Battery Replacement Tutorial on a Garmin Nuvi 2597, 2597LM, 2597LMT, 2595LMT GPS Navigation System

The tools needed are a T5 Star Shaped Screw Driver and a Flat Screw Driver.

My garmin nuvi 2599 looks the same inside the case, the only differences are it doesn't have a silver strip at the bottom of the screen, and the power button is on the back of the case. The original battery on my nuvi 2599 won't hold charge, and is refusing to to start/boot up. It's a 820 mah. So I've ordered an 1100 mah. The old battery was 8 years old, and was working fine, until I downloaded an update, that's when everything started to go wrong. Your videos are very informative, which I find very helpful. Your videos are top notch! The videos are clear as are the instructions, thank you. You mention your screwdriver is magnetized, I put a small earth magnet onto the driver’s shaft which guarantees you don’t drop or lose those tiny screws. I fly the Typhoon H drone and have had to repair it, tiny screws are no fun trying to find once in the couch or underneath it!

Thanks for the reply. I did replace the battery in my 2595LMT as per your video. Also bought the charging cable you featured. With the 2595 plugged into my laptop to charge, shows "charging" with the voltage at 3.95V, batt current at 498mA. When I unplug the cable the Batt capacity shows around 60 to 65 and 0mA for the batt current. BL % DC is 80. Within less than five minutes the Batt Capacity shows 53 to 56 and Batt Voltage at 3.72V. I will try a few charging cycles to see if I can get the battery above 90%. I'll try the 2595LMT in my car to see if it performs normally. Prior to buying this used 2595LMT, I had a Garmin Nuvi 40 on the same cable on my BMW for at least four years with no issues at all. The Nuvi would power up when the bike was started and would run 100% of the time the bike was running. But about a year ago the Nuvi 40 would constantly cycle on and off, showing low battery status. So I replaced it with the 2595LMT. But the 2595LMT did the same thing shortly after I started using it.

The current from a Laptop USB Port may not be as high as 2.5A which is required if the GPS is ON while charging. So I recommend that you charge it from an independent USB plug supporting 2.5A or even 2.0A is OK. If you have no available 2.5A USB port then turn the GPS OFF while it's being charge with the laptop.

Hi Khalid. Thanks for the video, I just replaced the battery in my 2597LMT Garmin. However, when I plug it in with the Garmin power cable on my motorcycle it shows the charging symbol briefly and then does not continue charging. I moved it to my car and plugged it in. The battery status screen shows it charging now, but initially it also briefly charged and then went to shut off. Now out of my car it shows Batt Capacity from 51 to 55, Batt Voltage at 3.70v, Battery at Ok Cap. I wonder if I have a power cable issue on my motorcycle.

Hi, so there could one of these two issues. 1. the cable that you are using on your Motorcycle may be defective. 2. The USB Port on your Motorcycle may not support 2.5A it might be only a 1.5A USB port. This particular Garmin requires a 5V 2.0 Amp or higher power source.

hi khalid, great video, thanks, I have a problem with a Zumo 660 and you can probably guide me, after installing a gpx file in the gpx folder under the main garmin folder, the unit turns off, this happens after turning it on when the boot cycle is running, the same thing happens when I connect it to a computer, I have not found how to access the internal directory of folders to delete that gpx file that I assume is causing it to turn off, I will appreciate any help or recommendation, thank you very much.

@@TECHNOLOGYTIPS101 thank you very much, but I think I did not explain myself well, the problem is that the computer does not detect the GPS, it resets itself during the boot cycle and does not allow me to connect it to a computer or start itself, it seems that during the boot cycle something happens internally that forces it to start the boot cycle again and again.

@@gmaniaux Try a different USB cable the cable could be damaged. Also, the USB port on the GPS could have broken solder joints which require re-soldering. In rare cases, it could also be a corrupt firmware that requires a firmware refresh using the Pre-Boot method.

I have the garmin nuvi 2597lmt and about 5 other random garmin units and I like the 2597 the best. Since it is hard to get actual OEM replacement batteries, is there a certain brand of aftermarket batteries that you have had good experiences with for longevity? Thank you in advance.

Although no aftermarket brand is as good as the original OEM battery, the CS ( Cameron Sino ) brand is as good as a generic battery can be.

At first you said the battery current should be 500 plus mA but at the end it's under 100mA and you are not expecting it to go higher because of a new battery. I am so confused.

The current depends on the charge status of the battery. For example when you get the new battery if it arrives empty the charging current will be 500mA but if the battery arrives fully charged it will be almost zero. Once you drain the battery by running the GPS on the new battery only without any external power, then charging it will show 500mA

Wondering whether you've updated your 2597LMT to 2025.10 map. There's no issue with 2597LMT V3, but 2597LMT V5 is giving me "Can't unlock map" error, while there's no issue with 2024.20 map. Garmin told me to buy a new Garmin GPS.

You don’t necessarily have to buy a new Garmin. All you need to do is downgrade the firmware. This is a trick Garmin is using to force people into buying new models and I’m not too impressed with this corporate greed.

The battery drops rapidly because it’s not the genuine garmin battery but rather a aftermarket like a China replacement

Unfortunately we have no choice, Garmin doesn't want people to take them apart and repair them. They want people to send them to a Garmin Authorized dealer for repairs. So they don't sell spare parts including batteries to consumers. I tried to contact them and I was unsuccessful.

I have a GARMIN NUVI 255W and I dont remember the 4 Digit PIN. I've tried to RESET the Device by placing the Thumb at the Right Side of the Bottom Screen - When I turn on the Device - It does Prompt and shows - Do you want to ERASE All User Data. I select YES - And the Device RE-BOOTS but then asks me for the PIN again. It also tells me that if I move to the SECURITY Location - The Device will UNLOCK itself. And that too never happens - Can you please tell me - If there is a Solution to this? Thank You Kindly.

Hi, you need to plug in the GPS to external power and wait at the security location for long enough so that it acquires satellite signals, only then it will Auto Unlock.

@@nadeemjanjua8323 If the GPS has a full satellite signal and it is still not unlocking, it means that the security PIN was not created at that spot. Try at a different corner of your house or office, preferably outside the building so that you can get full satellite signal strength.
