No kidding! His line before that one is also chilling when you rewatch that scene. When he says "There's just one problem..." you can hear a bit of a growl enter his voice when he says "problem." That is right when he shifts from Harvey to Big Bad Harv, and it's in the middle of a sentence! His duality is so close it's not separated between sentences.

Can I just say, I love how both Bruce’s and Harvey’s secret are both based on another identity, while Bruce’s is obviously Batman(the hero persona he never reveals for his friends’/family’s protection) Harvey has the Big bad Harv(the villainous persona that he doesn’t reveal to protect himself from issues it will cause him) keeping them secret, although helpful in the moment, causes them both suffering at certain points, with Two-Face being an example of what might happen if that secret got out in the most tragic way imaginable

I also feel like having the blue skin distances him from a real burn victim's injuries, which I think is a good thing considering how stigmatized they already are thanks to their disfigurements without having them directly correlated to the explicitly evil side of a supervillain.

Even though I get what you're saying, I don't think there's anything wrong w/ villains having burns or scars. I've known actual burn victims. A girlfriend of mine had an uncle who was severely burned as a young man. He is now bald, with a disfigured face, and nubs for ears. He is also a sheriff's detective and, by all accounts, a good man, and a good family man. I also have a disfiguring scar that keeps me off the beach, under normal circumstances, but I don't think there's anything wrong with their portrayal on villains. In fact I think it makes sense - it's an outward representation of the twisted part of their souls. Doctor Who not allowing Davros to be in a wheelchair because of representation is the height of this brain-dead mentality. In reality, even children understand that there is a big difference between fictional portrayals of scars and their real world counterparts. Not the same thing at all.

One thing I think they could have emphasized in the context of the show, at least in some way, is why THAT specific coin was so deeply important to Harvey because even before his disfigurement, he always had it in his person. Obviously we know why due to our actual knowledge of Two-Face's comic lore and it was somewhat mentioned in some tie-in comics but still I think it maybe would have helped deepen our knowledge and investment in the character.

I would love an entire story about Two-Face losing his iconic coin and how that affects him. Does the coin lose its meaning if it isn't his sentimental keepsake/heirloom, or does he care about the external symbols of the coin. Why a double-sided half dollar as opposed to another coin - wouldn't any ordinary coin do? Imagine the tragic end as Harvey struggles to once again make decisions on his own, only to mar a second coin as his personal choice to reject rational decision. Think of the dr~ama!

Mr Freeze may had the most tragic story arc but Two-Face had the most emotional with every featured episode that delved deeper and darker into his fragile duality, what made his story more sad was he started out as a heroic figure with a good heart who was very close friends to both Batman and especially Bruce Wayne. He truly walked a fine line of good vs evil and the fact that he created a 3rd persona called The Judge by trying to take himself out truly showed how far gone Harvey Dent fell to his own dark side. Your comment about how Batman/Two-Face are both absolutely obsessed with their own causes, to the point that they both endanger themselves without a second thought, was spot on. Two-Face is a great Batman villain because he embodies the duality of human nature, representing the constant struggle between good and evil. His split personality, fueled by a tragic backstory, adds depth and complexity to his character. Two-Face stands out due to his psychological depth and the exploration of themes such as justice, morality, and the consequences of choices. His obsession with duality and his reliance on the flip of a coin to make decisions make him a fascinating character. While Two-Face is undoubtedly a compelling character, he falls short of being the best Batman villain due to the presence of other iconic adversaries. Villains like The Joker and Ra's al Ghul have a more profound impact on Batman's world and challenge him in unique ways. One of the problems with Two-Face stories is the repetitive nature of his character arc. Often, his stories revolve around the same themes of his obsession with chance and his struggle to maintain his sanity, which can become predictable for long-time readers. Two-Face's reliance on the coin flip can limit storytelling possibilities by reducing the complexity of his decision-making process. This binary approach to decision-making may make his character seem one-dimensional and restrict opportunities for nuanced character development. While Two-Face's obsession with chance adds a unique aspect to his character, it often overshadows other potential storylines, preventing him from reaching his full potential as the best Batman villain. The repetitive nature of Two-Face's storyline can sometimes diminish his impact as a villain over time. Readers can often feel desensitized to his character, as they already know the outcome of his internal struggle and most twists they attempt have already been attempted at some point before. This can lead to a lack of suspense and reduced emotional investment in his stories. Another issue that seems prevalent with the character is that writers often struggle to find new and compelling angles that don't rely too heavily on re-exploring or somehow retelling Two-Face's origin to create an engaging narrative which can often be the case for other characters as well. Two-Face's origin story is deeply ingrained in his character, making it difficult to separate him from his tragic past. Dont get me wrong though, despite some repetitive storylines Two-Face is still one of the most compelling Batman villains of all time but there's certain elements preventing him from being the very best. For me pesronally he is right up there but a bit behind Riddler, Ra's al Ghul and Joker (those three in no particular order.)
@zemox2534

Dude, by that logic, bloody Joker should be boring and predictable . Joker repeats the same patterns over and over again: He tries to push Bruce over the edge, fails, and repeats the same dance again. He has beeb doing this shit for years, and yet fickle fans keep sucking his D and call him the best bat villain, even though he is the most boring, predictable, and fucking overexposed! The problem with Dent is the same problem with loads of Bat rogues who are not the bloody clown. They are all underutilised. Writers are just too fucking lazy to fully utilise Two Face and push him in new directions and ignore the complexity he has! The same applies to Crane, Kill Croc, and the rest of the rogues because they are not as "popular " as Quinn or Joker. This limits their potential because DC would rather shove Joker into every major storyline and treat him like the greatest Bat villain of all time. I honestly hate The Joker because of how overexposed and frankly, overrated he has become. Yes, I said it. Joker is overrated and overused and needs to go on hiatus. If the stupid writers put more focus on Two-Face and the other rogues, they wouldn't feel like bloody supporting characters/jobbers to the white face wolly!

But I actually found the portrayal of Two Face in the movie adaption of The Dark Knight Returns super compelling, and feel he deserves a shoutout here as well. *Spoilers ahead for those that haven’t watched it but want to* The idea of him getting reconstructive surgery only to be incapable of seeing himself as anything besides a damaged, scarred monster warping his perception of what he actually looks like was gut wrenching, and felt like something that could have easily happened in the world of BTAS. “At least both sides match now…”

As a kid, I'd always considered Two-Face to be Batman's definitive archvillain. He's a gangster first and foremost, but with a gimmick, putting him in the realm of old Dick Tracy rogues. I thought of the Joker as the "wild card" that sprang up now and then, but I still can't bring myself to think of it as "Batman and the Joker." To me, it'll always be "Batman and Two-face." I mean, BTAS did do more with Two-Face than the comic had for a while. I swear, most 'great' Two-Face stories I get told about are either a new version of the origin, or him getting his face fixed. There's never anything about his psyche, never anything about trying to help mentally instead of physically, hell half the time they seem to forget the dude was a DA. There's some out there, like his appearance in Gotham Central, or the first arc of All-Star Batman that actually used his DA origins, but it's few and far between. BTAS really shines through because of this, it explores Harvey as a character, probes the depths of what makes Two-Face tick, and even manages to continue this into TNBA with Judgement Day. Honestly, the two shows have about as many amazing, groundbreaking Two-Face stories as all the comics for the whole 50 odd years before them. Note that I am not including the many imposter Two-Face characters that kept showing up in the Silver and Bronze Ages, for not only are they pale imitations, but they still do the exact same stories with almost no variation.

🪴Looking forward to this, for obvious reason, eheh... Two-Face is undoubtedly the villain that embodies the BTAS era of Batman the most, even moreso than the Joker we feel. Of course, we could go for the simple straightforward answer of how he plays to both the highs and the lows of the series (specifically in the department of mental health focusing more on suppression/erasing alters instead of reforming them. Two-Face is ultimately his own person who deserves respect on that front), but we will say he's by far the most compelling character to become a villain for Bruce. Harvey being good friends with Bruce Wayne, to the point we see him in multiple episodes before the scarring incident, is just good worldbuilding. It makes every encounter with Two-Face much more personal then other villains/antagonists can manage because Bruce simply cares. (If he cares about Two-Face or just Harvey that's up for debate, but still). We're honestly sad they didn't go farther on that with the New Adventures. Two-Face caused Tim Drake to become Robin, that feels like it should be more a sticking point...! We watched the last episode where The Judge surfaces (also his own person worthy of respect btw) and we can't recall if Bruce even mentions they used to be friends. It's funny, recently a Two Face fan introduced us to the recent run of Gotham Nocturne. Where it establishes that "Big Bad Harv" was a coping mechanism to fight the abuse that Harvey got. And Harvey even admits that he does genuinely need Two-Face, even if they don't always get along. Speaking as a system ourselves, we think that's a very important step in the greater narrative of talking about Two Face. It humanizes Two Face when most writers tend to write him off as a bad symptom of a disorder instead of a person. (Still has him kill people so... you know. Baby steps.) Whatever the video turns out to be, we're definitely on team "Probably the best depiction of Two Face". After all, if they didn't try introducing his plurality, we might not even be talking about it right now, would we? (Also slightly unrelated note, in BTAS we typically interpreted Harvey as a man of color, does anyone else feel that way? We remember his skintone became extremely light in the Justice League and didn't really like that.)
@SerumLake
@SerumLake Жыл бұрын
I completely agree that BTAS Two-Face is African American - this is because Billy Dee Williams played Harvey Dent in Tim Burton's first Batman film and the creative team were encouraged to sync up with the films wherever possible - See Selina Kyle's blonde hair, "Jack Napier", and the design of The Penguin. In The New Batman Adventures they dropped the references to the movies (for the most part), and Two-Face looked like he had been whitewashed, which I think was unnecessary. I don't know if this was deliberate, or if perhaps they were trying to tie him a bit closer to Tommy Lee Jones, but I will always prefer the original design.

@@SerumLake I always figured that BTAS Two-Face was half Caucasian and half Latino. Despite his appearance though, I'm pretty sure canonically he is Caucasian. A more famous example is Lex Luthor's appearance in Superman The Animated Series which quite a few people thought was African-American. I as a kid never thought that because in Greece I'm used to sometimes seeing people just naturally be very tan which is what I thought Lex was and considering his adjusted appearance in Justice League and Justice League Unlimited I think I was probably right.

I love this arc for Two-Face We start with him helping Bruce and Gordon who are like brothers too him take down the big bads in Gotham. A very good example of this is when Poison Ivy deputed and Bruce went especially hard in her to cure his friend. Then we have the big day where he's supposed to get rid of Thorne. But after one too many fuck ups Harvey's more angry and vengful side emergee even scaring Bruce. Despite all the therapy he gets nothing could fully kill "Big Bad Harv" When facing the choice either he drip outta office or has hus mental problems released on to the public to destroy him image.His about to blow a fuse but the just smiles. I swear this smile is creepy as hell I don't know just something about how long it extends to an unnatural degree like kinda Joker mix with the voice. Batman/Bruce shows up and he and his old chum almost escaped..... And that's when the explosion happens. When Harvey sees his transformation that scream is HORRIBLE and that reveal stil sends chilld down my spine. I love how not only does his girl stick beside him but Bruce and Gordon for real want to cure him which leads into Second Chance where at this point Harvey has been Two-Face for so long that he has completely given up on a cure even when it's laying right there A main reason why this show is so good is the villains we get to see their lives both on and off the battle ground which is something most writers tend to not do

Personally, my favourite TAS villain is The Mad Hatter. While he isn't a personal foe for Batman, he does represent obsession, something Batman can relate to. Batman can control his obsession, but Jervis can not. His obsession over Alice drove him over the edge, and he turned into a twisted criminal. Also, he is arguably the one villain who came the closet to defeating Bruce. Not by killing him, but by trapping him in his own private Wonderland, where his parents are alive and he is engaged to Selina. And Bruce almost gives in to temptation. Bruce is a man who lost his childhood and accepts he can never get it back, while Jervis refuses to accept reality and wants to act out his fantasties, like a child. In my opinion, Mad Hatter is the best villain from TAS. No offence to Dent. I love Two-Face, but I do not think the writers did enough to fully explore his character or his connection to the coin. Ironically, the TAS spin-off comics actually do a better job exploring Two-Face and his past. It helps that they were not restricted like the cartoon, so they were allowed to reference child abuse. I think one of the reasons Two-Face wasn't given more solo episodes was because the writers overused The Joker. The Joker has more solo episodes than most of the other rogues, Two-Face included. Even back in the 90s, Joker was hogging the spotlight.

only recently started getting into batman but twoface immediately became my favourite villain, hell hes one of my favourite characters altogether. his insanity is so interesting. he can be good, he has that capacity - and for him that decision relies on the flip of a coin. i liked the take the long halloween had on him aswell, or at least i liked how it let me interpret it. he was so stressed by being a lawyer, tired of fighting for justice. then there was a voice in his head saying "wouldnt it just be easier if you didnt have to decide" and the accident triggered him to listen to that voice. now he doesn't have to think about it, now he can relax and let the coin decide for him. he no longer has the job of fighting for justice, no judge to appeal to, no lawyers to argue with, no jury to sway - just an executioner, obeying the will of a coin

it's awesome to see how well The Dark Knight Returns fits into this story of friendship and tragedy even though it was written before the animated series. Even after decades of brutal crime, Bruce still wants to bring his friend back and pays for every treatment and even puts his reputation on the line. It probably wasn't very popular for the Prince of Gotham to vouch for Harvey and try to get the public to be accepting of rehabilitating such a notorious criminal and killer.

The only thing sort of like that is the end of "A Serious House On Serious Earth" where Batman agrees to let Two-Face kill him if he loses the coin flip but Two-Face lets him go. Only to reveal at the end of the comic that Batman had actually lost the coin flip but Harvey chose to let him go instead of listening to his coin.

I would like to clarify something that I have been seeing people say for years but I think they often exaggerate a bit. Harvey Dent and Bruce Wayne's friendship and Harvey Dent overall being an established character prior to his transformation into Two-Face like some people say he was and something that I guess is true but not to a very noteworthy extent. Harvey Dent's appearances were mostly brief and glorified cameos. He was a blink and you miss it cameo in On Leather Wings and he was barely in Pretty Poison where he wasn't even conscious for half of his minimal screen time and was mostly a plot device. Two-Face Part 1 is really his first truly memorable role. Much bigger issue for me is that the relationship between him and his new fiancé Grace is not really well built up to at all since we saw him in his previous appearance that he's been dating other people and so it a bit too sudden. They made the best out of it though and since it doesn't take away from the viewing experience, it's just some issues I have with it.

As a PTSD guy (domestic violence all through my upbringing, also as an only child under a single parent), "Eye Of The Beholder" is THE origin story of Two-Face and... very relatable. Dealing with a bipolar thing on top of trauma, I made my life's goal a sort of "reverse journey" of his, though -- While Harvey originally went off the deep end at one point, I gradually became more rational, collected... open... understanding (Yes, yes, still can be p****d off at times -- but much more reasonable and FASTER to "cool off" then way back when 😂). Thank goodness for that character and the addictive fun/grievances of duality (y'know, once you begin judging things by that concept you can recognise it practically EVERYWHERE..! But that helped understanding). Well, "One day, robin will FLY again" (umm, inside joke, he's my actual namesake 😅)

Something that struck me like a cord in Batman Arkham Knight, was the dialogue between Batman and Two-Face you get if you arrest Two-Face AFTER the main storyline. I can’t remember it word for word, but Two-Face is in shock that Batman and Bruce are the same person, and when he asks if it’s true, Harvey’s voice sounds shaky. Bruce pauses before answering, and simply says he’s sorry.

Two-Face was always my favorite. I still have a (quite poorly drawn) picture I made of him when I was 8! I redrew a better version of it recently after I found it looking through my old drawings. I even have a character that I made up that's really similar to Two-Face, but I wasn't thinking about him when I made up the character. He was a soldier named Ulrich who had half his face disfigured by gas in WW1. His girlfriend Rosamina was horrified upon seeing his face when he came home from the war, and she left him. Ulrich became depressed because of this, and turned evil. Years later Rosamina returned upon hearing Ulrich was imprisoned for life (due to war crimes in WW2.)

Two Face is one of very few villains I almost root for. Lived his life fighting corruption just to have it blow up in his face (no pun intended) with existing emotional instabilities leading him to go against the very system he served and failed him. Most of the people he targeted were the scum he tried prosecute giving them the justice the authorities couldn't in a more satisfying way. In the animated series, the real antagonist was Rupert Thorne.
