La-la-la-la
La-la-la-la
La-la-la-la
born to multiply
Born to gaze into night skies
All you want's one more Saturday
Well, look here until then
They're gonna buy your life's time
So keep your wick in the air, and your feet in the fetters 'til the day
We come in doing cartwheels
We are caught up by ourselves
And your shape on the dance floor
Will have me thinking such filth and gouge my eyes
You'll be damned to be one of us, girl
Faced with the dodo's conundrum
I felt like I could just fly
But nothing happened every time I tried
Woo, ooh
A duotone on the wall
Selfless fool who hoped he'd save us all
Never dreamt of such sterile hands
You keep 'em folded in your lap
And raise them up to beg for scraps
You know he's holding you down with the tips of his fingers, just the same
Will you be pulled from the ocean
But just a minute too late
Or changed by a potion
And find a handsome young mate for you to love
You'll be damned to pining through the windowpanes
You know you'd trade your life for any ordinary Joe
Well, do it now or grow old
Your nightmares only need a year or two to unfold
Been alone since you were 21
You haven't laughed since January
You try and make like this so much fun
But we know it to be quite contrary
La-la-la-la-la-la-la
Dare to be one of us, girl
Faced with the androids conundrum
I felt like I should just cry
But nothing happens every time I take one on the chin
You're Himmler in your coat, you don't know how long I have been
Watching the lantern dim
Starved of oxygen
So give me your hand, and let's jump out the window

To me this is just like how Batman has this lone wolf reputation. When in actuality most good comics stress how much of a support system he’s always had. Whether it be Alfred, Robin, Leslie Tompkins, Catwoman, the rest of the Batfamily or so many others. Batman may brood on rooftops alone, but he couldn’t do what he does without all the amazing support he gets. Thinking of Batman as a lone wolf is just completely misunderstanding the character.

@@tutumazibuko2510 Ehh.... If Superman exists hes not going to win over And over again, it would be a boring story. And not only that, but if u are someone like Batman, Wonder Woman or Superman then u wont win every fight, for example, Bane has broken Batmans back yet he came back with a badass story, doomsday has killed superman And yet supes was ressurected And came back, Wonder Woman has been defeated by villains such as Ares Cheetah And more And yet she stands up to back herself up. A great quote from Alfred from Batman begins says it the Best: "why do we fall sir? To learn how to pick ourselves up." And im not saying that Batman should win every fight cuz hes not a god after all, thats why i never liked Batman beating darkseid for example. But Even if Batman has been broken by Bane, Diana has been defeated by Ares, or Superman that has been killed by doomsday, they still can get up And fight for the Best of the world they live in. No matter who u loose against, even a human walking amongst gods can defeat them with a enough good plan that would work on them IF they would go Rouge. Batman has even a plan against himself if he would go too far, thats something that shouldnt be underestimated. Batman is a character that gets a Lot of hate nowadays, hes getting the hate for the same reason for example dr doom is getting praised, its Just a huge hypocricy in some people (not talking about you or anyone in this comments section Just saying overall). But in the end, Its The internet, 90% of People are toxic And are also haters (which again not talking about u And not talking about anyone on this comments section), And i hope that will change into a positive percentage rather then more bad, thats all i wanted to say about that.

I think an important part of the story is that both parties end up going to the extreme, Batman obviously by using personal information to make weapons against his friends, but also on how the league is completely unable to see past the incident and the posible utility of the countermeasures, like, there's this moment where Kyle mentions how, in spite of the breach in trust, the plans may have been useful against Hal Jordan when he became Parallax, but Flash runs up to him and tells him that "he has no right to speak of that".

Might I take a moment to highlight the first arc of Chip Zdarsky’s recent run on Batman, which asks the question, “We know that Batman has contingency plans for basically all of the Justice League members…but does he have one for himself?” It’s a genuinely thrilling and fascinating deconstruction of how Batman’s obsessive paranoia is his own greatest weakness that just destroys and alienates everyone else around him while also reaffirming that his true greatest strength comes from his humanity and his compassion for his friends and family. And it also has Batman surviving a fall from orbit like in Mission Impossible 6, so that’s pretty cool.

That's still a big achievement. 30 minutes would be enough for a villain to kill the league so I wouldn't say the plans failed. The movie dumbs the League down and their excuse is "Well you see, Savage modified the plans so that they would kill, not just incapacitate and that's why the League couldn't get out." Edit: Also guess which version the general audience is more familiar with? The comic or the movie? That's right. The entire movie revolves around the idea that Batman’s plans can pick off the Justice league one by one, which is exactly how an evil Batman would act, leaving the league incapable of acting as an effective check against him. Furthermore, the only reason the league were able to counteract Vandal’s plans were because they had to come up with their own plan for Batman that was imperfect, thus allowing Batman to beat each of his own plans. Especially in the movie, a good portion of the League don't get out out the binds the Legion of Doom put them in on their own, they get out of them because of Batman's help. Help they wouldn't be receiving if it was Bruce himself doing it to them. In the "Bruce has gone evil and the League have to stop him" timeline, Bruce turns evil, deploys his contingencies, and the League all die. The events of the story demonstrate perfectly that Bruce's contingency plans, in the hands of a villain, are highly likely to result in the death of the League. And if that villain _is_ Bruce... then they're right fecked, aren't they? That and I've never been fond of the Batgod Wank that results from the Batfans insisting that making secret plans to murder all of your friends is smart and cool and healthy.

He'd know how to beat his own plan. On top of that if only one member at a time had been harmed then anyone could have stopped them easily. The problem was that Vandal (wisely) attacked everyone at once. Hell if Bane had actually just killed Bruce when he had the chance Batman couldn't have helped anyone. Any of the villians could have come up with those plans if they really tried they were simple well known weaknesses that most if not all of villians could have already known. While I adore the DCAU and everything with roots in the Timmverse, one of the aspects that's come from it that I really don't care for is the "arrogant Bat-God" version of Batman. It's not from Batman TAS, he was always very human in that show, but Justice League requiring him to perform more outrageous feats on a regular basis as well as much less time to spend specifically with any one character due to juggling so many protagonists at any one time made him into this arrogant god that, while there's obviously an appeal there as many people like this version of batman a lot, he's really missing a lot of the "oomph" from the comics and even earlier DCAU materials. It's not a black mark on the series or anything, but maybe we could've had at least one episode touching a little more on Batman's psychology during the JL/Unlimited episode set just as a reminder to people... not that they never did it, revisiting it via things like these video essays have pointed out lots of little subtle humanizing moments he had during Justice League episodes, just could've maybe used one focus episode possibly.

There's another thing people overlook from this. They get excited with the idea that Batman can solo the League. These were contingency plans for if the League turned evil and they would work precisely once. All of hinged on the fact that none of them would likely think of of Batman as a potential threat if they suddenly turned evil. Now the very first act any of them would do under this circumstance is kill Batman before he realizes anything is amiss and can try anything. The whole Bat family is probably insta dead the moment Supes or Flash has a magical alignment shift. These were absolute worst case scenario plans that can no longer stop the worst case scenario because Raj used them first. It would have been interesting if they had explored that at least in an elsworlds.

Batman does his friends wrong, calls them a bunch of morons, they kick him out and all is well? No! The team should be way more broken up about how one of their own essentially backstabbed them." There's also the fact that the film doesn't establish why Batman came up with the contingencies other than "he saw the threats that a mind-controlled Justice League could pose in advance". Not to mention, none of the League has any genuine arguments against Batman, as shown by your Wonder Woman example. Tower of Babel solves all of these problems. Batman explains to Superman that he created the contingencies due to a prior body-swapping incident, not because he anticipated the future. The League is not helpless and can actually get back on their feet without Batman's help. Wonder Woman's argument makes the most sense, and the team is fractured in half DUE to Batman's actions. Batman actually has to get the League's trust back. He doesn't walk out of there like some sort of badass. Sidenote: I know DC would most likely never do it, since Batman is their golden goose, but I would like to see an Elseworld story where the events of Justice League Doom happen, but Batman is 10 minutes late in breaking out of the coffin. As a result, the entire League is dead and it's all Batman's fault. How would he cope knowing that his paranoia and lack of trust resulted in his friends and Earth's sole defence team dying?

My problem with Doom has always been that Batman's plans are completely idiotic. Let's take Superman for example. Batman's "plan" was either to just shoot Clark with a Kryptonite bullet, something that is both easier said than done and also makes the villains complete idiots for not thinking of it themselves, or to lure Superman out with the whole setpiece with the suicidal man and catching him off guard. The problem with this is that for it to work Superman needs to be a good guy. Meaning it can't be used a contingency. The same is true for every other JL member (except maybr Diana). They're all either "use their weakness on them" which, again, is easier said than done, or "exploit their heroism" which wouldn't work.

If Savage really only took the "Kryptonite bullet" part of Batman's contingency and made an entirely new plan around it, then, uh, what was the point of stealing the contingecies? Even if you argue their weaknesses aren't public knowledge in this story, he has brought in a bunch of each superhero's villains for this exact purpose. I think Ma'alefa'ac would be aware of the fact Martians are weak to fire. And I don't really buy the whole "Savage changed them" thing either. They attack the heroes in ways way too personal for Vandal to think of on his own. Clark is attacked on the top of the Daily Planet. J'onn is tricked by his feelings of isolation, while in his civilian identity. Hal sees freaking Carol, his ex girlfriend, die. Personally I'm not the biggest fan o batman he's just become so over saturated and the focus on him as a hero has kinda diluted him as a human. But one idea I had for him if I was writing DC comics is that Batman makes sure the other league members know that he has a plan for each of them and suggests they do the same at least for him. And if they say they will not he gives them a contingency for himself. A small signal device not unlike Jimmy Olson's watch, when pressed it will send a prerecorded message to one of his side kicks telling them that the worst has happened and Batman has gone rouge and must be stopped. Batman is paranoid to the extrema, but the first contingency plan he created was for himself. I also like to think that superman helped Batman with his own contingency giving him the most potent piece of Kryptonite he could find, from the very core of Krypton. Because he'd rather have it in the hands of his best friend than his worst enemy. Batman asks what will you do if I go rouge? You just gave me the ultimate weapon against you. Superman replies that I may not be able to stop you now, but Clark Kent might. "A full expose on the true identity of the Batman, to be released on a dead man trigger?" Batman askes "It's written, but it won't be released. Because if something where to happen to me, the the world will need you more than ever." Superman replies. And that's what surprises Batman, to know that after all of his paranoia and dangerous contingencies some one still trusts him.

I never understood why people defend the whole contingency thing. Of course it makes sense to have plans in case someone goes rogue, but it makes no sense at all for all of this information to be accessible to only one person. When Batman says "what if the justice league was mind controlled or turned evil" he doesnt imagine himself being part of it, in his eyes it would always be him versus the league. But what if it was someone like Green Lantern vs a mind controlled league that includes Batman? Hal would be fucked. The tower of babel story works to show Bruce being paranoid, but people decided to instead view it has him being logical and realistic, when in reality the "logical" thing to do would be to lay these contingencies out across the board, where every leaguer knows eachothers weaknesses. That way everyone would be prepared to deal with anyone who goes rogue.

He'd be admitting that his own paranoia, his mistrust in others, was wholly his own mistake and that he shouldn't have seen his friends as anything less than what they were.

Ill say what i said before about the situation in Justice League Doom: I still believe Cyborg represents a great opportunity to be a contrasting duality against Vandal Savage, with one representing the future and the other representing the past.

Of course Wonder Woman is the main voice of reason. Diana literally did what Bruce does in Tower of Babel in JLA: A League of One and yet it’s clear throughout the latter that it pained her a lot to be doing what she does to the team. On top of that she wasn’t actually attempting to put them out of commission long term and I wish we could have seen that same nuance in Babel/the movie. Diana points out that what really matters is that although Batman may be a jerk, he’s also being a bad FRIEND which is much more important when fighting amongst a team. Why couldn’t they have a discussion about how Batman may have a support system to keep him from going completely nuts, but that that doesn’t mean he actually has the capacity to make friends? Both Clark and Diana in particular are clearly special to him; he respects them deeply for calling him out when the need arises and lowering themselves to his level in an effort to understand him. He’s shown his own form of affection for the league members in his own way like attempting to teach Clark how to fight in hand-to-hand combat in order for him to become an even better superhero when up against the likes of villains like Diana who are the entire package. Batman has become the ultimate edgy Gary-Stu and I for one am tired of it. 🙄

I always took the Tower of Babel as Batman simply not trusting anyone except for himself. The Justice League are less "friends" and more as assets that can help Batman with the mission but assets that must always have a leash that he can pull on. Like the Injustice film showed. The first time Batman ever met Cyborg he planted a virus on him to trigger the moment he stepped out of line. He can't trust anyone because no one else is him. Like Owlman said in Crisis on Two Earths that Batman only trusted himself to take down Owlman even though Superman probably would have been able to do it because he only trusts himself... Just like Owlman.

@@halfmettlealchemist8076 That's the sad thing. He brings these kids into this world because he truly thinks that's what they need to get over their trauma. Bruce Wayne wasn't able to get over the deaths of his parents. He could only cope in the world by becoming Batman, by becoming an instrument of vengence and warped justice. So he makes these kids like him and because they are like him he is able to trust them more that he does anyone else outside of Alfred who is the person Batman trusts more than anyone.

Tower of Babel is a story of Batman learning to trust but that doesn't mean he shouldn't face consequences for his dishonesty should be punished. That is a thing that's the core element of the story, despite being the greatest detective in the world he doesn't realize anything until it's too late. The serious lack of dialogue in Doom is bizzarre. Batman should be shown as a paranoid asshole learning to trust. Instead of a perfect character. Batman's social awkwardness is not focused on enough. Batman should be confronted by his socially illiterate actions. Batman doesn't get punished for his mistakes enough, rather of others.

I imagine JLU Hawkgirl could be taken out in a similar manner to JL Doom Wonder woman, she was always the most aggressive fighter of the league, otherwise disarming her of her mace and pinning her wings hinders her. I dont think JLU Batman would be willing pull a tower of babel, we saw in Starcrossed when he revealed Flash's identity, he reciprocated with his own. He does have a level of paranoia and preparedness as shown when he pulled kryptonite out of his belt for AMAZO, but it seemed like a more generalised "tool for every occasion" kind of preparedness rather than detailed plans.

I empathize with Batman's choice to leave the League in Doom. Logically, his preemptive departure from the team means he wasn't ever voted out. This is a form of social manipulation in which you intentionally waive your right to self-representation to avoid further arguments and unproductive discussion. Essentially, his seat in the League wasn't worth the strain. If people want him gone, it's better to satisfy them immediately than to allow a vote. When people make a decision, they're less likely to change their mind than if they only _considered_ making a decision. If there was future discussion of him rejoining the League, he's more likely to be accepted again if no one officially voted against him.

This is the issue with short film adaptations of longer form comics. The Tower of Babel could have been adopted in a limited film series. But I’m not sure that was McDuffie’s image of this adaptation when he wrote it. In later adaptations, we see a Batman who tries to prevent others from being him.

Let be honest, Batman was never a mentally sand person. He admits that himself. He says that Nightwing is a better person than him. Hell, he admits Superman is a better hero then him. It is funny how Batman can make Contingency plans for the League but not for a special someone that once for reality warping powers, cripple his friend's daughter, and kill his second son. But hey you expect someone who dressed like a bat, be in the cave all of the time, and have children fight along with him to be a normal person. Why you think in the DCAU, Batman ends up alone?
