the franchise began like this, then i think people would be alright with it. its like we went from frank miller to denny o'neil. the tone change is awkward but for the most part, this movie is pretty good. my favorite third favorite out of all the batman movies

I dunno about you, but Jim Carrey is the only reason I kept my eyes open and enjoyed the movie. I think he was working on Ace Ventura 2 when he did this movie, so, yeah, it's as if Ace Ventura snuck into the cast of Batman Forever and did what he could do. You could tell he had fun with the role.

Originally Robin Williams was slated to play the Riddler and Billy Dee Williams was contracted to play Two Face. Williams was supposed to play the dark methodical Riddler. However when he read the script he hated the change in direction. Apparently he blanket refused to play it slapstick. Further, the story of the Riddler in this movie, is the Mad Hatter origin story. From an episode of BTA and possibly the comics.

Um, sir, I don't think Tim Burton handed the project to Joel Shumaker just like that. I read that he was kicked off the project as director and put on as a producer. Many parents complained that Batman Returns was too dark and violent. And thus, this is why Michael Keaton didn't stay on the project.

I haven't seen Batman Returns in years, but I have seen the Superhero Rewind review for it & the Film Brain/Bennet the Sage review & all I remember it being from my initial viewing is a freakshow, with Penguin being a fucking disgusting mutant fuck. Personally I hate this movie more than I hate B&R. Why? Because this movie came out first. To explain: When a film changes directors obviously you can expect changes in the style in which a movie is made. The problem is though Shumacher's changes were a bit too drastic all at once. Now when you see the movies in order knowing that the director's change you expect it to be a bit different but still maintain a certain atmosphere so it doesn't feel too different. When you keep the same director the style doesn't change at all. So when I saw B&R I pretty much expected more of the same regarding the tone of the movies.

I don't know if it's been mentioned already, but if you're into fanedits, find the "Red Book" edition. The visuals are still garish, but the colors have been dimmed, some of the music replaced and key-scenes about Bruce's character development have been restored. It balances out and makes for a fairly decent Batman flick.

I got to say I enjoyed Batman Forever. I loved Jim Carrey's Riddler, he's one of the reasons I got into acting. Tommy Lee Jones didn't need to be there as Two Face but he brought great diversity to the role. To this day I feel that Val Kilmer is the most underrated batman. He played Bruce Wayne and the caped crusader as two different characters, which is how I would play him. And Joel Schumacher's colorful neon esque Gotham is fun, but maybe for this movie alone. It got old really fast in Batman & Robin. And I actually dug The Riddler's costumes. Granted I wouldn't wear that jumpsuit to save my life, but when I think of the riddler, Jim Carrey's flamboyant lunatic is the one I see. You can blame the fact that I never payed the shows much thought, or that my comic book knowledge is null at best and my love for these characters, whether marvel or dc, comes mainly from the movies. But I enjoyed Batman Forever for the hokey mess that it is. My Rating: Good time, no alcohol required. At least when compared to the dogshit that is Batman & Robin it's arguably a classic.

I loved Batman Forever when I was a kid. I remember when I first saw it it was my favorite Batman movie. Of course when you're little you don't notice things like bat nipples. As I got older I began to see how cheesy and over the top it was. I don't hate it, but I don't like it all that much either. I did like the inclusion of Robin though. It is a little ridiculous for Bruce to take him in when he's clearly in his 20's or older. At the end of the day I like the movie more for nostalgia than anything else.

See, when I first saw this movie I was about 13, I guess, and I thought 'not bad' - the opening joke with the drive, and everything seemed acceptable to me - at that time. The thing I noticed even then, and was annoyed with later, was bringing those weird colors everywhere (I mean - neons, everywhere). I only now realised, why was that - they tried to merge Burton's vision with 60ies Batman show - which explains the colors, music, bringing Robin with the phrase 'holey rusted metal', Batman looking into the windows while climbing up, the emergency suiting up scene - these were all references. But there was no way of putting it together with Burton succesfully. The film has several ideas, that appear later in Nolan's version - scene of the funeral and finding Batcave. And few elements were quite good - for the first time in history Bruce's adventures were more interesting than Batman's, the relation between Bruce and Dick was nicely shown. And the mind control scheme - ridiculously executed, but interesting as a plot device. Main theme was good, Seal's song also helps. Nicole Kidman - wonderful as always. So, despite bad plot, neons, holey plot (sic!) - it could have been worse. And it was - a movie later :) Love your review!

Batman forever was ok. Its much better than all the shitty movies like toy story, Power Rangers & those goofy Disney movies. Plus it's a childrens movie so what do you expect. My favorites will always be the first Batman with jack as the joker & dark knight rises because that was a more realistic version of Bane. Because in batman & robin he was an insane idiot. & I feel in a realistic adult movie world & not a childrens movie world Jim Carrey as Riddler & Arnold as Freeze could have been just as great as Bane/dark knight rises & both jokers if done right back in the day, but being young as I was back then I felt batman forever was a good fun ride.

The only good thing about batman forever for me was the following: 1. visuals of the intro i liked the green "Forever" with the bat logo, it was cool in that you know Riddler's colour is green and all. 2. Production shots, it was okay, camera work. 3. Bat plane looked okay. Stuff I didn't like 1. All of the above which jeremyjahns said; 2. GOtham city looking like a weird Retro-colourful Club-House.

I don’t see how you think Two-Face is the main villain. Sure he starts out as the main antagonist but once Riddler arrives he definitely becomes the secondary villain. Two-Face’s only goal is to kill Batman but has failed despite numerous encounters. Meanwhile Riddler puts the box in every home stealing Gothams intelligence, finds out Bruce Wayne is Batman which results in them attacking Wayne major, then it ends on Riddler’s question mark ridden island where he’s found sitting on a throne with Two Face standing next to it. By this point Two Face is kind of a crony as the villains’ entire plot was constructed and implemented by The Riddler. I mean The Riddler not only discovered Batman’s secret identity but as Edward Nygma fooled Gotham into putting his product in every home thus creating a business empire. He was also not only the villain to Batman but to Bruce Wayne as well. Edward stalked Bruce, left him riddles and built his empire out of spite for Bruce Wayne while “The Riddler” terrorized Gotham with hate for Batman. Lastly (I know I’ve completely over analyzed this), this movie starts with Edward working at Wayne Enterprises, his work being rejected, his clear obsession with Bruce, creating his name/persona, finding his costume, meeting Two Face and then becomes Gotham’s biggest threat. We’re shown all of this because this movie is just as much a Riddler origin story as it is a Batman story. Two Faces entire backstory is told with a few lines in a news story on tv. As I said I’ve definitely over analyzed this but I had to make my case for why I disagree.

This is easily the best live action Batman movie ever made. Burton and Nolan only care about their own person filming style to care about Batman. Schumacher was actually a fan of Batman and worked along side Bob Kane. Also, the campiness of his movies are more of Warner Brother's fault than his own, since they were trying to avoid the creation of another Batman Returns.

I disagree. I thought that the Schumacher films were the worst between him, Burton and Nolan. The villains in this film were so over the top it was rediculous. Why was seeing a bat in Wayne's head mean they know beyond a shadow of a doubt he was Batman? What if Wayne just had some bad dream with a bat in it, or he was upset the there was a bat caught in his house and he had to get animal control to get rid of it? After thinking that Batman and Robin were both dead how did Two-Face and Riddler know the they were going to be attacked, or the route by which they were going to be attacked?

rangers94ism I can see why people hate and like the other Batman movies... but I can't fathom why people like Batman Returns. I like Batman Forever because it has the best representation of Bruce Wayne being psychologically tortured. He thinks he's the reason his parents are dead. Its not like Nolan's where "oh if I didn't make them leave the theater, or if I fought back." Its was pretty powerful... even if the best version was cut. It also shows Batman as seeing his enemies as victims. The first line he says the the main villain is "you need help, Harvey" and he almost never calls him Two-Face. Plus, Riddler and Two-Face never thought they outright killed Batman. The only time they did, they quickly found out Batman survived and that was when Two-Face buried him alive. And Riddler never even wanted to kill Batman "if you kill him, he won't learn nothing."

One awesome thing in this movie - the scene with the flying bat in the sequence when Riddler reads Bruce Wayne's thoughts. But in the movie it was like 10 seconds? So 10 seconds of awesomeness in 2 hour film. Oh, and "Hold me, thrill me, kiss me, kill me" song by U2 with the bat scene in the video. The music video is much better than the film.

A lot of the deleted scenes can be found on KZbin. They don’t radically alter the film but they do make Two-Face more menacing and add psychological depth to Bruce Wayne. I don’t think it requires a complete change but adding those scenes and maybe some minor color and sfx alterations would keep the fun, 90s feel while adding some edge.

In the movie with Christopher Nolan Leonardo DiCaprio was supposed to play The Riddler and he's a phenomenal actor. I could see him being the Riddler he's a fantastic actor.

The (mostly) cut storyline that you mentioned is in fact the opposite of what you thought. Bruce remembers wanting to go to the movie's and 'making' his parents take him. That's all there so he feels guilty. The repressed memory is that it was his parent's own fault as THEY chose the movie and told Bruce his movie would have to wait until the week later. It would have been awesome, if they'd gotten the giant bat to look half decent.
