@sdroy84agt
@sdroy84agt Жыл бұрын
Moreover, India play on green tops at home vs BD and Afg. It's team based strategy. Also, getting low bounce pitches which spin to reduce Lyon's effectiveness is also strategy. If Pujara and Kohli's form didn't fall away after the pandemic started then India would have dominated test cricket a lot more. Also, continuous injuries to their fast bowlers esp. Bumrah isn't helping them. The main reason for the dominance in Asia is this. Ash, Jaddu, Axar and the improved Kuldeep are among the top 5-7 red ball spinners in the world. Plus, Jadeja is a No. 6 in Asia and Axar and Ashwin are proper No. 7s in Asia. That makes the batting lineup till No. 9. We know it's easier facing spin vs the softer ball and tired spinners. So, Ash, Jadeja and improved Axar (in terms of his batting in last 6-8 months) have made merry and been the difference between the teams in both batting and bowling. Another reason for the dominance (which I forgot to mention), is in Shami and Umesh India has had 2 skiddy fast bowlers who are perfect for low bounce Asian pitches. Shami's SR in Asia is similar to the best in Asia : Steyn, Marshall and Waqar, all similar sort of fast and skiddy bowlers. Even though Shami isn't as accurate as them he is still as effective as them when used in short spells to break partnerships.

Hi @JarrodKimber, there's two more aspects to this: 1. DRS: The introduction of DRS has many that batsmen can't use their pads as defence as much. Harbhajan and Kumble didn't have that which is a huge disadvantage. 2. Globally, real defensive techniques have dropped off a cliff since T20. Let me illustrate with some examples: a. In SENA countries, the duck and weave technique is considered a sign of weakness, either you play a pull or hook, or you defend with a straight bat over the level of the stumps or try and fend off the ball. That is some crazy coaching. 2. Since T20 and better bats have made it easier for batsmen to hit spinners in a stand and deliver fashion, going down the pitch and smothering the spin, has become almost a lost art. When I was young, batsmen were taught to go down the pitch and defend too, just killing the ball. That way you don't care about low bounce. But modern coaches and batsmen know better I guess.
@SajalKr
@SajalKr Жыл бұрын
I honestly feel DRS advantage for bowlers is a little over stated. Bowlers earlier also had wrong decisions going in their favour that batsmen could do nothing about.
@porusmehta2807
@porusmehta2807 Жыл бұрын
@@SajalKr Yes but it was a 50-50 thing and was pretty inconsistent. Nowadays umpires are looking at the DRS results and giving marginal LBW decisions out like those hitting the top of the bails or the outside half of the leg stump. That never happened pre-2010. The rules have evolved to allow for that. I don't know how old you are, maybe you wouldn't remeber, but in the 1990s, Jimmy Adams used his pads coming on to the front foot, almost hid the bat and negated the LBW. He was called Jimmy Padams in that series. That sort of technique would be almost impossible today. Imagine you try and play a shot on the off-side to an off spinner and you miss it, the ball clips your pad marginally in line with the off stump. Pre-DRS you would be not out 99% of the time, and if given out, sometimes the umpire might have been criticized. Now it is the opposite.

I dont deny this. But there were decisions that went in spinners favour. Ex, Harbhajan Hattrick had Gilchrist dismissal which wasn't out. There were inside edges that were given out when umpires were under pressure. I think with DRS, both bowlers and batsmen would have corrected many such decisions. And maybe eventually the balance might be shifted a bit in bowlers favour, but it will be very little, almost negligible

As someone who was born in 1999 and only started following cricket in 2011/12, I still have memories of IND being battered in tests in AUS then, with bowlers like an ageing Zaheer, ineffective Ishant, a very young Ashwin, etc. To go from that as one of the first memories of an IND bowling attack to what we have right now, it just feels surreal. I can only imagine what it must feel like for those who saw IND bowling (especially pace bowling) in the 90s & 00s with the kind of bowlers we had then (no disrespect to those players but the current crop is just from a different metaphorical galaxy). Really proud of the giant strides IND pace & spin bowling has made and long may this continue!

One of the biggest differences since 2015 has been Kohli/Shastri and their insistence on results. See how many tests were drawn in 2000-2010 and then 2011-2020 you'll see the number to go down. A key difference has been helpful surfaces. These pitches were a rarity especially since 2000-2010 when Kumble and Bhajji bowled and their averages show. The Kohli/Shastri insistence on results + the class of Ashwin and Jaddu along with decline of overall quality of batting especially from SL and WI have made India look like worst place to bat on earth.

The real reason is that both Ashwin & Jadeja are not just good spin bowlers but they actually think like a proper cricket captain. See, Harbhajan & Kumble were just looking at their own performance and how they could contribute. Ashwin & Jadeja hunt in pairs. They are literally reading the minds of Aussie batsmen and setting them up for failures. In fact, the biggest mistake Virat Kohli did during his captaincy of ODI & T20 was that he tried to replace Ashwin & Jadeja with Chahal and Kuldeep. This never worked. Jadeja came back into the side immediately and Ashwin also came back after 3-4 years. This is what destroyed Virat's record as captain of limited overs side especially in ICC & ACC events. Otherwise Virat would have won more World Cups, Champions Trophies and Asia Cups under his captaincy.

However the Test batting quality has declined at an alarming rate. As much as Smith's heroics almost got them an Ashes win no other Australian batsman has looked like they could single handedly destroy any bowling attack. Same with South Africa, Sri Lanka and even Kiwis. Look at the stats and one would definitely see how the averages of youngsters are so low in comparison to the bygones. Players like Jadeja, Axar Patel, Shakib Al Hasan (Bangladesh), Rangana Herath(Sri Lanka) etc all utilized it greatly by bowling it in such a way that it could hit the seam and spin, or it could hit the leather and spin much less/ go straight on. Guys like Harbhajan Singh didn't seem to do it nearly as much and focused more on looping the ball/ getting extra spin.

Before criticising the indian batters for the last three year though, its important to note the obvious - correlation is not causation. If away sides are not making any runs, you can afford to not make many yourself, as long as its more than the touring teams and as long as you have the 2 best spinners in the world. The focus of the Indian test team wouldn't be their batting at home. Maybe the correlation of recent times and lower scores doesn't actually mean recent times have been harder to score in (for indians only). Maybe its worth looking at Ranji Trophy stats?

Only our top order finds it difficult to play on these surfaces. Middle and lower order has been scoring freely and easily. Unfortunately our top order is filled with players who are beyond any critic and carry on in the team with averages of 25 or less. With the kind of middle and lower order and the bowlers we have, we would have been the greatest team in test cricket ever, but the big stars won't let anyone from out of their core to enter because they know that they will eventually win test matches because bowlers are there to do that.

I think it has more to do with india realising around 2013 that they have absolute horrible bowling attack in big4. So they decided they would invest more in bowling and would focus a bit less on batting that's why no more total belters for batters. Also now that we have produced a above average bowling attack it is about having confidence in batting to be able to play better on a bowling friendly pitches. This also gives bowlers the confidence that they can take wickets and bowl better. If you dissect it look into closely it's a ingenious strategy. PS: they also invested in bouncy and green top pitches for batters so they don't get rattle when touring.

Coz we saw Brits using absolute green tops in uk against us. Then bouncy pitches in Australia. But in india we kept making wickets that were too batting friendly. That's when I think they sat down and made long term plans and now they are paying off.

Lower Order batting by the Indian batting Line up (axar, Ashwin and Jadeja) is so Crucial, Above all the quicks of India are so good nowadays. Stills remember the 90's and early 2000 we had one good fast bowler, the '90s were all Srinath, and in 2000 was all zaheer khan, now it's like all 4 are dangerous bowlers and can get you wickets. we need to start building for the future ash and jaddu might retire at the same time.

Great analysis. The results are showing too. Last 3 BGT series , away wins everywhere, almost no losses at home, and two consecutive WTC finals. India’s biggest sore point is not winning an actual trophy. WTC should be best of 3 ideally. Also team selection in away matches is harder. India picked both Ash and Jadeja for the WTC final on a seamer pitch and paid the price…

Batsmen in the past didn't score lots of runs on shitty dustbowl Indian wickets, because they didn't have to bat on them. @@davesmith3289@sarveshbatham812O nly our top order finds it difficult to play on these surfaces.

Good information. But coming to the test averages for the periods 1980-2010 & 2010 to 2023: the test average in India is hovering between 30 to 35. But the position of India fell from 1st to 8th, so in a way nothing much has changed in India but the change happened in other nations which had increased test averages (batting) may be due to changes in bats to better batting friendly tracks. Could you say what could be the reason behind this?

India is getting better and better at a craft that has no use outside home. The more we get into our comfort zone, the more difficult it'll be to win an ICC event. Every time India loses in a knockout match, we start asking the right questions.... for about 8 seconds. Then BCCI organizes a pan bahar gutkha series in the dusty pitch of Nagpur and everyone suddenly forgets that we cannot win in SENA countries if our finisher is Axar Patel.
@DarkKnight-db1dy

We can't even win in SENA countries? We have already won in Australia twice and nearly defeated ENgland had first game not being wasted so much due to rain. Regarding NZ, just one series happened so it is not enough sample size to pass any judgements. And in S.A. we had a golden chance to win after winning first match but blew it somehow
@debjitpaul8580
@debjitpaul8580 Жыл бұрын
@@DarkKnight-db1dy No, I said we cannot win in SENA countries depending on Axar's batting performance. Will you play Ashwin, Jadeja and Axar in England or Australia? No! The entire year we'll play with 3 spinners and then suddenly in the WTC final we won't have a 3rd seamer and we'll have to go with Shardul Thakur with zero match practice. Why can't we work on our flaws that are obviously gonna be exposed in a big match? My frustration with BCCI's fan service is that we are not addressing our problems across all 3 formats. I know it seems a stretch that I'm connecting these test wins with World cups but we've made a habit of not learning from our mistakes. Why is it that Chahal plays all the t20is leading up to the world cup but then Ashwin gets selected because we needed batting depth? Why can't we think of that earlier? Why are we winning series after series with Axar's performance when we won't be selected even in the playing 11 in the WTC final? All these seem the same to me.... sharpening a sword that won't be used in the main battle.
