Dagger is the opposite of Bruce Wayne much more than other powerful people, Bruce will do anything within his power to help improve Gotham, even if it gets him in trouble, while Daggett makes Gotham a much worse place by oppressing those he has power over, while cowering or just walking away as soon as the heat is slightly on him, Daggett is everything Bruce strives to be the opposite, thus it is no wonder his intro episode is him framing Bruce.

That is by design. The show wants you to sympathize with the weird, the deranged, the maladaptive the other by making them sympathetic. Pushing the narrative that criminality is just a result of circumstances and or poverty and not the person being a c*nt with low impulse control and other maladaptive behaviors in the first place. (I don't think i have to explain that this narrative is extremely classist, shows that the writers are out of touch and at the same time obsolves the criminal of any fault, it's extremely subversive and stops actual solutions from being discussed) Granted episodes like this in the video show that people can just be aholes, funny tho this only appears for the upperclasses tho as if somehow it's impossible for the same thing to happen if you are poor.

I think that the reason why the writters used so much greedy rich villains is because of the censourship that didn't allow them to portray public corruption or government autority figures as villains, so they used the closer thing they could imagine as a substitute for the realistic evil that makes Gotham in to the criminal nightmare we see in the comics.

@@SerumLake I must say I HEAVILY disagree with your tangent on the dream sequence. I mean really, calling it propaganda? That doesn't make any sense. It was clearly about Bruce's struggle with the fact that he isnt able to save everyone no matter what he does. You contradict yourself saying this after you just said the writers had contempt for the wealthy, if that's true then why would they insinuate a rightwing belief in a sympathetic light? Also you're making a lot of assumptions when you said that Bruce was thoughtless moving the company to Gotham would take away the jobs of the city it was originally in. Don't you think someone as smart as him would research the possible affects before actually going through with such a plan? You do realize it's entirely possible that Gotham is FAR worse off economically that city where the company originally was right?
@SerumLake
@SerumLake 9 ай бұрын
@@rogerkeleshian2215Both assessments of the dream can be true, there’s no contradiction there. Bruce Timm added that dream sequence and stated that handing out money is just a band aid, and does nothing to solve homelessness. What he meant was that you need to do more than just give out money, however the right wing talking point is that there should be no handouts, or any kind of financial support. Just check out the comments on the video I did about Bruce Wayne being an idealised billionaire for right wingers reclaiming that scene. Edit: re: poverty shuffling, that’s exactly what happens in the real world when industries close down and either go out of business or move to cheaper locations. Look at cities like Detroit that once had a thriving car manufacturing industry. Bruce Wayne openly says that he only cares about bringing jobs to Gotham.
@rogerkeleshian2215
@rogerkeleshian2215 9 ай бұрын
@SerumLake What happened on Detroit was far larger in scale of industry loss than that of one single company. Be that as it may, it's just so out of character for bruce to be so inconsiderate. Obviously, he cares about his home city primarily, but I for some reason doubt he has this ends justify the means attitude about it. I mean, later on we all know he joined the league so wouldn't that be costing him time in Gotham while he's away? Probably not because he likely allocates his time efficiently and picks and chooses when it's safe to help elsewhere.
@rogerkeleshian2215
@rogerkeleshian2215 9 ай бұрын
@SerumLake As for the first point, there's still no implication of a right propaganda in that scene, as the audience isn't moved to think giving money is inherently useless, only that Bruce himself will never have enough. After I watched that scene as a kid, my first immediate thoughts weren't "Hey, look! Bruce Wayne is proving that giving money to the poor is useless" It was "Wow this is poignantly symbolic if not literally metaphoric of Bruce's efforts to save everyone although technically impossible, but the fact that he tries so hard is noble of him".

Villains like Daggot are a great reminder of way Bruce became Batman. Ideally, Bruce would be able to solve most of Gotham’s problems without becoming Batman. But with people like dagget influencing the system so heavily, Batman needs to go outside of the law in order to stop him. The thing I love about Roland Dagget is that he is a deconstruction of the "Crooked Businessman Who Indulges In Villainy To Make More Money" we got in kids shows in the '90's: The schemes are so impractical that they cost him a fortune, his reputation is ruined when his crimes are revealed, he ends up goin' broke from legal fees, he is stuck workin' out of one of his shuttered businesses, and he ends up in prison due to no longer bein' able to afford his expensive lawyers.

The way Daggett talks about the residents sort of reminds me of how the US government and media has talked about the people in Gaza. It’s so grossly dehumanising it makes my skin crawl, “died” “a 5 year old woman”. And what makes it worse is that both Daggett and the Politicians benefit from the suffering of the people they are dehumanising. What makes some of Batman’s villains so powerful is that they reflect a part of real life, whether it be the horrors of the entertainment industry with Baby Doll or the disgusting entitlement of incels with the Mad Hatter. And what’s more realistic than a rich white man benefiting from the subjugation of poor minorities?

I saw the handouts part of the dream sequence akin to Bruce realizing that he can't just throw money at this problem. He is saddened as it dawns on him that these downtrodden are in this position because of a neglectful system that leaves him wondering if he can do more. Giving them some money might help now, but unless he does something to provide stability, these people will just end up right back where they are sooner than later.

Roland Daggett reminded me a lot of Lex Luthor and Kingpin, someone you knew was a criminal but you couldn't prove it and was always a master of covering his tracks. He was a cool throwback to the old retro villains that you used to see in the old 1930s gangster movies and while he wasn't an evil madman like The Joker, he represented a different kind of evil: corporate. Daggett was a very wealthy guy who throws a lot of weight and commands a lot of influence in the criminal underworld but always got everyone to do his dirty work. He's not a villain you physically throw down with, Batman has to find ways to outsmart him and hopefully catch him out. I wished he made more apperances in the show as i would have loved to seen him eventually get his comeuppance

Honestly, I'd love it if The Batman 2 continued to throw shade at the elite. Like, if the villain is Mr. Freeze, they should make it clear that Mr. Freeze is the sympathetic villain who can be reasoned with, even though it would be hard, and he has understandable motivations, wanting to save his dying wife. And Mr. Boyle is the vile villain, the man with the heart of ice, who uses his philanthropy to improve his image, but in reality, he is willing to let a woman die if that would save him a few pretty pennies.

Roland Daggett's use as a way to showcase corruption in the show was quite effective and hycertainly wasn't the only culprit but having him be a recurring figure coupled with Ed Asner's great performance is what made Daggett much more memorable than other culprits with similar roles. Was it surface level, yeah quite a bit, but it's better than some other shows at the time did when it came to their themes. Speaking of other examples of corruption, there are quite a few examples like Ferris Boyle, Derek Powers, Penguin (in TNBA), Lex Luthor (my favourite) and so on, but the one instance where I felt it actually detracted from an already existing character and made his story less interesting is Daniel Mockridge with Riddler (sidenote I'll always say Nigma with an I). I felt that having Riddler's origin be that he became the Riddler for revenge because he was tricked not as compelling for the character as him becoming Riddler because he needed to prove his intellect and superiority and found normal life dull. It's still present through his dialogue but it's not as prominent until "Riddler's Reform" and even then I wouldn't say it's too focused on. True, Mockridge doesn't appear again but the effects of the episode he appeared in are still very prevalent in "What Is Reality " and I would just have rather they had moved on. It's one of quite a few issues with the DCAU Riddler which you would know since you made a video about him. I think The Batman 2004 handled the approach of him becoming Riddler for revenge in a much more interesting way as it showed that he was always this obsessed and the revenge was just an excuse he used for himself. I've said it before but my favourite adaptation and portrayal of the Riddler is the one voiced by Wally Wingert.

You know, there's a funny thing about being called a socialist for understanding or creating works that critique capitalism and the people who exploit those having to live under it. Mostly because no one either bothers to ask for a socialist interpretation of works like Batman/Superman, or there's no one there to give their thoughts. For one, if someone urges everyone to make a clear reference to the moral characters of those exploiting people under it, either making them outright villains or seeing their actions as bad, only because they're rotten to the core Godfather-style individuals who go out of their way to actively, knowingly, and with clear intent, commit evil in everything they do to turn a profit, in other words, moralizing that character and their actions as bad or not, then you get interpretations of 'extreme industrialization' or 'bad faith/crony/corporatist capitalism'. Words that don't really make any sense or have no clear definition. It further more doesn't encourage any real criticism of the system itself. That's also why stories like these have characters like Bruce Wayne. A billionaire from an old money family who manages to maintain his wealth regardless on how expensive the amount of charities, projects, fundraisers, jobs he opens, and wages he raises. He's just a good, solid character who restores faith in the system through reform, regardless on whether or not these projects are sustainable for him, his business, or the people of Gotham. And whether he gets something out of it that's beyond just helping the people of Gotham (which he clearly cares about), isn't really up for debate. Nor do these stories encourage thinking beyond that. However, when you see these consequences as inevitable because of the system they're allowed to flourish in, regardless of whether or not they're good people in power (The Waynes, etc.,) and you analyze the downsides of it as an inconsolable feature rather than a bug in the system led by extraordinarily bad apples, only then are you (more or less) on the path to being a socialist lol. Or at least having a socialist interpretation of these stories.

Hands won't help everyone since that may make them greedy and demanding so that's something I disagree on. The better option which we do see Batman do is getting them a stable job so they can earn the livable wage instead of just handing them money and expecting them to use it to fix themselves.

Does anyone else I was thinking in Romans first appearance he basically could be seen as a metaphor for plastic surgery in his first appearance. He is offering it to someone who would need facial reconstruction surgery and then he’s planning it to sell it to the vein which is what plastic surgery has become in the mind of most people and I think, even in Japan at one point plastic surgery did cost money and that does have public healthcare

Daggett is just too one-dimensional for my tastes. Like Boyle in Heart of Ice, he’s just meant to be a character that kids will realize is a villain even though he doesn’t rob or punch anyone.

Well like I said that both Roland Dagget and Boss Biggis are people that should never be alive and I wonder that Dagget should have been in Mystery of the Batwoman were he teams up with Penguin, Throne, Carlton and Bane Glad you added the Dark knight Rises there as I think they change his name to John instead of Roland because of how it sounds like Nolan and that would have used Roland during Bruce’s final years before retiring and that in my Head canon that Bruce did married Selina.

its weird how little dagget appeared in later seasons as his early appearances made it seem he'd be one of the BIG villains of the show, the face of "legitimate" criminals in our society who abuse their positions of power. Instead a lot of his comeuppance happened offscreen and is jsut implied after catwoman and batgirl defeat him.

Hmm. WB copyright claims the video talking about how the stand in for the rich industrialists abusing people for money is the most despicable villain in the series. One could almost think that they were . . . offended by it? Nah, I'm sure it's coincidence. Also, I want to apologize for the outburst in the original video. Without the context of what was going on in my head, that might have seemed a little strange. Of course, if it had been an actual psychotic episode, context probably would have been irrelevant because it wouldn't have been any more sensible. Fortunately, that was not an episode, or at least not a psychotic one. It was just a case of what psychologists call "catastrophic thinking," an anxiety induced state of panic where one leaps to irrational worst-case scenarios. I'll leave the full details for therapy, but to sum up briefly, because that stupid capitalist vs. socialist argument was adjacent to an actual episode I went through in 2017, the fact that I brought it up again in a context where it wasn't actually that relevant brought memories back and . . . well, you can imagine why that panicked me. And in that panicked state, my brain was racing too fast for me to use standard coping mechanisms, such as reminding myself to think in the first person in order to avoid depersonalizing my thoughts. Fortunately, I have arrangements with my family to check in on me regularly in case things like this happen, so I had help to work through it, though it did take time for me to calm down enough that I could visit KZbin again. So much stress over nothing, but at least no harm done. Aside from the embarrassment. Anyway, thanks for your understanding.

Gotta love how, years later, Dr. Milo would finally get his comeuppance for his own role in Daggett's schemes when Doomsday squashed him like a bug. The DCAU never once allowed the truly evil characters to get away scot-free, even if it took nearly a decade to punish them.

The thing is while you could see that making villains out of the super rich is some politics thing. from making a working story its just order to have a powerful villain you need someone with power, which money is. Homeless lex luthor isn't much of a threat to superman, mabey he can threaten some people on a subway and repeatly but not much else. What makes dagot more evil is how he is in industry that are often totally normal but manages to be a supervillian, wants to build things, plants bombs all around a bunch of ghettos. Lex luthor on the other hand in his first plot was involved with a weapons system which is easy to cause evil. The authors defiantly might have made daggot the way he is as a ideological thing but... at the core of it, villains needs some kind of power to work.
