Creating a 3d open world on Psx hardware before gta 3, was really ambitious. This and Driver was mind blowing to see, back In the day. It's flawed and really janky, but It's still one heck a technical feat.

Im 26 and had no clue this existed. It looks janky even for that era but the fact they manage to create a 3D openworld sandbox Batman Game with 3 characters and a playable Batmobile on PS1 in freaking 1998, 3 years before GTA3, 13 years before Arkham City, and 17 years before Arkham Knight is very impressive. If this game had more development time, it could have been another Goldeneye. Im not even sure if PS1 was designed for 3D Open World games but Props to Probe for this technical feat.

As @nobody mentioned, batman and Robin 1998 video game , is one of those ingenious titles that greatly influenced the whole video games industry. An open-world game didn't really exist at that time. And it's not just the open-world, the walkthrough of the game is also wonderful. The evidence that Batman finds in this game and finds the next steps by examining or putting them together, is also used later in many games. Apart from all this, the gothic and dark atmosphere of the game is very pleasant and lovely. This game is always associated with pleasant wanderings at night and a glorious sense of loneliness in my mind. I have nothing to do with the rest of the video games that have been made under the title of Batman, but Batman and Robin 1998 on PS1 was a masterpiece that influenced many games that followed it, and many of today's titles owe their genius to games like Batman and Robin on ps1.

This game made me a huge fan of Frosty, who was Mr. Freeze's sidekick in this game. You can see him at the 32:53 mark. Sure, he might have been a Captain Cold rip-off, but it was such an intriguing character. I used to have his action figure (somehow I lost it in a move) and he was called "Frostbite". For Halloween 1998 my Mom made a homemade costume for him. In the movie, he was the guy always saying "Uh, yeah boss..." but in the game, they made Frosty more important than Mr. Freeze because of how many times you fought Frosty. His backstory was interesting too. He was a professional hockey player that had a failed career by the time he reached the big leagues, not scoring goals much and getting too many times into the penalty box. Before his hockey days, he was known for committing petty theft crimes. After failing his professional career being a laughing stock, he became a "murderer in cold blood" with a "bad mask", as his wanted poster clue in the game said & other clue descriptions of them. Loved to kill people to rob them, and pull off big heists. Besides his wanted poster, there's one series of clues where you put together pieces of surveillance camera reveals a photo of him standing at Snowy Cones, a picture of him and Freeze together, as well pieces to modem where Frosty tried to research a computer store's opening hours. The modem still had in its cache an audio recording of the "Ram World" computer store of its opening hours. Some of the clues are also hand-written messages to Freeze written very neatly in blue ink (showing his orderliness), while Freeze's messages to Frosty are written in sloppy black ink. So in a sense, Frosty was a money-driven killer with a hockey gimmick, trying to restore his public "fame" but in a bad way. So with that, it was only natural for Mr. Freeze to hire him as his sidekick, which Frosty sought fame, power, and cash. In the movie Frosty's actor was Joe Sabatino, and because Frosty isn't given a real name in any of the clues (at least in my multiple playthroughs), I consider Joe Sabatino to be Frosty's name, hehe.

I was one of them, it was in August 1998. I bought the strategy guide on the same day because that was literally the *_only_* way to know what to do, what clues to find, what walls to break, how to easily kill bosses, etc. GameFAQs or Acclaim's site didn't have much either. To this day, it's almost like the game being this confusing was a sales gimmick to make money selling guides. My Uncle felt the same way about the Zelda NES games. As for the bosses being easy to kill, the strategy guide recommended you to stock up on aerial/vine/polar missiles, shoot them at the boss, and then keep kicking them when they are down. Tear gas bombs work well too and the brass knuckles can (oddly) do more kick damage. So throughout the whole game, I made sure I had 10 tear gas bombs, 10 aerial attack missles, 10 vine slicing missiles, 10 polar assault missles, and 10 bat tazers. That's 50 of each and it became *_extremely_* useful for me by "Day 3", especially with all of the annoying hockeymen. You could easily get missles in the Westside Station (aerial), Axis Chemicals (vine), Ice Rink (polar), and the computer store (tasers). Without those, there would have been absolutely no way for me to kill all of the bosses and the hockeymen, because the fighting combos for me barely work & the bosses block me a lot.

I wonder if it would have worked better refining the side scrolling of batman forever on snes to work with this one for interiors. Well, this was interesting and entertaining. Definitely had to be fun driving, maybe not that fun fighting lol. Buy it was fun seeing this. Thank you for the upload. Thankfully we have the perfect batman game, arkham knight that only left us wanting more like more vehicles and usage of the batcave.

As a kid, I was like "Where do I go after the museum?...". The rest of the game, I literally had no idea what to do, or, where to go, afterwards because I never got a clue as to what you had to deal with, next.

I think you had to drive around Gotham and hope that you find police cars, those cars meant a crime scene was close by and there were always clues around crime scenes that let you know where the heck to go next lol.

@@MisterX867- I thought that would help just by driving around Gotham City & collecting clues/health/etc., but, that didn't really work out for me. In theory, I was like "The more police cars I see, the more it's gonna help out...". In practice, it didn't work.
