I loved watching Kirk Langstrom and his wife being part of the witnesses at Bruce's wedding. It's pretty wholesone to see a reformed Batman villain attending the wedding of his former enemy. Speaking of that, it would have been pretty cool if they also had shown Arnold Wesker at the ceremony.

A rather notable aspect of the Chemistry episode is the Bat-Family members' reaction to Bruce's retirement and marriage. While Nightwing strongly believes that such a marriage will fail because Bruce could never stop being Batman, Barbara honestly believes that Bruce deserves and can be happy after everything he has suffered, ironically being the one who has high expectations for their marriage. Tim on the other hand is just like "Bro....Really?"

The way Bruce treats his wife after finding out she's a Poison Ivy plant is pretty funny. While Tim continued to love Annie even after discovering her mud nature and was devastated by her death, Bruce simply let the plant die in cold blood like: "Meh. I don't wanna anything with something that's not even legally considered alive. I'm already satisfied with Selina and Barbara...", throwing away the wedding ring as if nothing had happened between them🤣🤣🤣🤣
@demod2080

It shows that Tim is a very loving person, openly behaving like himself with or without the costume on. Dick is the same way, even moreso after he became Nightwing. Bruce just suffered from repressing his emotions for so long. After so much heartbreak, it's easy for him to return back to his cold hearted self so he down have to acknowledge the pain of betrayal and the sadness that comes with caring.

Just gonna remind people that Annie was a lost and confused victim who wanted nothing to do with Clayface, and did everything in her limited power to protect Tim from him. Susan was gaslighting Bruce with the aid of chemical doping so she could murder him at sea. Not really the same. But it does bother me how readily the entire Bat family just kills them all. Like, the no killing rule was fairly established in this series. I know they were plant people, but they were still definitely PEOPLE.

@@CapnAlcesExactly. There was a difference between Annie and the plant woman. Though, you did bring up a very good point. I suppose the no kill rule for Batman and the crew is no killing Humans. When it comes to anyone that's not a Homosapien, then there's a very big grey area.

You know something interesting, I actually saw the "Chase Me" short before I had seen the episode "Chemistry" and so when I saw the episode I thought "Oh that's nice that they actually are picking up a plot point from it" because at the end of the short a woman that looked exactly like Susan asked Bruce for a dance. Obviously when I got older I realised that they probably just reused the character model from the episode for "Chase Me". Unless you want to say that the short takes place before the episode.

The relationship between Batman and Poison Ivy is much more interesting than what it seems, being sadly overshadowed by the most popular shippings with Selina and Talia. Ivy, despite being by far the vilest female Batman villain, is perhaps the one who has most openly shown her love for the dark knight, even having altars and posters of him in her Arkham cell. She has actually said several times that the opportunity to meet Batman was her main motivation for becoming a villain, not to mention that she has told the caped crusader everytime he has saved her life that she knows he deep down loves her. The definitive proof that Ivy needed to be sure about Batman's feelings for her is the gift that he gave her for helping him in a case: a huge cell in Arkham in which the Sun entered abundantly, giving great well-being to both her and her plants. As for Batman, Bruce has openly affirmed, even without being being affected by the toxin, that Ivy is the most beautiful woman he has ever met, without even Selina being able to compete with her. In fact, when Bruce was under the effects of Ivy's toxin for months, he felt a genuine pleasure and peace with her, something he actually missed after being released. The reason the two have not entered into a serious romantic relationship is simply because Bruce is aware that Ivy is too evil and twisted for their bond to work, so anything romantic between them gets sadly reduced to pure fantasy
@alexlemonds2838
@alexlemonds2838 4 ай бұрын
Him and Ivy are more alike than most people realize. They're both highly intelligent, resourceful people driven by a life consuming cause and want to make a difference in the world. Even how Pam was first depicted in Pretty Poison, as a wealthy person with a dual costumed identity, mirrored Bruce. The key difference is that while Poison Ivy is willing to kill Batman firmly abides by his no killing rule. I do like how in Eternal Youth she's seemingly trying to convince him to join her side, recognizing how similar they are, it ultimately being to no avail. So, I don't think it's that big a stretch to say the DCAU version did in fact carry a little torch for him, some modicum of twisted affection.

Batman, more than a lot of other heroes, really is defined by tragedy. Because no matter how many times I watch Mask of the Phantasm or this episode, I never go, “Bruce, you fool! Gotham needs you!” Or “something obviously isn’t right here, you’re being so gullible”. Despite me knowing how these stories end, seeing Bruce (not Batman) potentially having a happy love life and an escape from his past guilt is always something I want for him. I get excited that he’s ready to hang up the cowl. But if he does, the story ends and like you said, people that need him get hurt. So he can’t have that. In my opinion It’s what makes Batman just as timeless as Sherlock Holmes or James Bond. We want the best and the worst for him, at the same time.

This is such a sad episode. Not only because yet again Poison Ivy is almost saved by Batman in another seemingly tragic death, but because of how quick Batman is to disregard the life of Susan being snuffed out by the sea. It's very much the attitude he has in his older years in Batman Beyond, where he has no patience or compassion for the criminals of Neo Gotham.

Bruce Wayne is often described as a _millionaire playboy._ As a child, this phrase meant merely a naughty magazine I wasn't supposed to know about. But before Hef had made that word into his personal brand, it described a certain type of New World wastrel. Primo genitor to a ruthless American robber-baron. Dad may have risen early, worked hard, and struck oil. But for Junior, life was just a bowl of cherries: all fruit and no labours. The model Kane and Finger likely had in mind was Howard Hughes, who inherited 75% of his petro-technocrat father's estate at age 19. He used that fortune to get into Hollywood on the ground floor and pushed the envelope of aerospace technology just before the US got into World War II. No wonder he made a killing! As a young movie mogul, Hughes was known to make use of his access to successive crops of Hollywood starlets. To his generation of macho elites, the word _romance_ meant a series of casual conquests. The thrill of the chase, and no time for sentiment. Tough-talking, hard drinking. And frequent rolls in the hay. It was an adolescent fantasy. And I have no doubt it was Bob Kane's too. As much as his wish to be _el Zorro._ But is this how Bruce Wayne truly behaved? (You, who know the early comics better than anyone?) Adam West's Wayne seemed squeaky clean. But if we read Burt Ward's _My Life in Tights,_ we learn the lascivious truth was not fit for broadcast before the watershed. Yet in Frank Miller's _Dark Knight Returns,_ Gordon lets slip that Bruce was apparently faking it. At all those power lunches and society galas, his champagne glass was secretly full of diet ginger ale. In _Year One,_ we even find Bruce paying escorts - not to actually go to bed with him, but only to pretend they had. His flirtations with Selina and Talia can be seductive and charming. Full of longing, and an ardent desire for possession. But that's just attraction. Love is more like loyalty. It must be built by piling up its proofs. Day after day, year over year. Long after life has ceased to be either seductive or charming. Bruce can't do that. He could have, with Andrea. But he won't now. The choice he's made won't leave him enough hours in the day. And if family is about putting in the hours, then I guess Alfred is Bruce's only family - something Keaton's Bruce managed to point out. Keaton's Bruce - who was too honest to tell Vicky Vale they'd « _try to love each other_ » - also got a hair closer to his own _actually_ happy _actual_ ending with Pfeifer's Selina. His ripping off of the cowl at the end of _Returns_ seemed to suggest he was willing to throw in the towel, if only he could save someone as demented as himself. (Whether he succeeded or not is left up in the air. But I'm sort of glad that was the final Burton film - so I can make believe the answer is yes.) But all this brings me back to _Phantasm._ Could Conroy's Bruce really have played the cad with Veronica Vreeland? He who seemed so tragic and pure? That drink in the face seems to suggest he did worse than not return her calls. I guess grown-ups are complicated. There's always the official story. And then what we do in the shadows. Bruce isn't made of stone, after all. Maybe he would never consciously _do_ anything to make Veronica think he didn't care. But that fact may still have become obvious through his omissions. The generation that was reared on BTAS was born post women's lib. About half of us were the product of what they still called « _broken homes_ ». We entered adolescence only a few years after the worst ravages of the AIDS epidemic. At the time, the idea of a _playboy_ seemed a trifle outmoded. I'm sure they still existed. But in that time and place, we learned about the sexual revolution in history class, and playboys lay somewhere outside the cultural ideal.

Very well said. Another commenter suggested that Bob Kane was likely influenced by The Great Gatsby, which I can totally believe. Early comic Bruce Wayne did have regular girlfriends, most notably the actress Julie Madson, but his time spent as Batman (and having to slip off, making some lame excuses, in order to become Batman) put a strain on their relationship. I absolutely think that there was more to a Bruce and Veronica’s relationship at one point, but it never stood a chance of going anywhere.

The more you think about Batman in the DCAU, the more tragic he becomes. Chemistry was a bitter sweet adventure for Bruce, as he was forced to watch his one chance at happiness slip away. The pheromones may have influenced Bruce, but he chose to marry Susan. He chose to be happy because, on a subconscious level, he wants to be happy, even if he won't admit it.

I'm have mix opinions about "Batman can't be happy" argument. On one hand it fits with the dark tone of his stories and gives people a message that it's possible to overcome tragedy and keep doing good for others, that a person doesn't need to be marry in order to be happy or have a purpose in life. However I think the whole "Batman must choose one thing or another" and "He can't be hero if someone is waiting for him at home" or "if he's married he becomes less effective as hero" it's dumb. Not only many other heroes like Superman and Spider Man, as well real people like cops and soldiers, proved these arguments wrong (they all have families and still do jobs that are risky), but it complete ignores all the other people in Batman's life, like Alfred or Robin, who also are worry for his safety.

Personally I feel as though Bruce didn’t choose the right path by dedicating himself fully to Batman. Sure, Gotham is probably better off with him in those early years, but after he bring Dick, Barbara, and Tim into his life, Instead of seizing the opportunity to move on from his grief, he regresses further into Batman. He loses the humanity and compassion of Bruce Wayne and becomes cold and unfeeling towards the criminals of Gotham. Now he does bring himself from the blackness of vengeance in the Justice League, but as we see in BB after that subsides and his relationship with Diana falls through he regresses even further into the hermit we see in the beginning of the show. In the end, Bruce dies with only Terry left in his life. Never really breaking from his grief or growing as a person. He should have at least made strides to be better with his relationships.

The tragedy never ends for Bruce. Poor guy. That said, I appreciate his post-traumatic growth (a concept I learned from another BTAS fan project, The Arkham Sessions). Also, can't wait to hear your thoughts on Roxy Rocket, the breakout babe not meant to be. I like the idea of her, but Roxy was laid on really thick. I think they tried too hard. When we rewatched STAS and saw her cameo, and Supes says "So you're the 'famous' Roxy Rocket," I laughed and said out loud, "No, she isn't." My GF asks, "Who?" I go "Roxy Rocket." And she says back, "Oh yeah, Betty Bombshell!"

I have a soft spot for episodes that feature villains who serve their one and only purpose in one story. Sewer King, Ventris, Baby Doll, Maxie Zeus, they had perfect one time appearances. (Yes I'm aware Baby Doll appeared again but that exception proves the rule because Love is a Croc is abysmal on all levels)

Bruce loved Andrea to the point he'd give up becoming Batman for her. But in Begins a childhood crush is treated like adult love then at the end Rachel dumps him for being different from he was before he left for 7 years. Half the reason he gives up being Batman for 8 years before Rises is because Rachel chose Harvey and friendzoned him.

It's a very underrated comic book and has one my favorites takes on Ivy, with her not being a costume villain, but rather just a average looking woman and it's her pheromones that cause her victims to allucinate and see her as this gorgeus godness of nature all fans know.

9:30 Nah, that's just the truth. Even in the Bible & Greek myth many men have met their demise by way of wicked women because men are simple creatures at the base, it's a tale as old as time. There are even the modern examples of prince Henry or even just average men throwing their life's savings at E-girls. This assessment of the imagery is spot on because even the strongest of men can falter or be manipulated at a moment of weakness, and that weakness is normally women. Which itself can be flipped from a femtatal to a bad guy going after the Hero's girl, such as Major Force shoving Kyle Rayner's girlfriend into the fridge.

Won't be surprised if the MotP biker takedown scene is based on contemporary anime back then on the 90s; betting on AKIRA if not Dirty Pair for inspirational animation basis. "Chemistry" is a good enough episode, but even I think Ivy's pheromonal modus operandi feels like it happens too fast and especially too well against Bruce initially. 9:31: Says something if and when one is of the opinion that Poison Ivy "post-House & Garden" is always a series of independent plant clones just doing the remorseful woman's dirty work up to the Justice League era. Really, now, gotta admire the possibilities of Ivy's creations getting increasingly self-intelligent and becoming their own people. 10:20: Brings into mind Luz Noceda's late father Manny from The Owl House, if not possible Star Wars storylines where Order 66 was successfully prevented and the Empire never formed. Imagine a worldline where the good man miraculously got cured of his ails, *only to doom an entire magical world via humanocentric genocide whilst making sure Luz stays cripplingly sheltered because his daughter never read a charming book series named The Good Witch Azura which results in her never finding friends, courage, inspiration, and love,* and imagine a worldline where Palpatine's machinations were successfully foiled and having newly appointed Jedi Master Anakin and his beloved Padme happily and publicly giving birth to twins, among other triumphs... *only for the galaxy to be utterly curbstomped by the extragalactic Yuuzhan Vong due to unprevented complacency and the sore lack of adaptation on matters with the stagnant Republic and the spoiled Jedi Order.* (In short, it's Flashpoint all over again.) Kind of racist, the fact that in cartoons like this, we can't see humans melt into goop, and yey we're allowed to see plant people be give such horrible treatment. 11:20: That's one more Ivy plant clone down, I guess. 11:29: The TV Tropes page for this episode makes one feel sympathetic for Susan because of this brutal ice coldness. Shame this didn't explore The Batman Adventures issue 33 - "Just Another Night". So, which is better, comics Roxy Rocket or animated canon Roxy Rocket?

I think in the DCAU Wonder Woman might be the best choice of girlfriend for Batman. But I Wonder what was her fate in Batman Beyond? Is she dead, retired or did she returned to Themyscyra?

Are you going to do a video of Roxy rocket I've always had a soft spot for that character to the point where I thought up a story idea where her and firefly team up. I just thought it would be an interesting idea given both their backgrounds working in film and their extreme tendencies.

Bruce never dated Veronica Vreeland. The woman in Mask of the Phantasm was a nobody voiced by Marilyn Henner. You can tell by the hairstyle. Veronica’s arc has always been consistent in the DCAU- a close but vapid socialite friend of Bruce Wayne.

The Arkham verse is more expansive then you may think, and it has a vary similar process to BTAS when it comes to how the design characters, and just like BTAS it took lesser characters like anarky and updated him. Just a thought I guess but I'd say it's worth looking into it, especially considering they managed to modernize the riddler where BTAS struggled to...
