The first job I had out of high school, before getting drafted, was working for a landscaper. One of the properties we maintained had a pool that the owner wanted drained. My boss was going to rent a pump and huge hoses. I told him I could save him a bunch of money and he wouldn't have to monitor the whole situation. The house was on a hill. With two garden hoses syphoning, I drained that pool overnight. My boss was amazed and heaped praise on me. I told him, "Don't compliment me, compensate me." That didn't happen.

Growing up on an island in the 50s our fuel and oil came in 55 gal drums towed across Puget Sound and dragged up the beach. Transferring fuel was done with a siphon hose to feed the equipment and the little generator. A few years ago my daughter was going to move to a new house but she needed to get the 275 gallons of salt water out of her aquarium, yep you guessed it I siphoned the water out of the tank and out the front door, she and the grandchildren were all amazed.

Some suggestions: If you drop the output into a (grate) bucket of water, air will not enter from the output. You may as an alternativ add a bend at the output so the flow goes upwards. If you add an output bucket and place that with the rim exactly at the level you want the pond to be, then you have an autosrestarting siphon. Never runs dry, starts by itself in the next rain shower. In dry periods the bucket may dry out tough.

I thought you did an excellent job!!! I wanted to mention a few things that may make it easier for you and improve flow. I am currently studying for an exam that involves water flow in pipes. First, if you made the intake more of a funnel shape (maybe by using a coupler to go up a size) this will reduce the water turbulence at the pipe intake and will increase flow. Second, you could eliminate the one way valve on the intake and instead use a shop vac (possibly two in series) to create a vacuum in the pipe which will suck the water up from the pond and fill the whole siphon (you will need to connect the shop vac where you were using a bucket to fill with water). Keep up the great work!

Im a amputee and military vet and well ... You sir just gave the solution so i salute ya and crack a cold budweiser .... now that the pump solution to my large scale mmj aquaplonics system is figured out ill be set up.... im trying to make my meds 100% free as its a cost that is unbelievably high no pun intended. I think the sump tank on a small stand with a mesh covered bottom drain with a gravityfeed to the fish pond then a 8 inch maybe 10 inch siphon from the pond into filter and split it to the ladies hanging in vertical above for a drink return catch trough for the now nitrate free water takes it back to the sump tank thus it continues....fried fish and fried me ... so to that one sir i salute XD

Pro Tip for the PVC Glue, you should put the purple stuff on first then IMMEDIATELY apply the blue stuff while they are both sopping wet. Its a chemical bond and you are not making as strong a connection when you let the purple stuff dry first. Learnt that bit of genius from a Master Plumber

Thanks for sharing your technique Battlbox. My pond is overgrown with water lilies, iris and other pond plants.which are beginning to "bunch up"; its a large and fairly deep pond, it needs to be drained completely before I can get in there to thin the growth. Just wondering if it's possible to drain the pond completely, i.e. right to the bottom, using your method?
@nsmith4733 жыл бұрын
If you build one of these and cant get it working, the problem is likely that you can't fully fill it. Water runs from the filling tee at the top back into the pond, filling the pipe with air. Put a foot valve or check valve on the pond end to keep water from going back into the pond while filling. The valve will automatically open when flow starts. Also, the whirlpool sucking air into the pipe can get too big and allow the pipe to fill with air. (been there, done that)
@allantaylor6063 жыл бұрын
I've seen someone put a tennis ball into the whirlpool to stop air getting into the pipe.

Is the area the water is going over on your dam not a vegetated emergency spillway? You may want to raise that dam up and add some riprap on the spillway to avoid further erosion. Or you could upsize your outfall pipe so the water elevation doesn't reach your spillway anymore. I would stabilize the outfall channel before I do with some gabion or riprap while I'm at it. that's some decent flow going out that outfall pipe. Great video! Your hilarious to 😂

With the help of such a system it is also possible to remove bottom sediments. But the difference in heights should be more than 3 meters. Or use motor pumps for dirty water
@glyshorts9107 Жыл бұрын
Thinking about trying this with corrugated pipe by putting a wieght on the pond end. Then submerge the pipe in pond to fill it. Seal the outlet end somehow, Then swiftly pulling the outlet end to the low side/drainage area. Quickly pull off the sealing mechanism. I'm thinking this will work, providing there are no air leaks in piping. Thought? Great vid btw!!

Problem 3 is that the pressure of the pond will not hold back a dam thing. If you had 2 valves, one at the surface of the pond and one at the end of the siphon this would work 1st time every time.
@joemc1113 жыл бұрын
Wow it’s been a year, I hope the job went well. I am thinking all those trees on your dam should be removed, when they die,and someday they will, the roots will rot leaving a path for water to go through the dam. I just think you should never have trees growing on a pond dam.

You need to put a check valve on the intake side so the pipe is completely full when you put the top cap on. You can use pvc valves at the fill point and discharge. When the pipe is completely full close the fill valve. Now go open the discharge valve. The discharge must always be lower than the intake
