Hi, I am using the Hobbyking Life battery in my Taranis. I just replaced the 2 pole connector with the one from the original battery. I put a little bit of hotglue on the connection between the Taranis and the battery to keep it safely in place. I can now charge the life battery through the balancer and the servo connector. No unpluging needed. Only open the cover. Works like a charm.

One of the reasons why they included a NiMh battery, as opposed to a LiPo is shipping. It would've complicated the shipping from overseas due to the restrictions on sending LiPo batteries.

Hey Bruce! I wished you had done this video a little bit early. I was so desperate looking for a battery replacement for my Taranis and I saw someone using a Turnigy nano-tech 2100mAh 3S1P 20~40C LiFePo4 Transmitter Pack on KZbin. So I bought the same hoping it would be a perfect fit for the Transmitter. Well, it does fit in if you remove the piece of rubber on the battery lid, but still it's a very very tight fit which I wasn't so comfortable having installed. So now I've got 2 HobbyKing 1500mAH LiFe 3S 9.9v Transmitter packs with DIY connectors to fit the Taranis. Now I always have a fully charged extra pack on my Transmitter box. I think this is the perfect battery for the Taranis and a this pack lasts a very long time. And about the Low voltage alarm for 3 Cell LiFe pack on a Transmitter, I think it should be 9.5V. As we all know the measured voltage depend on the current being drawn, and a transmitter would draw a very low current during it's operation. So a battery pack on a Transmitter would have a lower voltage drop compared to a power hungry RC model. So it we get to read a little high voltage even if the Transmitter had drawn most of it's power. And these LiFe packs has very sharp drop curve once it's fully consumed. So to be on the safe side, and to have a well balanced pack, I think the low voltage alarm should be something around 9.5V. Please do correct me if I'm wrong. :)

My Taranis is finally on it's way from HK after nearly a month on backorder. I ordered from BG but they kept cancelling my order because it had been backorder too long. I have used a LiFe 1800 battery in my 9x but I killed it by forgetting to turn it off so I ordered a 9xr one because it has low voltage protection. Bruce, in one of the previous Taranis videos you mentioned that it was possible to plug in the battery backwards and short the radio out. On my Hitec Aurora 9 I solved that with my labeler by sticking a large 'R' label inside my battery compartment next to the positive terminal. Now I never have to guess which way to plug in my Tx battery. A strip of red tape would also work, as long as it's sticky enough not to fall off. Cleaning the battery compartment first with rubbing alcohol where you want the tape to be would help it stick.

If I'm going to always be near an outlet, could use a 12v power supply and put a connector on it to not have a battery? What would the specs of the supply need to be? I assume a 12v and 260mA (or anything under .5mA) would be fine?
@pressalltheknobs32779 жыл бұрын
Roger Smith I don't recommend it. You can't use the charging socket since its designed to work with the power off and not to charge the battery while running the radio at the same time. This means you would have to plug in the DC power supply where the battery plugs in which is not very robust or convenient. As to the power supply, although Bruce says a 12v nominal battery works it will make the regulators work harder. For continuous DC operation you would probably want to keep it nearer the designed 7.2v. As to amps there is no given spec but based on the estimate that 800mAh lasts around 2hrs you will need at least a 400mA. However, NiMH batteries can provide several amps so the peak current draw of the TX may be quite a bit more than 400mA. It's probably unlikely that the peak draw is that high but it's hard to know for sure without doing some measurements. Another problem is that your bog standard wall wart DC power supply can be quite noisy, electrically, and that can be quite upsetting to sensitive radio equipment. Batteries supply very clean power and this TX was designed to work of a battery. You would want to choose a power supply that was well filtered. That all said it probably depends on what you plan on doing with the TX while you have it powered this way. If you are controlling a computer flight simulator then you could just try it out with something you have in a box somewhere but if you are flying 1/4 scale turbine jets then you might want to be a bit more careful.

i need some advice, bruce. i have an older futaba 8ch radio running a 433 lrs module, and i would like to eliminate the on board battery altogether, and use the fpv ground station power which is 12v and sometimes up to 14 v when i am running the car engine, as it's run off my car battery. sometimes i run the car engine while on long flights to keep the batt up. alternator charges at up to 14 v as you know. i need a voltage regulator, of some sort. not sure what to get, and haven't seen anything on the market. this will also eliminate the possibility of a transmitter batt failure on my by now very expensive fpv plane. see my latest video to see the plane. oh, and yea, the futaba runs on 9.6v. although, when fully charged, the batt is sometimes as high as 11.1v. nickel metal hydride. i actually wnat ot do it to both transmitters, and both lrs. i have a immersion rc,lrs, and a dragonlink v2. thanks bruce. if you have any ideas, let me know. it would seem like a simple matter to step the volts down, but i am having trouble finding a way. regards,spike

I'm just rendering up a video on BECs and I'll do another on variable voltage boost/buck regulators. What's that? It's a regulator that will deliver a constant voltage on the output regardless of what voltage is applied to the input. For example, you can get 9.6V out even when the input voltage varies from 3V through to 20V. These boost-buck regulators are "cheap as beans" and allow you to use almost any power source for your RC gear and/or UHF transmitter. Stay tuned!

Correct me if im wrong but whatever voltage battery you choose is the voltage you get from the pins on the back of the radio where you update your RX firmware, so if you choose say an 11v battery and your RX only allows up to 10v you could fry it when you connect it to the 3 pins.

Thanks Bruce. My preference is for a larger capacity 6 cell low self-discharge NiMH pack. Frsky make one that is quite cheap. It enables use of the built in charger and is more convenient for me, as I don't like having to remove the battery cover each time I want to charge.
@xjet11 жыл бұрын
The only problem with the NiMH option is that the inbuilt charger has a relatively low charge rate so if you're in a hurry to go flying and have a low battery -- you're going to have to wait -- or use the external charger anyway. However, high-capacity LSD NiMH is certainly a valid option -- but oddly enough, such batteries usually cost more than the lithium equivalent.

It's worth pointing out that the Taranis Plus now ships with a 7.2v 2200 mAh NiMH battery which has plenty of life, is very safe and so reduces the advantages of making this change. A LiFe might be a bit lighter, charge faster and hold its charge better during storage but at the cost of having buy a new battery, possibly a new charger, modify the battery and have to take the battery out of the TX to charge it. Probably not worth doing at least until the original battery stops taking charge.

Definately have to agree I own a plus and the battery gives me a lot of fly time. I'm never away from my taranis for more than a day so self discharge is not even a worry for me. I may however switch when the included battery doesn't hold its charge as well.

I am just pondering upgrading the NiMh cells with LSD and 2000mah. These cells are rated to 1500 charge/discharge cycles. I can still use the built in charger circuit which reduces the number of times the back cover is removed. It also reduces the likelihood that I will damage or wear out the compression fit of the battery cover. Other accounts online say that higher capacity 6-cell NimH packs still get 12-15 hours of on time. With the higher cycle count cells I should still get 9-12 hours. I think the only thing I loose is the ability to quick charge; a trade off I am willing to make.

Or just another possibility; U could use the "DIY $8 Lithium Transmitter Battery", 2 x Trustfire 2400mah &+ hardcase lipos, those don't puff. The trick U showed us Bruce, i use Trustfire 2500mah on my 9x and i feel its very efficient & safe. A charge lasts forever. S if U got the same kinda space, looks like U do U can use 3s 2200mah lipos.

Bruce!!! This video is out of date and should really be updated or just taken down. New Taranis now comes with a 2000mAH low self discharge battery and has done for some time now I believe. I've just bought a Taranis and thanks to this video I've wasted a few pounds on a LIFE and wasted a bit of time soldering connections for it. No big deal - but this video is no longer helpful.

My FrSKY Taranis -Plus came with a 2000mah battery. I guess the old ones came with the 800mah.

I have a Taranis (not Plus) that already came with the 2Kmah battery. I guess it was just the first batch of Taranis that came with the 800mah bat.

Hi, I need some help. I just bought my frsky taranis and im having some trouble with the ESC. Its a 30 A turnigy plus. It gets warm when i conect the lipo. Im not using the motor, I was tring some servos and it gets warm. Anyone can help? thanks
@privateagent7 жыл бұрын
It's because you have or a faulty servo, or a bad connection. Happens to me too when I don't correctly plug the red and black wires
@BelperFlyer11 жыл бұрын
Whatever you do don't be tempted to charge a NMh battery through the built-in charge socket using an 'intelligent' charger. You must use the supplied crude 12 DC wall charger or something similar. I made that mistake and had to replace a MOSFET on the main board. Not something anyone wishes to do! I've made up a so-called 'Instant' 2500 mAH NMh pack for my Taranis. I made an adapter for which converts the connector to a standard servo type and always charge externally using my Graupner Ultramat 16. It lasts ages between charges Lots of ways of skinning this Taranis cat.

use pin to unplug pins from NiMH connector then, plug in to Lithium battery's unplugged wire to the connector. Done.

4:15 you claim you can just plug in the balance connector and off you go ??? Really ? Using the balance connector for discharge will In this case give you the nominal voltage of one cell. Note that the middle pin in the Taranis receptacle is blanked. No good idea!
@ColdestLivewire7 жыл бұрын
the middle pin on a 2s is both cell #1 + and cell #2 -, the outer pins are at the same voltage potential as the discharge lead

I've yet to recharge my HK Life battery (as shown here).....Turnigy 9x indicates 9.4/9.3v). Looks like it'll hold a charge like the Apollo Lunar package did! Bring on Thorium Chemistry!

I´d recommend, in matter of long flight hours, go for two lithium mangan cells (*KeepPower IMR 26650 - 5,2Amps*). Solder two in a pack (7,4v) with balancer leads and fitting plugs. Put it in a fitting shrink or good value tape, there you go. Up to *_40hrs_* of flight time wihtout any charging :-) (5,2A / 0,13A) The Taranis+ (plus!) consumes meassured arround 130mAh , but i guess the old Taranis is similar. The batteries: www.candlepowerforums.com/vb/showthread.php?387664-Test-Review-of-Keeppower-IMR26650-5200mAh-%28Black%29-2014 To fit the 26650 battery pack into the Taranis, there is a really nice fitting 3Dprint from Christophe Bernardi @thingiverse, which I use. It works & fits pretty well! www.thingiverse.com/make:101704#comment-523136 It also provides a better stand on the desk, if an extention module in the bay is used, like orange modules which intent to have the stupid antenna going out the backside, were the taranis usually would lay on :-) In conclusion i can stay hours over hours in duty with the taranis even if I use it as an joystick interface for my (www.x-plane.com) simulator copter models: github.com/opentx/opentx/wiki/OpenTX-USB-Joystick Thumbs up @Bruce!! I enjoy your videos. Happy Landings !¡

What I'd really like to see is a battery that would offer maximum capacity while still utilizing the built-in recharging system, where you could enjoy the convenience of plugging in the charger from the outside, just as it's designed to do! I hate having to open the hatch, unplug the battery & remove it, then reinstall everything just to recharge - with every cycle producing wear-&-tear on those tiny wires, connector & receptacle. For such a brilliant concept as the Taranis/FrSky system is supposed to be, I wish there had been more forethought given to its battery system design - perhaps with greater flexibility for the various batteries that could be used, and their maintenance. And added component cost should not be an argument, as relatively cheap as it is now, & the number of people already willingly paying $1K & upwards for "high end" Tx's. For something so 'revolutionary', the battery system is like the revolution is hauling around a battleship anchor.

Taranis has been shipping with a 2000mAhr LSD NiMh battery and higher capacity charging circuit for a while! Much the best for a consumer radio choice. No worries leaving it on accidentally - a NiMh will recover - Li not! Good to mention the 1-5C rating of transmitter Li chemistry batteries.
@xjet11 жыл бұрын
Fortunately the Taranis has an inactivity alarm built into it which means the chances of leaving the radio on to the extent that the battery goes flat is minimal. I used to be a strong NiMH fan but since I started retrofitting my transmitters with LiFe batteries I haven't looked back.

***** Only if you can hear it! In the garage, in the boot, in the drawer,,, one day every one gets a flat battery.
@sloperdude11 жыл бұрын
Wayne, the problem with NiMH batteries is that you constantly have to recharge them, since they self discharge. I can only fly slope gliders when the wind is blowing in the right direction and the lift is strong enough. That means my batteries may sit for weeks until the wind gods align, and many times I've had to fast charge my NiMH packs on the way to the slope site. When I do that the charge doesn't last as long, and I end up charging more packs while I'm flying. I did alleviate this somewhat with a six port NiMH slow charger that switches to a maintenance charge when the batteries are fully charged, so I can leave them on indefinitely. Still, lithium packs are less of a hassle.
@waynerussell640111 жыл бұрын
sloperdude The Taranis batteries use the LSD "low self discharge": chemistry that is similar to Li with up to 85% charge retention in one year. LSD gives up some to maximum capacity. Standard NiMh can be left on a cheap household timer to trickle charge for a few minutes a day for constant readiness.
