I love the detail that both Phantasm’s voice and Andrea’s dad are voiced by the same man. It’s not only a cool misdirect but also shows that Andrea wants the last thing her victims to hear is the voice of the man they helped kill

So glad you're reacting to this. No Batman TAS viewing would be complete without it. And not nearly enough reactors have reacted to this film. In an interview, Mark Hamill talked about taking his family to go see it on Christmas Day, 1993 in NYC, but only 6 or 7 people were in the audience, whom Mark invited to watch with his family. I wonder how many people thought about going to the theatre that day and decided not to, missing out on an actual "Christmas with the Joker". ;)

@marinaathanasiou6705 Жыл бұрын
A masterpiece forever unmatched in the world of Batman. The phenomenal Andrea Beaumont voiced excellently by the brilliant Dana Delany who in the near century that Batman has existed is undoubtedly the greatest love interest Batman has ever had in any medium, a brilliant, wholly new character created for the film. She was formidable, both as a lover and as an adversary. She is independent, beautiful and knows how to take care of herself. With enough tragedy in her own life, she and Bruce had a lot in common. Their first meeting is as morbid as it is fitting - she is talking to her dead mother at her gravesite, and Bruce is conversing with his dead parents - and the romance that blossoms out of that shared connection is no less believable for how quickly it ensues. Delany voices Andrea with a welcome assertiveness that makes the courtship that much more playful and witty, and the chemistry never feels forced. This is Batman’s “one hope for a normal life”, but it’s far more significant than something like the extremely toxic and frustratingly inconsistent relationship with Catwoman or any other relationship, because Andrea comes into Bruce’s life at a time when his nocturnal future is not yet certain. Batman's love life has always been the least interesting thing about him and even in the comics the only realy interersting love interests are Catwoman and Talia al Ghūl and in all honesty he doesn't have a future with either of them. It’s that uncertainty that leads to Phantasm’s most powerful scene. The unexpected happiness Bruce has found with Andrea leads him once again to his parents’ grave. But this time, he’s there to beg them to release him from the vow he made years ago on that terrible night in Crime Alley, even though he himself has always held that power all along. Andrea’s response "Maybe they already have. Maybe they sent me." both underlines her understanding of the vow’s importance and affirms her love for him. It’s a poignant, beautifully written and performed scene, and is more emotionally impactful than any moment in other Batman films. It’s this that leads to Phantasm’s other signature moment: Bruce donning Batman’s cape and cowl for the very first time. There are so many little things that help make this instantly iconic - from Bruce holding out his hand for his cowl, to Shirley Walker’s thunderous score, to Alfred’s terrified reaction. But it's the scene’s tragic underpinnings that really stick with you. The first “I’m Batman” moment in a Batman movie is usually triumphant. In Phantasm, it’s not only wordless - it’s sad. And given more notes to play in these flashback sequences than ever before, Kevin Conroy proves just as proficient at voicing a lighter and more optimistic version of the pre-Caped Crusader Bruce as he is in embodying the intense brooding of a fully-fledged Batman. Dana Delany's voice performance in the film impressed filmmakers and they loved working with her so much, it led to them casting her as Lois Lane in Superman: The Animated Series.

Andrea like Batman´s villians got a relateable tragic story we can relate too. She is possible Batman´s most dangerous foe even if it feels wrong to call her a villian. The Joker laugh when the themepark explodes! This movie is one of THE best standalone batman stories! A perfect balance between Bruce Wayne and Batman and a great dash of gruesome in just the right places (the gravestone death & the dead mobster with the grin for example). "It`s like the Grim Reaper." Incidentally, the Phantasm`s Camic Book counterpart was called the Reaper and killed Joe Chill, the murderer of Bruce`s parents in "Batman: Year Two" which made Bruce realize not all criminals are psychopathic madmen like the Joker, most are just normal dudes and chicks struggling to ends meet for their families and driven to crime by desperation. That epiphany combined with the Comics Code Authority resulted in the "No guns, no kill" rule.

I remember watching this movie so many times as a kid, It was my favourite and it still is up there. On Andrea Beaumont, I think what makes her so great is that she's so strong on her own, but still flawed and vulnerable at times. She's not the Girlboss all the time, she has layers and many of those layers are dark. The Batman universe truly has some of the best strong female characters out there.

You know I never thought about it before but you are exactly right during the iconic park exploding scene. Like anyone can see Bruce and Andrea are different because she kills people who personally wronged her and he brings in all manner of criminals who are hurting others. However the biggest difference between them is in that moment when all of them could have died she choose to get herself and the person she wanted revenge on out for her vengeance. Bruce would never make that call, he would have chosen to save whoever he could from that situation and if forced to pick he would save someone good and innocent even if it meant the villain might survive and get away.

15:20, the most epic moment of the film is Bruce first putting on the suit and the choir singing. I've actually found if you play the music where he puts on the mask in "Arkham City"just as you press the suit up button, it syncs perfectly. This was the first time Joker really killed anyone since in the animated series, he couldn't kill thanks to censors. There was a follow up comic in the BTAS universe which explains that Joker escaped Andrea and then someone who seemed to be the Joker came after her, but it was really the DA Arthur(the person who sold her dad out). She tricked him using her smoke and he was killed and she was forced to run away, as she knew she couldn't be with Bruce.

I love your point about strong female characters. I think one of the issues with the modern strong female character is they are afraid to give them any flaws or real struggles. The best strong characters have flaws that they have to overcome or even make the wrong decision but are strong despite that. You cant relate to a perfect character who never makes a mistake. Be it male or female the struggle is what makes the character strong.

No, Joker and Toyman don't work together in _Justice League_ but they do both make appearances in the same series (in different episodes) and they both work with other villains. Hamill's Joker is also great in this one, no distracting Harley, just pure murderous Joker with some great lines delivered. My sister and I love quoting the "dis-con-nected!" line 🤣 Also great work by Shirley Walker on the music (in the credits a certain Hans Zimmer is named, so he has been involved with Batman before Nolan's movies). Guessed the twist early on though, if only because I saw the Dick Tracy movie just a few days before this, has a similar twist 😉 Wish they explained Phantasm's power more but that''s a minor gripe, still a great villain and foil for Bats.

Best voice acting of all time..Mark Hamill as the Joker--I don't think anyone could've done it better, no wonder he did the job for more than 25 years. RIP to Keven Conway..I think he got in just as much time doing Batman. This one's my favorite Batman animated films.
