Honestly I almost respect how much this film gets wrong, mostly because a lot of it can't even really be attributed to Shumacher, or even Clooney and Schwarznegger. It's a textbook example of how a film being a byproduct of a franchise or merchandising really just backfires It's still an absolute guilty pleasure movie though. Shumacher became a strong advocate for doing a Year One-type film after how badly this film was received and it inadvertently led to films like the Nolan trilogy and The Batman that treated the character's comics as respectable forms of storytelling again

I always felt this was a movie that tried to have its cake and eat it too. It tried to have more serious elements like Mr. Freeze's motivation to save his wife, Alfred's illness, and Batgirl's tragic past..... but it also wanted to be a campy cartoon like the Adam West Batman, and so we got ridiculous moments like Mr. Freeze in fuzzy polar bear slippers leading a singalong of frozen henchmen. It was like water and oil, though, the two didn't go well together and you just had a mess. Still, credit where credit is due, Arnold chewed the hell out of the scenery, and this movie is endlessly quotable for all the wrong reasons. In small doses I can take it, just never ask me to actually watch it unless I'm really, REALLY drunk.

This movie really was a necessary evil, in that we needed it as a shining example of what *not* to do, both in terms of superhero movie, as well as a Batman movie. I do think that "Batman Forever" gets unfairly maligned and lumped in with "Batman & Robin" in terms of bottom-of-the-barrel superhero movies. "Forever" was a good, lighthearted Batman movie that at least attempted to delve into the psyche of Bruce Wayne a bit, which was more than what was explored in either of the two Burton movies, where Keaton's Batman wasn't really a character. "Batman & Robin" REALLY feels like an extended episode of the 1960s Adam West show, but with too much money thrown at it lol. This movie is fun.... but fun for all the wrong reasons lol.

I enjoy this movie. It doesn't always work (why even have Bane in it?) but it feels like an attempt at a 90s version of the Adam West show, which I grew up with, and which probably is the most comics-accurate Batman movie made. Accurate to the 50s-60s comics, that is. I'm not saying B&R was successful at it, but I still enjoy the effort personally. I enjoy the Nolan films and the new Batman was OK, but Batman doesn't need to be semi-realistic or grim-dark all the time. People seem to forget that the Dark Knight returns comic (Frank Miller) which basically popularized the dark tone after 50+ years, still had a lot of humor. I feel like alot of people took the wrong lessons from tDKR and Year One, and suddenly we had stupid shit like the Joker without a face or Harley Quinn blowing up children. And then completely joyless (but competent) movies like the Batman. I am thankful there has been room for silly stuff like the 60s Batman, B&R and the Gotham show. That said, the 90s animated show and the Justice League show have probably my favorite version of Batman outside of the comics. And the animated versions of tDKR and the Killing Joke are some of the worst things I've ever seen.

Modern Gurz: No! This is a misunderstood masterpiece! You just don't get it! It was all supposed to be campy, so therefore the lazy and cringy lines are all intentional. Stop making people do homework for comics! I don't care if the 4th film to a franchise that started out dark goes campy because comic books do that all the time even though they aren't movies. So I know that I'm talking about. Oh well!

The only thing that didn't change the movie is it's awesome soundtrack: Bone Thugs N Harmony * Goo Goo Dolls * The Smashing Pumpkins * Arkarna * R. Kelly * Lauren Christy * Eric Benet * Soul Coughing * Moloko * R.E.M * Underworld * Jewel * Me'Shell Ndegeocello * and Elliot Goldenthal

Ever since I seen them re-review Steel I had a feeling they would review Batman and Robin.
