You know who saw this and emulated a lot of these stylistic ticks? Norm Breyfogle...

More Von Eeden and Varley, please! As a boy, I discovered Von Eeden through back issues purchased at flea markets: Dial H for Hero, Batman, World’s Finest, Green Arrow, Batman and the Outsiders... His art was a thrilling breath of fresh air and, with such a last name, I was sure Von Eeden was European. Always enjoy the man’s artwork. Thanks, guys

Really glad you guys are diving back into Von Eeden. I can't speak for other fans from the 1980s, but when these comics were appearing I had mostly shifted to alternative comics (Weirdo, Love & Rockets) but still kept an eye on a few mainstream artists: Miller, Chaykin and Von Eeden. I always thought the tragedy of Von Eeden's career was that the collaboration with Fleming in Thriller didn't quite jell and fell apart. If Thriller had lived up to its potential, if DC gave Fleming and Von Eeden the support they needed, it could have ranked with Dark Knight Returns and Watchmen.

This comic was so completely out there at the time it appeared. Trevor Von Eeden and Bill S ( and Tony Salmons ) were really playing with comics language. Almost playing with fire I would imagine. As a kid it was so refreshing to come across this stuff as it arrived.

I loved his work when he first showed up in comics, it was so different than everything else at DC.

Hey, that #305 is a David Anthony Kraft script I've never read, too! I must look that up! The art looks very cool.

Von Eeden was really making a splash with this dynamic new style in this period with Batman Annual 8 and the Green Arrow miniseries, along with Thriller at the end of ‘83 (all of which I remember buying new). Over the years, I’ve whittled down by Worlds Finest run and this is one of the only post Dollar Comic WF issues I still own.

I was a fan that was reading World's Finest at the time and was just blown away by this Von Eeden stuff and I was shocked by how few people were paying attention. I was grabbing everything he was doing but he never did that one great thing I always hoped DC or Marvel would put him on. His Green Arrow was sharp as hell, though. Lynn Varley colored 165 of X-Men with some nice Paul Smith art.

Would love to see you guys cover Thriller at some point. That was a flea market find as a teen that really pointed to a not strictly super hero idea of what mainstream comics could be.

Did you guys know that Mark Buckingham has completely redrawn Miracle Man Silver Age 1&2 so that they link up better style wise with the long awaited issue 3? Thought it would make a interesting video for you to look at the originals and the redrawn versions side by side when they come out.

Hidden gem issues like this that have never been collected, are why DC badly needs a line like Marvel's Epic Collections.

If you can find it, you guys should check out Thriller, which had some great Von Eeden art.

This video is my first exposure to Trevor Von Eeden. He blew my mind. I love that sort of wild creativity that expands the artform.

Just picked a comic you might want to review: Avengers annual 15 from 1986. Steve Ditko breakdowns with Klaus Janson finishes. Craziest Captain America I've ever seen

My opinion, Trevor's works in this comic looks like Alex Toth and Alan Davis (his work on Detective Comics). I know you talked about Trevor's inspiration from Neal Adams. Alan Davis has said that he was inspired Neal. Also. You talked about Trevor's untrained camera angles. I think that's definitely like Alan Davis composition. Your thoughts?

I still believe Trevor Von Eeden 's best work was an issue of Batman and the Outsiders #14 . I think.

Thank you, I was going to see if happen to have the issues afterwards. Save me a dive into my long boxes and probably coming up short on the issue.

Anybody else catching a little bit of Klaus Janson in those super angular faces and bodies, especially some of those Batman faces? Are they contemporaries, or was Von Eeden already in the game a little before Klaus?

I always assumed that Von Eeden saw Mazzuchellis Batman Year One and changed his style in that direction, compared to his earlier work.

Always liked his stuff even as a kid in the 80’s. I see a bit of Gene Colan influence in the layout style.

Von Eeden is simply amazing. If DC were smart, they'd issue collections of his World's Finest, Batman and the Outsiders, Thriler, and Green Arrow work. Blew my mind as a kid, and I never understood why I didn't see more of him. I saw him at a con a couple years ago, and he said he was working on something for Fantagraphics. I wonder what that project will look like.
